The speaker was Dr. George Bernard Brain, Superintendent of Public Schools for Baltimore City. The subject was Education and Economic Productivity. Review of Meeting 4/20/10 By Dan Taylor On a picture perfect April Tuesday, Rotarians and guests gathered at a new venue, the Hyatt Regency. In the opinion of this reporter, the menu was a cut above its predecessor. President Mary Anne gaveled the meeting to order; Bob DeLisle led in the anthem and pledge; Alvin Levi offered the invocation. A fine group of guests was recognized by Mary Anne and the Songbirds welcomed them musically. Acting Sarge Alvin levied fines on Rotarians in his ever creative manner. New member, Beullah Arends, was given her new member's packet by Mary Anne. Rotarian President elect, Jay Perry, and guest speaker, Ron "Fang" Mitchell were presented Paul Harris awards. Rotarian Vince introduced our guest speaker who is Head Basketball Coach at Coppin State University, Mitchell, entering his 24th season at Coppin State has an impressive record including eleven straight winning seasons, six 20-win seasons and is the all time winningest (371 career victories) at Coppin State. His speech consisted mostly of answers to questions from Rotarians. The meeting concluded by a reciting of the 4 way test. That s why we re introducing the Charm City Circulator (CCC), a fleet of 21 free shuttles that travel three routes in Baltimore City. We service residents, downtown employees, students and tourists and anyone else who wishes to ride. The shuttle is intended to reduce congestion and greenhouse gas pollution by offering a convenient, reliable and eco-friendly form of public transportation. The CCC consists of three separate routes the Green Route which runs from City Hall to Fells Point to Johns Hopkins, the Purple Route which runs from Penn Station to Federal Hill, and the Orange Route which runs from Hollins Market to Harbor East. We re not only dedicated to offering a stellar form of public transportation that links critical parts of the city we are interested in doing it in the cleanest way possible. That s why we ve chosen 21 DesignLine 2009 EcoSaver IV LF Hybrid Electric vehicles the first fleet of this type in a major metropolitan area. The Charm City Circulator was a part of former Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon s vision of a cleaner, greener Baltimore. We encourage all of our residents and visitors to use this service not only is it free, it s efficient. A shuttle arrives every 10 minutes at the designated stops on each route. Use it as your connector to your regular train, bus or commuter lot or just to get a taste of all Baltimore City has to offer. (www.charmcitycirculator.com) NOTICE: TURN IT OFF There will be a $5.00 fine enforced to anyone leaving their cell phone turned on during weekly meetings.
