Welcome I am very pleased to welcome you to Perth for the Rural Health West. The theme for this year s conference The future of rural health care is appropriate as we also celebrate our 25 year milestone. We celebrate the successes of the past and look forward to the future working with you, the rural Western Australian doctors, to improve the health of rural Western Australian communities. We are excited to welcome three excellent keynote speakers who will present on a range of topics as well as provide you with the opportunity to participate in clinical updates, practical workshops and learning opportunities that are professionally accredited. I invite you to join us at the Rural Health West Doctors Service Awards on Saturday 15 March 2014 as we recognise the achievements of your colleagues. The Awards have been part of the Annual Conference program since 2008 and provide a unique opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding work of rural medical practitioners who are often the unsung heroes of many rural communities. Finally, I hope many of you will be joining us tonight for the 25 Year Anniversary Gala Dinner Dance. This dinner dance is to celebrate the organisation and the doctors it has supported over the last 25 years. The Minister for Health will launch a commemorative book which provides a concise history of the Western Australian Centre for Remote and Rural Medicine and its transformation into Rural Health West. The evening provides an opportunity to reflect, network with colleagues old and new and look excitedly towards the future. We look forward to celebrating with you. Keynote speakers Professor Richard Murray Dean of Medicine and Head of School School of Medicine and Dentistry James Cook University Professor Richard Murray is the Dean of Medicine and Head of the School at the James Cook University in Queensland. His career focus has been in Aboriginal health, rural medicine, public health, tropical medicine and the needs of underserved populations. Richard was appointed President of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine in late 2011. He is the immediate past Chair of the Federation of Rural Australian Medical Educators. Richard spent 14 years working in the remote Kimberley region of Western Australia, including 12 years as the Medical Director of the Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services Council, a position in which he had broadranging clinical, population health, teaching, research and medical administration and management roles. Professor Barry Marshall Co-Director The Marshall Centre for Infectious Diseases Research and Training The University of Western Australia Professor Barry Marshall has managed a Helicobacter pylori research group almost since his discovery of Helicobacter pylori with Robin Warren in 1982. He has received many honours for his work on Helicobacter pylori, most notably, the Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology in 2005. In 2007, Professor Marshall was awarded the honour of Western Australian of the Year and the Companion in the General Division of the Order of Australia (AC). In the past few years, his laboratory has developed enhanced methods for non-invasive studies on the molecular epidemiology of H. pylori, notably, rapid breath test methods and retrieval of the organism (and culture) from a swallowed string. Professor Marshall has also recently succeeded in drawing investor funding from international and national sources for the creation of Ondek; a small biotech company focused on developing new biologic delivery systems for vaccines and therapeutics, utilising the unique characteristics of genetically modified Helicobacter pylori.
