Buenos AIres Argentina Early in the twentieth century, Buenos Aires, the city of fair winds, became one of the world s great cities. By the tens of thousands, European immigrants sailed across the Atlantic to the Paris of Latin America looking for a better life. Money seemed no object in those days. Fueled by the great agricultural wealth that came from the heart-land of the nation, great new buildings and monuments were the order of the day. In 1908, a grand opera house opened its doors to world acclaim and became a symbol of Buenos Aires wealth and sophistication. By 1913, the city had Latin America s first underground metro system in operation. The city continued growing through two world wars and a global economic crisis in the 1930s. GEO partners with Road2Argentina to place students in an unpaid two-month summer internship program. Students work five days per week, living with an Argentinian family in a home stay arrangement or in a shared apartment. Students gain valuable global work experience and professional skills in various industry fields, while also earning Mason resident credit, and enjoying the culturally rich, historic Argentine capital of Buenos Aires. Student housing is in a home stay arrangement with an Argentine family or individual (includes breakfast and dinner), or in a shared apartment/dormitory. Buenos Aires, Argentina bit.ly/2gozsgk 8

Budapest Hungary Migration and the Refugee Crisis in Europe According to estimates, over one million refugees and migrants entered the European Union since 2015. This tidal wave of migration has been caused by wars in Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq, poverty in states such as Kosovo and Albania, and unrest and uncertainty in a number of other states outside Europe. At the same time, a number of factors have attracted these migrants to Europe, including jobs, safety, and family unification. The refugees plight has sparked an unparalleled humanitarian crisis which has not been seen since the World War II leading to an ongoing political turmoil with far reaching implications beyond Europe s borders. The crisis has led to new political and social divisions causing realignments within the Europe Union, and leading to an intense debate on how Europe should handle the crisis both on its external borders and inside the continent. The Brexit vote is a case in point. English-speaking internship placements are limited; students take a two-week intensive Portuguese language course for the first two weeks of the program. Upon completion of the course, students work five days a week for 7 weeks; a semi-intensive Portuguese language course is available during week 3.
