Department of Emergency Medicine 989-583-6817 FAX: 989-583-7436 February 13, 2012 Dear EMRA Awards Committee: I am writing today to nominate an extraordinary medical student, Daniel Kemple, for the Dr. Alexandra Greene Medical Student Award. Dan is currently a third year medical student at Ross University School of Medicine. I first met Dan during his first year while I was teaching at Ross. He was the president of the EM interest group there for the majority of his time on the island and took an already ambitious group and turned it into a campus powerhouse. Attendance at events quintupled under his leadership. Each semester he organized five guest lectures, including one lecturer from Oklahoma; five workshops, including a chest tube and cricothyrotomy cadaver lab; a weekly diabetes clinic; and weekly trips to the island s hospital for members to shadow me when I worked in the emergency department. The EM interest group averaged more than one event a week over the course of the semester. Dan coordinated and attended every lecture and workshop, and delivered many of the lectures himself. His passion for the field and the growth of his and his peers education was unparalleled in my time there. As a paramedic supervisor for Ross Emergency Medical Services, Dan also acted as my eyes, ears, and hands when caring for a seriously ill or injured patient. When he contacted me about a patient he was practicing medicine under my license, as my agent, and I trusted him with that responsibility implicitly. As a supervisor with REMS Dan had to be on call every fourth night for every semester that he was on Dominica. Every non-straightforward patient that the basic EMTs saw got called in to Dan, no matter what time of night. I d like to re-emphasize that fact: Dan was on call every fourth night during his first two years of medical school. Unfortunately student and faculty illness and injury were not uncommon on Dominica and Dan often had to put his schoolwork aside to take care of patients. Dan s stellar ability to maintain confidentiality and a professional demeanor under duress was tested many times as he treated his faculty and fellow students. Dan was also invaluable as a member of the Disaster Response Committee at Ross. Dominica, a small, poor, volcanic Caribbean island, faced its share of disasters: volcanoes, floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, and infectious disease epidemics. For example, Dan was asked by the Dean to take the lead in the purchase of two fully stocked mass casualty incident supply trailers, capable of treating 500 patients. The university made this purchase, totaling roughly 100,000 dollars, based on his recommendations. In addition to these two major roles, Dan s professionalism and leadership were further recognized by his peers as they elected him to serve as president of the Ross University Student Government Association Honor Council. In this position he was responsible for the investigation
and hearing of cases referred for honor code violations, which requires a studentt of strong ethical integrity. Dan is currently doing his third year rotations and is scheduled to hiss first EMS elective with us at Synergy this spring. As the Clerkship Director I am eagerly awaiting the opportunity to work with him clinically again; as the Assistant Program Director I am looking forward to seeing his residency application in our ERAS inbox. Please do not hesitatee to contact me if I can give you anyy further information or assist in any way. Sincerely, Christian Jacobus, MD, FACEP Assistantt Program Director/Clerkship Director Synergy Medical Education Alliance Assistantt Professor, Emergency Medicine Michigan State University College of Human Medicine
