COHESION USED IN NATIVE DEEN`S SONG LYRICS: ANALYSIS ON ITS GRAMMATICAL AND LEXICAL DEVICES ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to describe the kind of cohesion devices used in Native Deen`s song lyrics. The writer analyzed song lyrics because it is a kind of language use and also a kind of text. The use of song lyrics in teaching and learning English is very effective. Songs construct the experience of learning English that relaxed and enjoyable one. A descriptive research design was applied in this study. It was also a qualitative one because the description on the analysis was not ordinarily expressed in quantitative terms. The population of this study was 67 song lyrics of Native Deen`s songs from each album released until the time of conducting the study. Simple random sampling was defined to select 3 song lyrics from the first album until the third album. A document analysis was the instrument used to collect the data. Data analysis was formulated as follows: printing, reading, and identifying all types of cohesion devices found in Native Deen`s song lyrics. This study showed the following findings. Almost all types of cohesion devices proposed by Halliday and Hasan in Tanskanen (2006:15) can be found in Native Deen`s song lyrics. Personal and demonstrative references were found in Native Deen`s song lyrics. The kind of substitution used in Native Deen`s song lyrics were nominal and verbal substitutions. Temporarily, the kind of ellipsis found in Native Deen`s song lyrics was only nominal ellipsis. Afterwards, kinds of conjunction used in the lyrics were additive, adversative, and causal conjunctions. For the second type of cohesion devices, lexical cohesion devices, the writer found repetition and synonym as part of reiteration used in Native Deen`s song lyrics. The writer also found the use of collocation in the lyrics. The writer proposes some suggestions to English teachers, English students, and future researchers. The English teachers should introduce and teach their students about cohesion devices and they can use song lyrics as alternative source of teaching media. English students should master cohesion devices that will enable them to maintain the continuity of thought and idea and also to create the effective and efficient sentences. As a final point, future researchers can use this study as a reference in conducting studies in the same field with larger sample and population with different song lyrics, or they can also study the use of cohesion devices in other sources.
