Warm Vinyasa Cool Mind Workshop Series Flow Teacher Training

T h e Yo g a S t u d i o H a t h a / V i n y a s a F l o w Te a c h e r Tr a i n i n g About Maggie Kortchmar Maggie Kortchmar is the co/owner director of The Yoga Studio, heading up the newly added HathaVinyasa Flow Teacher Training. An E-RYT 1000 yoga teacher Maggie is Certified in the OM yoga method by Cyndi Lee. She has worked closely with Cyndi to bring this solid, authentic style of yoga and Calm Abiding meditation known as Shamatha to Kansas City. Maggie is dedicated to helping the student find his/her voice and seat of the teacher. With precise stepping stones she guides her students through every aspect of yoga philosophy, asana and meditation. These practices, informed by her Buddhist studies, gather together for a more embodied teacher training and practice. With this in-depth training you will become a teacher capable to teach any level of hatha or vinyasa flow class with confidence, clarity and compassion. Maggie has taught at OM Yoga in New York City, several studios throughout the east coast, and her own studios in northern Connecticut. Warm Vinyasa Cool Mind Through dynamic and thoughtful asana, pranayama and meditation practice, you will learn the three tenets of a meaningful flow yoga class: Arising, Abiding and Dissolving. You will discover how to teach this in every posture, transition and breath. In this way you instill a quiet mind within yourself and your students. Flow is not only mindful, rhythmic movement of the body, it is also an exploration of how we can abide in a wakeful and calm state as challenges arise.. We will explore the power of language and philosophy that will empower you to confidently choose and integrate certain aspects of a theme or peak posture into your class and how to teach an All Levels class with compassion, confidence and clarity. You will learn the basic templates of a flow yoga class. This template will be your guide that enables you to become creative and yet stay within a sequence that makes sense. We will also begin meditation practice and how it can make you a more sensitive teacher to pass that cool mind to the class in front of you. Course Curriculum: Along with regular attendance of Maggie s classes, her following workshops, required visiting teachers workshops and a 20 hr. anatomy course (teacher to be announced) you will complete a 200 hour Flow certification. If you already hold a 200 hour certification, this training will give you your 500 hr. (with additional requirements stated below). There will also be additional workshops taught by some of the best teachers in the country. These will give you additional hours and a wealth of knowledge. 2

Arising, Abiding, Dissolving: The Roots of Vinyasa Yoga Through dynamic and careful asana practice you will learn the three tenets of vinyasa yoga: Arising, Abiding and dissolving. You will begin to discover how to teach this in every posture, transition and breath. We will discover how to teach the transitions as postures within themselves, opening up to each and every moment of asana until the final rest of savasana. You will learn the basic template of a vinyasa class which you can rely on to build creative and effective sequences. 2. The Elements of Balance and Transitions Here we begin the practice of standing on one leg in eka padha (one legged) postures as well as basic arm balances and inversions. There are key elements in the balancing postures that if taught correctly, will make standing on one leg, or two hands, stable and joyful. Key to this is the study of basic anatomy and transitions between the postures. 3. Intelligent sequencing for Hatha and Vinyasa Flow Here we will learn how to put together a class that makes sense from the view of anatomy, class level and time of day. Taking into consideration that you want to engage your students and keep their attention on what they are doing and feeling. Learning how to sequence a class well is the cornerstone to being a successful vinyasa teacher. 3

T h e Yo g a S t u d i o H a t h a / V i n y a s a F l o w Te a c h e r Tr a i n i n g 4. Hands on and off Adjustments/The seat of the teacher In this session you will learn how to observe, approach and take the right action to give an effective and safe hands on adjustment. All students can benefit from props and very basic precise instruction, no matter how far along in the practice they are. With this in mind you will learn how to take what one student may be struggling with and teach it to the entire class without singling anyone out. Language and voice is key. We will focus on all aspects of hands on and off communication. From entering the room to taking your seat. The way the teacher places her body, voice, mind and intention is key to offering compassion, clarity and confidence within herself and her students. We will explore how to access your own natural seat of the teacher through clear communication and observation. 5. The Eight Limbs and the 4 Noble Truths In this session we will study yoga philosophy and how this relates to teaching asana and weaving it into your classes and your own life. We also will study the four noble truths. These truths are at the heart of Buddhist philosophy and align beautifully with the way of the yogi. 6. Inversions and Arm Balances Today is all about balancing while upside down and on two hands. You will learn when/if to bring the teachings of inversions and arm balances into your class and what steps must be taken before the final posture is attempted. Observation of your student is crucial in teaching these postures and in this session we concentrate on how to teach one student at a time to keep him safe as well as to have others observe and learn. 7. The Art of Teaching an All Levels Class Teaching any yoga class is teaching to different bodies, minds and levels. Yet there are wonderful tools that can be employed to keep an all levels class safe for beginners, dynamic for more advanced, and a joy for all involved. We will explore the different scenarios of an all levels class and how to teach effectively and with confidence. 8. Meditation and Pranayama Essentials Today we dive deeper into a meditation practice. You will learn the meditation of calm abiding : Shamatha. With a focus on the second limb of yoga: The Niyamas (virtuous observance). We awaken one of these Niyamas: Svadhyaya (self-study). A consistent meditation practice not only enhances your own daily life but it shows up in your teaching and is at the heart of what yoga is about: freedom. You will learn not only to meditate but where and how to teach elements of meditation into your classes. We will also study and practice basic breathing exercises known as Pranayama and how it affects the body and mind. 9. From Asana to Meditation and back. Today we summarize all the elements of your training and discover the balance of effort and effortlessness: Flow. Each trainee will teach a segment of a One hour and 15-minute class with feedback from your teacher as you prepare for your final class for your certification. 4
