Presenta(on Outcomes What does the portrait of a 21 century learner look like? What are the Common Core Standards? Why do we have Common Core Standards? What will the transition to the Common Core look like in Evergreen?

A Vision of K 12 Students Today

21 st Century Learning

Focus of Common Core Standards Math Standards for Mathematical Practice ELA College and Career Readiness Standards

Why the Common Core State Standards? Ensure that our students are provided a vision of what it means to be an academically literate person in the twentyfirst century; provided with rigorous content and applications of higher knowledge through higher order critical thinking skills; meeting college and career expectations; and prepared to succeed in our global economy and society.

States that have adopted the Common Core State Standards 5 States Left

Key Advances of CCSS Greater clarity and coherency across grade spans Reading Attention to text complexity Balance of literature and informational texts Writing Emphasis on argument and informative/ explanatory writing Speaking and Listening Inclusion of formal and informal talk Integrates media sources across the standards

Benefits of the CCSS Internationally benchmarked Evidence and research based Expectations clear to students, parents, teachers, and the general public Costs to the state reduced Consistent expectations for children nationwide

NAEP Alignment in Reading Grade Literature Information 4 50% 50% 8 45% 55% 12 30% 70% Percentages do not imply that high school ELA teachers must teach 70% informational text; they demand instead that a great deal of reading should occur in other disciplines.

Teaching Content is Teaching Reading

What s new in Science and Social Science? Current Standards focus on describing what the content should look like in subject matter classes. Common Core State Standards describe what the reading and writing should look like in subject matter classes.

Assessment: What We Know Assessments will begin in 2014 California has recently signed on with SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) Assessments will include: Computer Adaptive Assessments (interim & summative) Performance Assessments (interim & summative)
