DECREES The Industrial Design for Architecture level I Specializing Master is instituted and activated for the years 2017/2018. ART. 1 Characteristics of the Master The Industrial Design for Architecture level I Specializing Master is instituted and activated at the Department of Design. The administrative seat of the Specializing Master is at the Polidesign University Consortium. The School of reference is the School of Design. The Specialising Master Director and contact person for the School is professor Matteo Oreste Ingaramo. The Deputy Director is professor Francesco Trabucco. The Board of this Specializing Master Course is composed of the following professors of the Politecnico di Milano: Francesco Trabucco, Matteo Oreste Ingaramo, Riccardo Gatti, Giuliano Simonelli, Silvia Deborah Ferraris, Lucia Rosa Elena Rampino, Michele De Lucchi, Francesco Zurlo, e prof. Aldo Cingolani of Bertone Design. ART. 2 Training target and job opportunities The ID4A Master educational aim is to train professionals skillful at developing high quality projects in the field that ranges over the architectural layout and the efficiency of the building components. The Master has also the objective of completing the training of designers, extending their expertise and problem solving skills with the culture and tools typical of Industrial Design. This aim is sought through an educational course that integrates theoretical knowledge with design studios, vocational activities such as visits to companies and practices and meeting with professionals, and the mandatory internship in architecture and design practices or companies of the building sector. The professional outlet after the master foresees job placement in companies of different sectors including serial manufacturing of building components, of light and heavy prefabrication, of products for the construction of the building envelope, of implant systems and of functional scope products for the built environment. Other outlets are: the entrance in studies of design and engineering and freelance profession with
interaction with companies. In particular, the professional role will be to: expert designer, with theoretical knowledge combined with significant experience applied to the construction industry; product manager, with strong multidisciplinary propensity, responsible for the development of new products and their integration to the built environment. The course will be held in English. ART. 3 Didactic contents and activities organization This Masters will start in March 2017 and will end in March 2018. The professionals trained in this course will develop the ability to manage the complexity of the industrial product design for the built environment with respect to its integration with the building product. The Master schedule consists of lectures, seminars, exercises and workshops. UD 1 - History of Design and Architecture: general overview on the historical evolution of industrial design, within which it is highlighted the relationship among man-object-space. The interpretation is, in fact, the investigation of the relationship between the design of built space and the design of the products contained, integrated or anyway related therein. To this regard will be the theme of language and craft production, proto industrial and industrial 32 hours, 3 ECTS Fulvio Irace UD 2 - Aesthetics, Semiotics for Design: analysis of the major languages and figurative archetypes that are historically defined and are repository of a heritage of recognizable signs. Training of the skill to recognize these languages and to analyze them so to identify their distinctive features 28 hours, 2.5 ECTS Marco Maiocchi, Silvia Ferraris UD 3 - Design and the Contemporaneity: acquisition of the framework of knowledge that is necessary to confront with the language of Contemporaneity even during the designing stage Design is the discipline of Contemporaneity: the critical understanding of the variables relating to the design of new industrial products even those included in the universe of products for the architecture -, implies a commitment to evolve the cultural and interpretive skills, which make intelligible that specific meaning of the discipline. 40 hours, 3.5 ECTS Francesco Trabucco UD 4 - Design and Innovation: acquisition of knowledge concerning the concept of innovation in the field of design through lectures, exercises and guided tours. The theme of innovation is explored and expanded from two different perspectives: the design and management, with specialized educational contributions 36 hours, 3 ECTS Lucia Rampino UD 5 - Design Strategy: acquisition of the skill to implement the process of design integration with the organization and strategy of firms: the process of new products development and the role of design in that process; the innovation process of the contribution of design to the development of an innovative product 24 hours, 2 ECTS Francesco Zurlo UD 6 - Materials Technology: the main families of materials that are applied in industrial production will be analyzed as for: their properties, the potential gained during the transformation processes, the levels of compatibility with other materials, the possibilities of connection and assembly, the strength and durability of building elements. It will provided the information necessary to understand the relationships between the industrial products with the materials that constitute them. Also the tools for the selection of materials, such as the Cambridge Engineering Selector Design version Consideration, will be shown and provided Ore 32, 3 ECTS Alberto Cigada, Barbara Del Curto UD 7 - Manufacturing Processes for Design for Architecture: gaining the ability to understand and manage the technical, technological and economic considerations related to production processes and logistics flows of industrial products 40 hours, 3 ECTS Matteo Ingaramo, Claudio Germak UD 8 - Technology of the built environment: acquisition of knowledge on the repertoire of technical elements necessary to identify and design products compatible and integrated to buildings. Acquisition of the ability to design of building components for interiors (interior partitions, metal, plants, decorative elements) and exterior(external vertical closures and their finishes: curtain walls, skylights, natural and artificial stone materials) starting from their function in the building up to the constraint of implementation and cost 24 hours, 2 ECTS Anna Mangiarotti, Ingrid Paoletti
UD 9 - Seminars: meeting with teachers and professionals coming from the business world. The seminars will be focused on the relationship between Design and Architecture and the evolving role of design in the innovation of buildings 32 hours, 3 ECTS Aldo Cingolani, Silvia Ferraris UD 10 - Design Studio: design activities like workshops will be divided into three design studios. The theme of the design studios will be defined with companies that produce industrial products for the built environment. Also the studios will tackle themes of increasing complexity so to gradually develop increasing design skills 192 hours, 16 ECTS Francesco Trabucco, Matteo Ingaramo, Silvia Ferraris UD 11 -Internship: a training period will be attended at design or architecture professional practices or companies of the building sector Ore 480, 19 ECTS ART. 4 Admission requirements This Specializing Master is reserved for candidates with a University Diploma or a University Degree (old Italian system degree, or a Bachelor or Master of Science (new Italian system degree) in polytechnic disciplines. As for candidates who graduated abroad, equivalent study titles in the respective educational institutions will be considered. The number of admitted students is 25. The Admissions Board will select the students to be accepted. ART. 5 Formalities The Master application must be submitted starting from the day following the date of this Decree and within the 15 th of February, 2017. * Italian/foreign citizens with Degree obtained in Italy Self-certifications relating to Personal identity (name and surname, date and place of birth, nationality and residence). A copy of the student's identity document Copy of the Diploma Supplement or copy of the Diploma and Academic qualifications, indicating the marks obtained in each examination, for the students with an a University Degree obtained under the old educational system. DEGREE OBTAINED ABROAD Students admitted to the Master course must submit to the Managing office of the Specializing Master an application for enrolment using the specific form provided, complete with revenue stamp. The application form may be found on the following website www.polimi.it/postlaurea > Documentazione The academic degrees obtained must be documented by presenting: - Declaration of Value issued by the local Italian diplomatic authorities (Italian Embassy or Italian Consulate) on letterhead paper complete with original stamp; or an Official document issued by ENIC/NARIC centers - true copy of the original academic certificate Non-EU citizens, in addition to the above documentation must submit a copy of the residence permit. Students born in a non-eu nation who declare EU citizenship must attach to copy of an identity document demonstrating EU citizenship. Students who fail to present to copy of an identity document demonstrating EU citizenship will be required to present to copy of their residence permit. In order to be admitted to the Master's final examination, students must submit - within 30 days of the exam date - an appropriate application to the Politecnico di Milano. After completing the course and on passing the final exam, students in possession of foreign qualification should personally collect the original degree certificate filed at the Servizio Offerta Formativa Post Laurea, after forwarding a request to the office at least one week before the scheduled date of collection. The true copy of the academic certificate will not be returned. Any uncollected original degree certificates will be forwarded by post, under the responsibility of the student. ART. 6 Title and acknowledgements ISSUED CERTIFICATION At the end of the course, after passing the final exam, the "Industrial Design for Architecture" level I Specializing Master diploma will be issued. STUDENTS' OBLIGATIONS Attendance to the activities foreseen by this Master is mandatory for at least 75% of the course. Withdraw from the course must be put in writing. The training period cannot be suspended for any reason. It is not possible to be matriculated in a Specializing Master and in another study course of an Italian University at the same time. EVALUATION METHOD Evaluation tests and a final exam are foreseen. The final exam will consist in the presentation and discussion of a written work developed during the Master course.
The total cost of the course is 10.000,00. The cost of the course is divided into: ART. 7 Taxes and contributions - enrolment tax to the Politecnico di Milano 500,00 per student; - Master enrolment fee, equal to 9.500,00 per student. The enrolment tax to the Politecnico di Milano won't be refunded under any circumstances. ART. 8 Financial aid Some partial study bursaries are available to be awarded on the basis of curricula and motivation. The Assessment Commission reserves the right to withhold such bursaries should they rule that the level of candidacy does not reach an adequate quality standard.
