Student Loans A student loan is money that you, as a student, may borrow and must pay back. Your ability to repay your student loans can impact your ability to obtain a professional license, affects your credit score (this is used to determine if you qualify for an auto loan, mortgage, and even credit cards), and future borrowing. While SKYCTC par cipates in the Federal Direct Student Loan program, we do not encourage unnecessary borrowing. Students should only borrow what is needed to cover educa onal expenses. The Federal Direct Student Loans program offers students two types of student loans: Direct Subsidized Loans and Direct Unsubsidized Loans. 1. Direct Subsidized Loans are federal student loans that are need based and can be used to help cover the cost of educa onal expenses. No interest is charged on subsidized loans while you are in school at least half- me, during your grace period, and during deferment periods. 2. Direct Unsubsidized Loans are federal student loans that are not need based and can be used to help cover educa onal expenses. You, the borrower, have the op on to pay the interest on your Direct Unsubsidized loan while you are in school or you may choose to wait to pay the interest when you are no longer in school. If you choose not to pay the interest while in school, your interest will accrue (accumulate) and be 10 11 capitalized (that is, your interest will be added to the original amount of your loan). Loans are not automa cally included in your ini al financial aid package. You may submit a request le ng us know how much you need to borrow and we will award it to your account. To request a student loan, you will need to complete the loan request in Student Self-Service. Simply click on the link in your Student Self-Service and follow the instruc ons. All students who borrow a student loan are required to complete Entrance Counseling (EC) and sign a Master Promissory Note (MPN). Both of these can be completed at www.studentloans.gov. Please allow up to 10 business days for the loan to show on your account once you have made the request. First-year, first- me borrowers experience a 30-day delay when receiving their first loan disbursement. During this me frame, if you decide you no longer need the loan, contact the Financial Aid office and request a cancella on. We strongly encourage students to keep track of their total loan debt and lender informa on. Students may do this at www.nslds.ed.gov.

Top 10 Tips for Financial Aid! 1. Apply for Financial Aid! Apply for Financial Aid (FA). Submit a Free Applica on for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.gov as soon as possible. 2. Review Your To-Do list on Self Service! Once SKYCTC receives your FAFSA results, any addi onal informa on needed for FA will be indicated on your To- Do list in Student Self-Service. Review your To-Do list o en in case other items are added. Once all To-Do items are completed or approved, your FA amounts will be calculated and ready to view/accept in Student Self- Service. 3. View Financial Aid & Student Loans Financial aid is offered based on full- me enrollment; however, the Actual amount of FA you will receive is based on the number of credits you are taking and may change if your schedule changes. Grants and KEES are automa c. If you want to borrow a student loan you must submit the loan request through Student Self- Service. Loans are only offered to students who request a loan in Student Self-Service, complete ENTRANCE COUNSELING (EC), and a MASTER PROMISSORY NOTE (MPN) at www.studentloans.gov. First-year, first- me borrowers experience a 30-day delay when receiving their first loan disbursement. During this me frame, if you decide you no longer need the loan, contact the FA office and request a cancella on. 4. Actual Financial Aid! Six credits are required for most FA programs. Once you register for classes, you will find an amount for Actual FA on Student Self-Service. Your Actual FA amount reflects the amount of aid you should actually receive based on your enrollment. 5. Bookstore Charges! Students whose Actual FA is more than the tui on amount due may be able to charge books in the campus or online bookstore. A one- me FA/Bookstore Release (FAR) is necessary before charges are allowed. Complete the FAR in Student Self-Service. Second bi-term charges are not available! Only loans that have an EC and the MPN completed are eligible for bookstore charges. 6. My Account S ll Has A Balance Due! If the an cipated aid on your KCTCS Student Tui on Bill is enough to cover your tui on balance, no payment is necessary! The tui on amount due will remain on your account and you will con nue to receive email statements un l a few weeks a er classes start. If you do not have enough an cipated aid on your tui on bill, you must make payment arrangements with the Business Office immediately. 7. What If I Drop A Class? Dropping a class always affects FA. During drop/add, your aid is adjusted to the actual number of credits you are taking. Dropping a class you never a end requires repayment of all FA paid for that class. Dropping a class that has already started and receiving a W usually does not require repayment as long as you remain enrolled and complete your other classes; however a W is not considered a successful a empt. If you drop all your classes before the end of the term, you may be required to repay a por on of the aid you received based on the last day you a ended class. More informa on about Withdrawal is available on the website. 8. What If I Don t Pass All My Classes? Students who receive FA must meet certain standards of progress in order to remain eligible for aid in the future. In order to meet Sa sfactory Academic Progress, students must maintain a cumula ve 2.0 GPA, and successfully complete 67% of a empted credits (remain on pace to graduate). TIP #83 Borrow only what you need! 9. When Will I Get My Refund? Refunds are processed by the Business Office according to SKYCTC/KCTCS established melines. Refunds normally begin about four weeks a er the term starts. 10. How Will I Get My Refund? All new students receive a Bank Mobile Vibe Debit Card in the mail around the me classes begin. Ac va on instruc ons will come with the card. NO FUNDS ARE ON 1) Complete your FAFSA at h ps://fafsa.gov 2) Follow Up by checking your To-Do list on Student Self-Service. Be sure to click the links on your To-Do list for addi onal informa on and to print a copy of required financial aid forms. Remember to check your KCTCS email for updates as well. 3) If interested in student loans, accept your loans on Student Self-Service. Only borrow what you need. Complete Entrance Counseling and the Master Promissory Note at www.studentloans.gov 4) Complete the Financial Aid Release (FAR) form on Student Self-Service. In order to manage your workload, add the dates to your Student Success Guide! USE IT LIKE A RULE BOOK Expectations for workplace ethics, academic honesty and integrity, divisional, and classroom or Instructor policies are contained within the syllabus. Ask questions if you don t understand. Break big goals down into small tasks (aim for a bunch of 20-minute tasks). Draw a en on to important dates and deadlines. Highlight it if it s something you re dreading! Every morning, write 3 goals for the day on a Post-It and s ck it where you ll see it. Fill it with things that mo vate you. Drawings, lyrics, quotes, thoughts: Make it happy to see! It s OK to trick yourself into thinking things are due earlier than they actually are. Keep different to-do lists in your planner for different things to make your life feel more balanced. Keep your planner open as o en as possible so that its contents are visible reminders! Keep your planner with you at all mes. We always need to add things to our lists or check dates! Priori ze assignments and projects by deadline or the amount of points they re worth. Set a planning me one night a week in order to plan for the upcoming week. Transfer old tasks to new days as "high priority so they don t keep ge ng put on the back burner! Use a color-coding system for the different responsibili es in your life. Use arrows to cross through undone tasks to move them from day to day un l they are complete. Use down me to update your planner or write down things you want to accomplish/remember! Use large Post-It s or paperclips to keep lists of things in your planner. Toss them when you finish. Use Post-It Tabs to find important dates more quickly or to split your planner into categories. Use your planner daily by making it a part of your morning rou ne.
