Meta-Majs at Mott Community College AQIP Committee Rept December 1, 2016
Meta-Majs at Mott Community College The Meta-Majs AQIP Committee was fmed to develop meta-majs f Mott Community College. Definition: Meta-majs are sets of courses designed around seven broad subject areas f students who are undecided about their specific program of study but who have identified a broad area of interest. The meta-maj cluster of courses enables these students to exple this area of interest and its career options while earning credits in required gateway courses common across many fields of study. Meta-Maj Pathways: The Meta-Majs committee identified seven meta-majs f Mott Community College. These (with the exception of college readiness) closely align with Michigan Career Pathways, a model familiar to Michigan high school students. The Michigan Career Pathways are a derivative of Career Clusters and Programs of Study from The Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act. The meta-majs identified are: Arts, Humanities and Communication Business, Management, Marketing and Infmation Technology Engineering, Manufacturing, and Industrial Technologies Health Sciences Human Services, Social and Behavial Sciences Science, Natural Resources and Math College Readiness Meta-Majs Committee Rept P a g e 2

Health Sciences Description: The Health Sciences meta-maj is designed to help the student determine if an education in health care will help to meet the student s career and personal goals and is consistent with the student s academic skills and talents. All health care professions involve direct contact, care, and communication with patients who may be healthy ill. Students in each of the Health Sciences programs must have a strong aptitude and background in the biological and behavial sciences and in mathematics. Each of the Health Science programs is rigous and will provide an academic challenge to the student and requires a strong commitment to the selected pathway. This meta-maj will introduce the prospective health sciences student to the math and sciences required f each of the programs, as well as to other suppt courses (including the Introduction to Health Careers course), which will assist the student in determining which pathway best fits the student s individual interests, needs, and goals. Upon completion of the meta-maj, the student may continue onto one of the specific Health Sciences degree pathways. (Note: specific eligibility requirements and pre-requirements apply to each of the Health Sciences pathways. In addition, there may be strict grading and GPA requirements f the individual programs, as well as the number of attempts allowed f a course.)
