What s on offer? Our Open Days provide you with the chance to get a genuine insight into life at the University of Portsmouth. You can tailor the day to suit your needs, picking what you want to see and when. On the Open Day you will be able to: visit the departments to meet academic staff and attend a talk take a coach or walking tour of the city and campus visit some of our halls of residence learn more about the University of Portsmouth from our Vice-Chancellor chat to some of our current students tour our first-class facilities speak to support staff at our Information Fair These are all available at various times throughout the day. Please refer to the relevant section of this brochure for specific details. Don t forget to use the handy planner on the back of this brochure to help you make the most of the day. Registration Points There will be a number of Registration Points throughout the campus with staff to assist you with any enquiries. Seeing the city, campus and halls of residence While you re here we want you to have the opportunity to see as much as possible of both the University and the city, so why not take advantage of our wide choice of guided tours? City coach tours Location: Outside the University Library, Cambridge Road (point 26 on the map) Time: 10.15am 3.45pm (departing at quarter past and quarter to the hour) Duration: 50 minutes Details: During the tour our Student Assistants will point out places of interest including favourite student haunts, areas of private student housing, as well as an insight into the past, present and future of the city of Portsmouth. Campus walking tours Location: Departure stand, Guildhall Square (point E on the map) Time: 3.45pm (departing every 15 minutes, 25 places per tour) Duration: 45 minutes Details: This is a great way to familiarise yourself with the campus. One of our Student Assistants will take you on a guided tour of the University Quarter pointing out the main University buildings and facilities. Halls of residence tours Location: Depart from entrance to halls of residence listed below in the University Quarter Time: 4pm (regular departures) Duration: 20 minutes Details: Our Student Assistants will be happy to provide an insight into living away from home. Please be aware that some of the halls can get very busy and there may be a short wait. We recommend you visit a maximum of 2 3 halls to get a good feel for the accommodation available. Making the most of your day Planning your visit Before you visit, use the planner at the back of this brochure to plan your day. There s a lot on offer and you won t be able to do it all, so try and prioritise the talks and tours that are important to you. Local attractions Why not take advantage of your visit to Portsmouth and spend some time getting a feel for the city? The main University buildings are conveniently located for looking around the city centre pedestrian shopping area, getting a bite to eat at one of Gunwharf Quay s waterfront restaurants or going for a stroll along the beach and Southsea Common. Top tips Make the most of your day by planning your visit using the day planner at the back of the brochure. The earlier talks tend to be the busiest. Don t worry if a talk is full; have a look at what else you can do in the meantime and go to one of the later subject talks. Don t forget the Information Fair a great opportunity to find out more about our support services and facilities. Any questions? How to find us Getting to the University of Portsmouth By train Portsmouth s city centre train station, Portsmouth and Southsea, is just a five-minute walk from the University campus. There will be Student Assistants along the route. Follow our yellow AA walking signs. By coach National Express coaches to Portsmouth arrive at Cambridge Road, at the heart of the University campus. Walking from Portsmouth Harbour train station or Gunwharf Quays Use our map to head straight down Park Road and at the first set of traffic lights, turn right onto Burnaby Road. At the end of Burnaby Road (the University Library is directly in front of you), turn left and continue down the road for 100 metres until you see signs for University buildings such as the Union Building and the Spinnaker Sports Centre. This is the centre of the University campus and where you can start your day. There will be Student Assistants along the route. Follow our yellow AA walking signs. By road Exit the M27 at junction 12 and follow signs for the M275 Portsmouth. To go direct to the University campus: Stay in the middle lane of the M275 and follow directions for Gunwharf Quays until you see the Catholic Cathedral on your left; continue past the traffic lights down Anglesea Road in the left-hand lane. After the next set of traffic lights (the turning for Gunwharf Quays) move into the right-hand lane. Follow the one-way system staying in the right-hand lane. After the pedestrian crossing, follow the one-way system taking a sharp right. As you approach the traffic lights, bear left into Cambridge Road where you will be at the centre of the University campus. For parking at Gunwharf Quays: Stay in the middle lane of the M275, following the brown signs for the Historic Waterfront and then for Gunwharf Quays. For parking at the Historic Dockyard: Stay in the middle lane of the M275 and follow the brown signs for the Historic Waterfront. You will then see signs for the Historic Dockyard car park. Not sure where you re heading? Look out for our Student Assistants in purple. Disabled parking Badge holders may park free of charge without a time limit in most Portsmouth City Council-run car parks and on-street pay and display areas, providing that the Blue Badge is clearly displayed in the vehicle. Signs are present in all the council-run car parks and on pay and display meters, which will advise if parking is free for badge holders. There are also a number of disabled spaces in University car parks that are available on a first-come, first-served basis to badge holders on Open Days.
