NR-509: ADVANCED PHYSICAL ASSESSMENT Lab/Immersion Weekend Fact Sheet The Immersion weekend is the lab component of NR-509: Advanced Physical Assessment. It typically takes place during week 7 of NR-509 at the Q Center located in the western suburbs of Chicago (see address below), although location is subject to change. The Immersion Weekend provides an opportunity for you to demonstrate competence in your health assessment skills and engage in critical thinking. Immersion Weekend is designed to teach you proper assessment techniques on a variety of general medical complaints that help prepare you for your first practicum experience in NR-511. You will be provided with further details at the beginning of your NR-509 course but below you will find many details to help you prepare now! 2017 Dates February 17-19 April 10 12 (Weekday due to Easter) June 16 18 August 18 20 October 13 15 December 8 10 2018 Dates February 16 18 April 13 15 June 15 17 August 24 26 October 12 14 December 7 9 Friday is considered a travel day for out of town students. No planned FNP activities will take place on Friday. A link will be provided to you during the first week of your class. Recommended Accommodations You are responsible for making your own hotel reservation. While you are not required to stay at the Q-Center we highly encourage to you do so as weekend activities will take place there. The standard rooms at the Q Center are for single occupancy. If you would like to upgrade to a larger room, you may do so through the registration link that will be provided. Upgrades will be based on availability and are at the student s expense.
If you do not wish to stay at the Q Center, you will need to still register for a Day Pass. The Day Pass includes your food and beverages for the day and also covers your Q -Center meeting costs for the day s activities. Transportation If flying, you should fly into either O Hare International Airport (ORD) or Midway International Airport (MDW) Plan to arrive on Friday anytime. Do not book your return flight before 4:00pm on Sunday. The Q-Center is located 35 miles from O Hare International Airport and 45 miles from Midway International Airport. Please also bring your own stethoscope. *It is not recommended to wear a dress or jumper. A Chamberlain Lab Coat will be sent in the mail following the immersion. You will be asked for your specific sizing requirements during online registration. You may also request a Chamberlain photo ID badge. Do I have to attend the Immersion Weekend in the Chicago area? Yes. At this point in time, this is the only location where Immersion will be offered. 2. Will information regarding the weekend be available to allow for planning?yes. Information regarding travel arrangements will be provided to you in the NR-509 course. 3. When should I book a flight to arrive/depart? You should make your travel arrangements after the FNP Immersion Weekend Concierge sends you the information specific to your Immersion Weekend. You may arrive at the hotel any time on Friday, with hotel check-in starting at 4:00 PM. There are no activities planned for Friday as this is a travel day. It is recommended that you book your departing flight no earlier than 4:00 PM Central time on Sunday. 4. How are students evaluated at the Immersion Weekend? In NR-509, you will be provided materials from which to prepare and practice. You are expected to practice on your own prior to attending the Immersion Weekend. During the Immersion Weekend, you will be evaluated on your physical assessment skills. 5. What do I have to bring to Immersion Weekend? You are required to bring a stethoscope and the Immersion Weekend worksheets provided in the course resources tab in your classroom. You may also bring any study materials you feel necessary to prepare for the assessment. You are required to dress business casual, as you would wear for your clinical. Please be sure to check your class announcements for any other materials that may be required. 6. What if I can t make the Immersion weekend? If you are unable to attend you must notify your NR-509 professor and email the event coordinator, at fnpimmersion@chamberlain.edu of the extenuating circumstance. You might be granted an extension to complete the weekend during the next session, however the Immersion Weekend must be completed before you can begin the first practicum course, NR-511. 7. What if I arrive to the facility late on Saturday? You can still attend the remainder of the day s activities, but may miss important information necessary for the Sunday assessment. 8. What if my flight is cancelled last minute due to weather, etc.? You must communicate this immediately to your NR-509 professor and the event coordinator. You will then be contacted to discuss your options. 9. What if I don t pass the assessment? Please review your NR-509 syllabus and other class instructions for more details on failing immersion. 10. Do I have to stay at the hotel on-site? No. You are free to stay at the lodging of your choice, but you must find your own transportation to and from the activities on Saturday and Sunday, and report this to the site to receive parking privileges when registering for the day passes. You will be required to pay a daily fee, which includes your meals for the day.
11. Can I have a guest stay with me during the weekend? Yes. When booking the stay, you will select the appropriate room size to accommodate 1, 2, or 3 people. The guest who is not attending the event will have an additional one-time fee, charged by the hotel, added to the room cost. These fees may change from time to time, and you will be notified of the current additional cost upon online check-out. 12. Can I share a hotel room with another student? Yes. However, you will each need to register yourselves separately and indicate that you are sharing a room. The overall costs will be less than staying in individual rooms (about $135 savings total over the weekend). 13. I passed the Immersion Weekend but failed NR-509 coursework. Do I have to repeat Immersion Weekend? Please contact your instructor for further details. 14. Is the Immersion Weekend part of my overall course grade? Please review the NR-509 syllabus for more details on the final grade calculation. 15. What about the 25 hours of clinical (lab) experience? Can I count these towards my practicum? No. These are separate. Please see the NR-509 syllabus and other class material for more information regarding these hours.
