Our Lady of Fatima School Newsletter Our Vision Our Lady of Fatima Palmyra is a Catholic School that aspires to provide a respectful, secure and caring learning environment where our community is committed to following the teachings of Jesus. From the Principal Dear Parents, Fatima s Feast Day last Wednesday was a very memorable occasion for our community and especially for Lorraine Szefczyk. Lorraine celebrated 25 years of service to our Community and we were delighted to acknowledge and celebrate this milestone with her. We took this opportunity to invite all the past staff members who worked with Lorraine, to attend a special morning tea, which took place in the School Hall after our Whole School Mass. Whilst staff caught up with past colleagues, the children enjoyed an extended morning tea and an icy pole to help them celebrate the occasion. Then we transported all the children from PP-6 to Synergy playground in King s Park where the children had the chance to enjoy a picnic lunch together and explore the different parts of the magnificent playground. The weather was superb. My sincere thanks to all the parents who joined us on the day to assist with supervision. It was a fantastic community day. I am sure all the children, parents and staff slept well last Wednesday night! The previous Friday morning we also celebrated Mother s Day at OLOF. My sincere thanks to all the dads who assisted me ( Steve Gauci, Ryan Bacich, Rob De Sousa, John Wheeler, Steve Woods and Peter Canterbury) to make all the mothers and grandmothers feel special by serving coffee machine coffees (it seems many people have moved on from instant coffee), cups of tea and refreshments in the school hall. It was a great opportunity for us to spoil the mums in our community and acknowledge all the contributions they make to their families and this school community. Congratulations to all the children in Years 3 and 5 for the manner in which they navigated their way through the NAPLAN process last week. It is the first year I recall where every child was present for every test, which ensured a very straight forward week. The content in the tests was generally as expected, it is noticeable to see the increased literacy component in the maths assessment, but otherwise, as expected! Our Year 5 and 6 children will participate in another Winter Sports fixture this Friday 22 nd May when they will play Soccer, League Tag, Modcrosse and Handball against St Patrick s, Fremantle. Tomorrow we will be having a Pentecost Liturgy in the hall, starting at 9:00am. Father Francis flew out to the US last Wednesday for a fortnight, so we are not able to have a Mass, but please come and join us. The liturgy will be led by our Year 6 children and it fits neatly into their preparation programme for receiving the sacrament of Confirmation. The children have also spent today at New Norcia, quite a unique experience, as part of the preparation programme. Our Lady of Fatima School Ph 9333 7900 Fax 9339 4951 Email : office@olof.wa.edu.au Website : www.olof.wa.edu.au Wednesday 20th May Week 5 Term 2 PENTECOST PRAYER Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful And kindle in them the fire of Your love Send forth Your Spirit and they shall be created And You shall renew the face of the earth Let us Pray: O God, Who instructed the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, Grant us in the same Spirit to be truly wise and ever rejoice in His consolation. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen Finally, we have our Walk to School day this Friday. It is a chance to stretch the legs in the morning and for everyone to meet on the front grassed area, usually not too far from the coffee van for parents! We are taking this opportunity to also collect a gold coin from each child which will be passed on as the community s contribution to the Red Cross Nepal region Earthquake appeal. We are hoping to contribute to making their lives a little more bearable especially for those people who have been directly affected by the recent natural disasters in the area.

From the Principal (continued) Dates to Remember: Thursday 21 st May Pentecost Liturgy in the School Hall starting at 9am (PP-6) Friday 22 nd May Walk to School Day Thursday 28 th May School Photo Day Thursday 28 th May School Board Meeting at 7pm Friday 29 th May Year 5 Assembly Monday 1 st June WA Day Public Holiday Thursday 4 th June P&F Meeting at 7pm Best wishes for coming fortnight. Paul Hansen PRINCIPAL CROSS COUNTRY INFORMATION This year's Cross Country Carnival at Tompkins Park, 17th June 12.00-2.30pm, will see the Year Threes running the 1km course for the first time. The excited students have been running the distance at Millers Park and are very keen to see who will make the interschool team, which will be the fastest six boys and six girls from our carnival. WINTER SPORT INFORMATION Our Lady of Fatima will play St Patrick's on Friday 22nd May at Gibson Park. The games will start at 1.00pm and finish at 2.30. Parents are welcome to come and watch their children play two of the four winter sports involved in the winter sport programme. Osvaldo Celenza - Physical and Health Education 2015 FOOTY TIPPING COMPETITION Round 6 Round 6 saw a continuation of upset results which was reflected in the scores of all tipsters. The round winner managed to only pick 6 from 9! Well done to X-Man who won out from Cats Rule and CJRSP Briggs by his Friday night margin. (Phew! Keep the flag flying for the B-P s Xav!). Round 7 This round was a little more predictable, although no one picked Brisbane over Port Adelaide, which meant the highest score was 8 from 9. Ant knocked out X-Man and 3 others for the top spot this week with his Friday night margin. Well done! Overall competition leaders are Suzie, Matt Stingemore, Coach Buckley and Ballerina85 on 44 points, with 7 not far behind on 43. And isn t it great to see the WA teams ruling the roost is it too early to predict a derby grand final?! In other good news, everyone has paid their entry fees which means winners may now see Mrs Fic at the office for their winnings. The other good news is that we have 52 members this year and so not only have we raised more money for the P&F, but we ve got more to share around each week! Don t forget to put your tips in and best of luck! Virginia Bradshaw

O U R L A D Y O F F A T I M A P & F News 20 May 2015 FATIMA FEAST DAY Our Lady of Fatima Feast day, May 13th, was a busy day of celebrations at school! Firstly the mass hosted a surprise tribute to Mrs Lorraine Szefczyk for 25 years service. Lorraine received flowers and gifts from the school as well as a dinner voucher from the P&F. She walked through a guard of honor before laying flowers at the shrine of Our Lady near the office entrance. Lorraine then enjoyed a surprise morning tea with family and friends who have worked with her over the past 25 years. KINGS PARK ADVENTURE The P&F provided all students with a icy pole treat at morning recess before children embarked on their trip to Kings Park for the day. Thank you to the parents who assisted by supervising the outing to Kings Park. According to all sources, the day was a great success. The children had a great time, said Sharon Law-Davis. Without parents stepping up to help staff we would not be able to venture out into such an amazing environment.
