Inside the Folder!
What s So Great About Flipping? Students view videos at home about the next day s lesson Students come to class the next day knowing what is going on Valuable class time is used for student questions, cooperative learning, project-based learning, class discussions
What s so Great About Flipping? Instead of students sitting at home trying to do their homework, they do their work under the guidance of the teacher Teachers are excited about the possibilities Students like watching the videos at home, as they are generally shorter than a lesson given in class Students don t like traditional lecture
What s So Great About Flipping? All of that cool technology your district purchased will actually get USED! SmartBoards ipads Laptops Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle have been dead for 2,400 years Let s try something different! It is 13 years into the 21 st Century let s teach using 21 st Century Skills!
How Flipping Can Fail Flipping frees up a lot of class time! Flipping fails when the teacher doesn t use class time wisely Flipping can fail if the teacher uses class time as a study hall Flipping can fail if the Principal forces teachers to try flipping Flipping can fail if teachers try to make more than one video per week
What the Naysayers Are Saying What if kids don t watch the videos? Many students don t have access to the Internet Flipping just takes an inefficient lesson delivery system (lecture) and transfers it to the home Flipping shifts the responsibility for learning from the teacher to the student (Yes?)
What If Kids Don t Watch the Videos? How do you react when kids don t do their homework in the traditional classroom? One teacher suggests that kids who don t watch the videos complete worksheets or read the chapter while the rest of the class participates in a learning activity Some teachers are lucky and have one or more student computers where students can view the video to catch up
Many Students Don t Have Access Studies have shown that we have overestimated the number of students who have no Internet access There are many students who do not have Internet access to do SCHOOLWORK! Let s come up with solutions for students who truly do not have access
How Teachers Are Adapting Keep the school s computer lab open before school or after school Record videos on DVD for students to take home (atube Catcher does this) Save videos on a flash drive to send home with students w/computer but no Internet Students visit the public library or school library
How Teachers Are Adapting Play your video during the first few minutes of class while taking roll and other housekeeping chores If you are recording yourself presenting a PowerPoint, give students a printout of the PPT Have students visit your room before school, during lunch, or after school if you have student computers in your room
So Are You Ready to Learn How to Flip? Get out your Flipped Teaching Matrix I will walk you through it!
Now You Know! Now that you know how to Flip what are you going to do with this information? Who are you going to tell? How are you going to tell them? Are you going to motivate your staff to try? How are you going to motivate them? Are you going to force your staff to try?
Flip Your Faculty Meetings! Show your faculty that ANYONE can flip! This will free up time for your staff to discuss important issues as a department (or interdisciplinary teams) Show your staff that you VALUE their time! See the handout where I included an article teaching you how to flip your meetings
How Can I Train My Staff? Option #1 You go to a conference, then train your staff by yourself Advantage: YOU are in control! Disadvantage: Do you really want to do that? On top of all of your other responsibilities?
How Can I Train My Staff? Option #2: Send teachers to a conference Teachers travel to conference Teachers attend sessions related to Flipped Teaching Teachers return from conference energized! Teachers help get other staff members excited about Flipping their classroom
Why Does This Method Fail? You spend money for hotel, gas, plane ticket, meals, and the registration fees for the conference itself Teachers miss instructional time, and you pay for substitutes Teachers come back energized, but that quickly fades There is no follow up No accountability piece
How Can I Train My Staff? Option #3: Bring in an expert Do a full-day or half-day in-service Expert fires up staff! Staff is energized, and is ready to implement!
Why Does This Method Fail? You paid a LOT of money for the expert! You used one of your precious staff development days for this training The expert showed up for a day, now she s gone! No follow up Your staff has questions good luck! No accountability piece
What happens to YOUR staff over time? The staff sees one failed initiative after another They develop an attitude of This Too Shall Pass and just go through the motions Jumping on and off of bandwagons undermines your credibility as an administrator
How Can You Stop This Cycle? Make it possible for teachers to CHOOSE what PD they take PD is delivered online so you don t have to pay for travel expenses or substitutes Teachers learn at their own pace, in the comfort of their own home on their own time!
How Can You Stop This Cycle? Teachers aren t forced to sit through PD that has no relevance to them (where they can discourage others) Accountability is built in through quizzes and tests (teacher takes quiz, quiz is graded by the PD platform, and the grade is sent to the Principal s email inbox) Course is owned by the school district forever, and can be used as a reference
I Will GIVE You a Course! The course is called Digital Teacher I show teachers how to teach using digital resources Teachers can take the course and receive 15 hours of Continuing Education credit Course contains lessons, quizzes, assignments, videos, PowerPoints, Word documents, PDF s
What Do YOU Have to Do? I need your personal email address School district spam filters are brutal! You will not be put on an email list Email marketing is dead (10% open rate) I need the names of teachers you want to take this free course(you can take it too!) I will make the usernames and passwords, and email them to you
What Will Happen Next? I will email you a list of usernames and passwords for each person who you want to take the course I will email you a PDF you can print out (or forward by email to your people) which explains step by step how to find the course and log in
