GENERAL DETAILS 1.1 Program Outcomes REVISED CURRICULUM HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA IN ENGLISH The Higher National Diploma in English course provides an opportunity for School leavers with GCE A Level qualifications to develop their proficiency in English Language, English Literature and Communication skills. The learners will be directed to follow an area of specialization during the second year in order to strengthen their chances of finding suitable employment. The course also aims at developing their personality, interpersonal skills and general transferable skills such as adaptability, decision making ability and organizational ability which are regarded as important requirements to meet employer expectations. 1.2 Entry Profile Applicants should possess one of the following qualifications (i) GCE (A/L) in 3 subjects (ii) GCE (A/L) in 3 subjects and a pass in English Literature and at least a credit pass (C) in English at GCE (O/L) (iii) GCE (A/L) in 3 subjects and a distinction pass (A or B) in English Language at the GCE (O/L) (iv) English Specialist Teacher Training Certificate; or College of Education Diploma for English Teachers (v) A pass at the National Certificate in English for Commerce, Industry and further Education conducted by the Department of Technical Education & Training with G.C.E. (A/L) three subjects
1.3 Summary of the New Curriculum The HND English new curriculum is a diploma program of two years duration. The two year program will be offered in a course unit system in four semesters. Each semester will have 15 weeks of course work. The total program would be of 64 credits. There are three specialization areas namely, English Language Teaching, Journalism, and English for Business Communication. There will be no in-plant training in specialization areas. Instead a practical component has been included for each course. 1.4 Assessment Policy Each module would be assessed by continuous assessment and semester-end examinations. 1.5 Time Allocation for Modules Time allocation would depend on the credit value of each module. The course comprises theory and practical components as follows: Core program 24 credits theory, 38 credits practical Specialization area 2 credits theory, 4 credits practical Support programme 7 credits practical 1 credit theory =15 ; 1 credit practical = 30 1.6 Certification a. After completion of Year 1 requirements, a National Certificate in English will be offered b. After completion of Year 2 requirements, the National Diploma in English will be offered c. After completion of Year 2 1/2 requirements with 6 months field training, the Higher National Diploma in English will be offered 1.7 Resource Availability Required resources to teach the modules in the new curriculum of the HND English diploma program have been identified for each module. It is imperative that these resources are made available if effective teaching/learning is to take place in the program and also for the achievement of the intended learning outcomes of the modules and the diploma program.
1.8 Training of Staff Members to Teach New Module Several new modules have been introduced to the proposed new curriculum of the HND English diploma program offered by SLIATE. To obtain the full potential of the newly developed modules as well as the revised modules it is essential that staff development programs are implemented so that the academic staff would have the required knowledge, skills and attitudes to teach and implement the modules in the new curriculum. Required resources to teach the modules in the new curriculum of the HND English diploma program have been identified for each module. It is imperative that these resources are made available if effective teaching/learning is to take place in the program and also for the achievement of the intended learning outcomes of the modules and the diploma program. 1.9 Training of Staff Members to Teach New Modules Several new modules have been introduced to the proposed new curriculum of the HND English diploma program offered by SLIATE. PROGRAMME STRUCTURE 2.1 Summary Core Programme A balanced English Programme which emphasizes the development of listening, speaking, reading, writing, language structure and usage, and literature will comprise the core curriculum. These subject areas are offered at three levels Basic, Intermediate and Advanced. During the first two semesters the basic and intermediate levels will be covered and the students who complete the first year s work successfully will be eligible for the National Diploma in English Certificate. This certificate will be recognized as an entry qualification to the Higher National Diploma in English Course. Specialization Areas During the second year specialization areas are introduced. Suggested courses are English Language Teaching Methodology, Journalism and Business English. Individual Project During the first semester of the second year students will start a project selecting a topic from the core curriculum or from the specialization area they are following, under the guidance and supervision of a lecturer. The completed work will have to be handed over at the
beginning of December and the project will be counted as one component in the final semester-end assessment Support Courses A study skills course will run throughout the first year Self access Learning is encouraged by providing resources such as using Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL), listening cassettes, TV, radio, video excerpts, a grammar bank, language games, reference books including dictionaries etc. under the guidance of a lecturer.
