DoDEA - Pacific (comprised of DoDDS Pacific/DDESS Guam) Inspiring &preparing our students for success in a global environment. Department of Defense Education Activity: DoDEA

Area Overview DoDEA-Pacific operates four districts (Guam, Japan, Korea, and Okinawa), 47 schools, and 24,000 students affiliated with 18 military installations within the Pacific. Like many schools in the United States, DoDEA-Pacific schools are accredited by the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI). DoDEA-Pacific Schools are geographically dispersed over 1.2 million square miles throughout the Pacific Theater. In addition to a rigorous core curriculum, DoDEA-Pacific Schools offer a wide array of electives including distance learning and professional technical career courses. Scholastic and athletic programs at each school are similar to those found in stateside school districts. DoDEA-Pacific also sponsors 22 Far East Activities to encourage student participation in festivals, symposiums, and competitions to showcase their creative, academic, and athletic talents. As a result of the geographic spread, students experience a unique blend of the local Far East culture, customs, and traditions. Schools host many cultural events and activities annually with their local communities, including programs focusing on the visual and performing arts, music, and educational exchanges involving students, curriculum, and instruction. These examples of collaboration and cooperation between faculty members, families, service members, and the community result in a myriad of cultural activities that provide students with experiences they will remember for a lifetime. 2009 Annual Report

In addition to having more than 19 years experience as an educator, school principal, and special education director in several school districts throughout Wyoming, Ms. Ohman served as the state s Superintendent of Public Instruction, supervising 49 school districts with 100,000 students and 7,000 teachers. Area Highlights Ryukyu Middle School, located in the Okinawa District, opened its doors to over 600 students on Kadena Air Base in October 2008. Ryukyu MS is the largest middle school in the Pacific. The $47 million, 20-acre campus includes modern classrooms, a 400-meter track, 25-meter pool, and football and soccer fields. DoDEA Pacific officials are closely involved in tour normalization planning for U.S. service members and their families stationed in South Korea. Plans call for transitioning current 12-month unaccompanied tours by U.S. service members to 24-month accompanied tours in support of changing mission requirements. At Osan Air Base in South Korea, Osan Middle School, scheduled to open on time in August 2009, was built to accommodate 350 students. The $17.5 million project features state-of-the-art labs, comprehensive athletic facilities, a dedicated television production room, and a parking structure for 380 vehicles. A $2.5 million, 2-story addition of 8 classrooms and teacher space to Osan High School was also completed in 2009, and a $1.5 million, 7,450 square foot music facility was built to serve both Osan MS and HS. At the Yongsan complex in Seoul, 6 classrooms were added over the summer to accommodate up to 150 more elementary school students. At Camp Humphreys, located about an hour south of Seoul near Pyeongtaek, 3 classrooms were added and the middle school was relocated to a larger building. Camp Humphrey s is also home to the new DoDEA Virtual School Pacific Hub scheduled to begin hosting distance learning courses in the fall of 2009.
