This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution International License (CC BY). http://creativecommons.org/ /licenses/by/4.0/ ABSTRACT The main aim of this exploratory research is to formulate design concept of a Reading Kiosk as a prototype for community usage specifically in suburban area of Kuala Lumpur. In order to formulate the concept and suggest this prototype, three study objectives must be fulfilled as well: investigating the reading habits and pattern among the Malay community in suburban of Kuala Lumpur (case study of Perkampungan Tradisi, Jalan Gombak); studying the patron of public library in suburban area particularly in terms of visiting numbers, facilities requirement, borrowing pattern and other related issues; and lastly suggesting means and methods on how to nurture the reading habit among the Malay community in suburban area. A sample of 404 respondents was taken for dataa collection. Self-completed questionnaires were distributed to the respondents in the case study. Based on the analyses, it was found that a majority of the respondents indicated a positive attitude towards reading and the library. However, the majority spent almost of their leisure time doing activities other than reading. Two-thirds of the respondents highly agreed that reading would be more attractive with the existence of various facilities that supported an informal environment for reading, such as facilities that allowed people to talk, eat and listen to music while reading. Based on inferential and factor analyses, two physical factors could be extracted; i) facilities and services, ii) internal and external environment of reading places. These analyses confirmed that these two physical factors influence reading habit. The research then proposing some reading kiosk concept which using container as the main structure with various theme; i) Malay Traditional Design (Tunduk Padi Library) ii) Culture Enrichment and Interactive Learning iii) Modern Japanese and Traditional Malay Design. This approach aimed to attract people to come and cultivating the reading habit. The knowledge acquired through this research should contribute to a better understanding of the phenomena of the reading habit and attitude in Malaysia specifically, and in contributing to future research in similar areas generally. There will be three (3) research teams which includes three IPTAs (IIUM, UiTM and UM). IIUM will be researching the concept of Reading Kiosk (which includes architecture, landscape, interior design and costing) as a prototype. Observation and questionnaire survey of the library clientele and community of Perkampungan Tradisi, Jalan Gombak will fulfil for the first and second objectives. Literature review, study results and design skill of the researchers will be used for deriving the concept laid as the fourth objective. While the analytical results and conclusions from all the above objectives will be helpful in fulfilling the third objective. Finally, the expected outcomes from this research is a novel concept of a Reading Kiosk and documentation on reading culture system suitable for policy framework of the relevant implementing authorities particularly the Ministry of Education and Local Authorities especially DBKL. Literature Review: Many researches have been conducted to assess the reading habit of individuals. Research on reading habit has been conducted on youngsters, on college students, and in particular cultures and society, such as Malaysian [9]. Based on the previous studies conducted, most of the studies are concerned with the factors that influence the reading habit. Based on the diagram above, the gap in this literature has been identified, and it found that no studies had been conducted in assessing the association between physical factors and reading preferences. Reviews undertaken found that there is a lack of evidence to substantiate that physical factors influence the reading preferences, as is the concern of this research. Thereby, it is the interest of the research to investigate the relationship between physical factors and reading preferences, thus investigating the suitable concept of a reading kiosk that can attract people to come and read which shall be the final output of this research. 3.1 The Reading Habit in Malaysia: In a survey conducted by the Malaysian National Library it was found that Malaysians read an average of only two books a year in 1996. Furthermore, a survey conducted by the Malaysian National Library in 2006 revealed that the literacy rate had slightly decreased to 92% from 93% in 1996 (Malaysian National Library, 2006). Based on this result, there has been no increase in the amount of reading over the past ten years. Methodology: Survey and questionnaires had been designed to collect the data. The population is the residents of Perkampungan Tradisi Jalan Gombak. Total sample size is 404 people. There were 404 forms had been distributed to the residents of Perkampungan Warisan Jalan Gombak. Convenience Sampling had been chosen as the method of sampling. A total of 404 samples were selected, aged between 6 and 60 years. All residents were having the same opportunity to be selected as the sample in this study. The analysis found that 56% of respondents liked to visit the library. However, the library was seldom visited by respondents. More than half of respondents had visited the library for leisure purpose and 24% of respondents visited the library to study.

Based on the findings, almost two in five (39%) respondents spent 2 hours on reading, followed by 28% who spent more than 2 hours on reading. 19% of respondents spent 1 hour on reading and the remaining 14% spent 30 minutes on reading. A majority of respondents spent more than 2 hours on reading. The results also show that 28% of respondents chose novels as their most liked reading material followed by comics, academic books, magazines and newspapers. It is followed by RII 0.820 and 0.818, which indicate that respondents strongly agreed with a relaxing atmosphere where they can lounge and eat while reading. Nevertheless, the respondents also agreed with reading environments where watching television and chatting with friends were allowed while reading. On the analysis of Chi Square between gender and feeling towards visiting library, findings show that it is fail to reject the null hypothesis as the sig-value is more than 0.05 (p>0.05). Similar result found on the Chi Square Analysis between age and purpose of visiting library where it is fail to reject the null hypothesis as the sigvalue recorded is 0.208, which is more than 0.05 (p>0.05). However, based on results of crosstabulation analysis between age and purpose of visiting library, it found that majority of the respondents with any age category were visiting library for leisure purpose. Somehow, the respondents aged between 13 to 17 years old which refer to the secondary school students were visiting library in order to study or do their homework. T-Test had been carried out to test to test the significant between physical factors (built environment) and reading habit. In this case, the variable of time spent in reading if attractive reading place was built represent the physical factor of a reading place. If the physical factors influence the preference of people to read which refer to the reading habit, it must be increment on the mean of time spent between before and after the attractive reading place was built. Based on the analysis of T- Test between these variables, there was a statistically significant improvement in time spent in reading between the current and the time spent in reading if the attractive reading place was built. The mean time spent in reading if the attractive reading place was built is higher than the mean of the present time spent in reading. In addition, the sig-value recorded is 0.000 which is less than 0.05 (p<0.05). All indicators show that null hypothesis is rejected. Therefore, it shows that the physical factors of reading place influencing the reading habit. Thus, the development of the reading kiosk should consider the physical factors as it influence the reading habit. 4.6 Factor Analysis: In addition to support the research hypothesis, Factor Analysis had been conducted. Factor Analysis

The variables such as types of reading material, rules of library, services offered at the library, arrangement of reading material and comfort of reading space were included under one factor, which is Facilities and Service. The variables of interior decoration of library, ventilation, lighting and colours of the walls were categorized under the Internal Design factor. Based on this factor analysis, the findings showed that the factor extracted, which are the Facilities and Services and Internal Design, were considered as the physical factors. Therefore, it can be concluded that Facilities and Internal Design factors are the physical factors that influence the reading habit. Overall, these two factors, which are facilities and internal and external environment, should be considered in any development of a reading place. Based on an overall analysis, research objective number one, two and three have been achieved. Recommendations: Based on the findings, some recommendations on the concept of reading kiosk were drawn. The findings indicate that the respondents preferred to have such an informal reading environment which is totally different with the current library concept. Therefore, the research had suggested some idea on the reading kiosk concept that hoping to be an approach to encourage reading habit among the citizen. 5.1 Using the idea of portable container design: Recently, there are increasing in demand of using container as the structure of the buildings due to its strength and low expenses. Basically, this research is proposing some concepts of reading kiosk which is using the container as the main structure. 5.1.1 Theme 1: Malay Traditional Design; Tunduk Padi Library:

46 Mansor Bin Ibrahim et al, 2015 / Research Journal of Social Sciences 8(13), Special, Pages: 40-47 The concept is focusing on paddy plant character while bringing the concept based on the malay proverb, bawa resmi padi, makin tunduk makin berisi, which means the more knowledgeable you are, the more humble you become. This natural character of paddy plant gives an example for us as human being when seeking knowledge. The reading kiosk were designed based on the elements or characters of the paddy plant and humbleness such as the seed s shape, colour scheme, and material. The surrounding environment of paddy field also being used to create the sense of relaxing, and contribute to the good views, ventilation and feelings. 5.1.2 Theme 2: Culture Enrichment and Interactive Learning: The motif of Engkeramba derived from the Pua textile is applied in a rather geometric form onto the book shelves of the mobile library. The shelves not only are functional to hold countless number of books, but they also become the front and back facades of the library. Since the upper floor of the container is catered for children, the bookshelf on the upper floor are beautified with translucent and colourful tampered glass in which instills the sense of fun and active of the design. Contrary, the bookshelf on the ground floor has no glass, since the area is catered for the public users both on the inside and outside as it stores two rows of books on the inside and outside. 5.1.3 Modern Japanese and Traditional Malay Design: Design concept for this reading kiosk initially comes from Modern Japanese design with the fusion of Malay traditional house and modern design. The contemporary minimalist design with the glass material at the interior and exterior, are blend with the traditional wooden and traditional elements and other typical old oriental architectures. Conclussion: The nurturing of the reading habit of the citizen is not only reliant on the roles of institutions such as schools and libraries, but it also depends on the individual and parents' initiative to cultivate the love of reading. The fact is that the literacy rate among Malaysian is still low even though many strategies have been implemented to nurture the reading habit among Malaysian citizens. This research was conducted in an attempt to enhance the understanding about reading habit among Malaysian specifically in the suburban areas of Kuala Lumpur. In this effort, the residents of Perkampungan Tradisi Jalan Gombak were chosen as respondents. In the overall analysis, results indicated that some respondents described reading as a boring activity. In addition, the respondents demanded an informal reading place environment that allowed other activities such as chatting, eating and listening to music, which seems to be totally different with the concept and system of most of the current library concepts in Malaysia. This research proposes some concepts of reading kiosk, aiming to attract people to come and there by cultivating the reading habit. The knowledge acquired through this research should contribute to a better understanding of the phenomena of the reading habit and attitude in Malaysia specifically, and in contributing to future research in similar areas generally. Since this study may be treated as a case study, the results should contribute greatly in terms of methodology for studies to be conducted at different levels of population or with a broader population scope.
