Emphasis is placed on business s social, legal, political and ethical responsibilities to both external and internal groups in business. Topics include corporate social responsibility, legal, political and ethical aspects of business, state and federal laws, contracts, intellectual property, employment law, product liability, safety issues, and environmental regulation. This course is an upper division course for students who have met the admission requirements for upper division courses. How to proceed through the course: To accomplish the course objectives, the course material may be presented, and assessment done through any of the following: (1) videos and lectures, (2) in-class or online discussions/team assignments/quizzes, (3) case analysis, (4) exams (5) self-assessments and presentations. It is the responsibility of the student to do the required readings and assignments prior to the class meeting or online meeting, if applicable. Students are expected to demonstrate a positive and willing attitude during team/group assignments; failure to do so may lead to a reduction in your participation grade, if applicable. Assignments must be prepared in a professional manner and must include the student s name and student number, the course and which section, the instructor s name, and the date submitted. The due dates for these assignments will be clearly publicized by the instructor and you must refer to the weekly assignment schedule for due dates. If you have any questions about the assignment or due date, it is your responsibility to get them answered at the earliest possible time. The grade that you receive will reflect not only the content, but also the presentation and organization of the assignment as well. When taking a typical 3 credit hour course, students should plan to spend at least 9 hours per week doing coursework and studying for that course regardless of the mode of delivery (online, hybrid, faceto-face). Some weeks might require more study and preparation time, and some weeks might require less time. In addition, this is only a general guideline as time spent will also depend upon learning level at entrance of the course, ease of comprehension of the material, student time management, among other factors. These are representative of the types of assignments used in the course for assessment.* Online Chapter Textbook Quizzes: Chapter quizzes are based on the textbook material. The quizzes can be found in McGraw Hill Connect. Please see Weekly Assignment Schedule for due dates. Final Essay Exam Or Applied Legal Business Manual: This assignment requires students to apply concepts from the course and create an employee training manual based on the concepts in the class. It is a practical application exercise and reinforces major learning outcomes in a new, real-world context. This is a comprehensive review assignment of the material in the course. It will be in the format of either a legal research paper or some form of essay exam. This will be a long essay-type assignment with parameters outlined in detail in a detailed assignment sheet found on the Content Page of the online classroom and released approximately halfway through the course. Homework Bundles: There are two Homework Bundles, which are sets of questions asking you to apply the material from the different chapters (the ones covered in my Power Points!). The homework questions relate to the legal cases in your book and/or the chapter material, lecture video, or power point material. Videos/Video Lectures: If available, can be found in the Video Corner on the Course Home/News page and usually also will be given links in a word doc in the Content page in the online classroom Communication: The best way to reach me is by email. You can use the Course Mail function in the Florida Online classroom or Theresa.moore@daytonastate.edu. I will check in periodically throughout the day on weekdays and occasionally on weekends. Note: I primarily work during normal business hours. If you post questions, emails, or comments at another time, please remain patient in expecting a response. All students must be able (and are expected) to access the online classroom, their FalconMail email, discussion posts and checking all new Course News/Home page posts at least 2-3x per week. All emails/videos/news posts from the instructor are required materials in the course and it is assumed that all students have read the information in a timely manner. Student may expect responses to email and phone voice mail within 3 business days. Students may expect assignment grades within one week after submission for typical homework assignments and usually between 7-10 days for major projects, papers, group projects, or finals. Discussion boards are used for the attendance posting and to communicate with your groups during the group project. Interaction: Students may interact with the instructor through email, phone, or online/video office hours and through submission of course assignments. Students will primarily interact with other students in the group project and will be given a restricted group discussion forum to facilitate the

communication within the group. Students can also select the best method to communicate with their peers to accomplish course and task objectives. Attendance Policy: In an online course your attendance is gauged by your active involvement in the course. You are required to login and complete your first assignment attendance verification assignment within 48 hours of the course start date for attendance verification purposes. Lack of timely participation may result in being dropped from the course. Students who stop attending this class will be withdrawn from the class and receive a final grade of W1 (Withdrawn). Attendance includes participating in online or face-to-face environments as required. Late Work/Make-up Work and Exams: Late work will have approximately 1 letter grade reduced from the score earned on the assignment. Late work will not be accepted more than 1 week past the original due date without documentation of extenuating circumstances. Quizzes and discussion boards will not be reopened (if applicable). Classroom Etiquette: For 50/50 courses: All students should be on time for class. Attend to your needs before entering the room. Students who come late or leave during the class are a distraction to both the instructor and other students. The use of cellular phones, MP3 players and other electronic devices is also a distraction. Please ensure electronic devices are off (or on silent alert). If an emergency arises, please be courteous to your fellow students and leave quietly. Finally, cell phones, watch alarms, beepers, etc. are strictly prohibited in the examination room. Evaluation/Assessment Methods: Instructor will use any combination of the following types of evaluation and assessment methods: essay, homework questions, written research papers, quizzes, discussion boards, group projects, presentations, and others as announced. The instructor reserves the right to alter the grade structure and modify assignments including additional assignments and unannounced quizzes. Evaluation will take into account student s attendance, tardiness, and class participation. See description in handling of assignments in section above. Grading Policy: The instructor uses a weighted grading system for the course. In order for a student to receive an "I" grade, the student must have completed a minimum of 70% of the graded course work with a passing grade and have been turning work in regularly and on time. The incomplete work must be made up before the middle of the next major semester. I grades automatically convert to F grades if the make-up requirements are not met and the appropriate grade change is not submitted by the deadline as published in the College Catalog. *Incompletes are not granted to students who think they may fail or not pass a course who have not completed the requirements listed above. Class Schedule: The class schedule and assignment due dates are included in the Weekly Assignment Schedule (see end of document). Class Withdrawal Process: Example: Students can withdraw from this class prior to the date listed in the Academic Calendar. It is not necessary to have approval from the instructor to withdraw from the course, but you should discuss the situation with the instructor prior to any action. Many times issues and concerns can be resolved with communication. Please review Refund/Repayment Policy in the current college catalog and also check with the Office of Financial Aid to determine how this withdrawal might affect your current and future aid eligibility.

It is expected that you will listen/view these videos and anything mentioned/said or covered in the videos will be considered as conveyed to the student. General Writing Rubric: *These writing considerations are applicable to all graded writing for the course and should be considered in addition to any other instructions given for an assignment, even if these items are not repeated in the directions of the assignment* Overall writing evaluation The assignments should follow the DSC Writing Rubric in the category of exemplary (the detailed DSC writing rubric for exemplary writing is posted in the syllabus). Please refer to it for explanation of each category. Overall, the submitted homework is exemplary in the areas of: Critical thinking Rhetorical Sophistication Organization Use of Language Information Literacy Best answers will write out the definition of any and all applicable concepts being discussed and apply facts and evidence from the question, situation, case study, etc. to the definition. Best answers cite to the place the information was taken (PDF, website, or power point, etc). Best answers reflect high comprehension of reading, answer reflects critical analysis, critical thinking, ability to apply information, anticipate a further or deeper level of synthesis than merely repeating material back to instructor. Thoroughness, depth of discussion, analysis, evaluation of concepts and situation will be used to determine level of comprehension and commitment to task. Best answers do this AND bold, underline, or italicize where leadership terms and/or concepts are being. Best answers MUST use material from the assigned homework readings and materials to support the position, argument, or reason for the answer. Do not use outside sources unless told to do so or that it is permitted by the assignment. However, if for some reason you do any outside sources will have to be cited.
