Discovery Summer Programs Registration Registration is now open for the Eau Claire Area School District Discovery Summer Program for any student entering grades 1-5 in the 2016-17 school year. Private school students who reside within the Eau Claire Area School District are all eligible to attend. The goal of the Discovery Program is to provide engaging learning experiences so that students can learn about areas of interest. To reach this goal, students who participate in the program are expected to attend daily unless they are ill or have a personal emergency. General information for ECASD Discovery Summer Program includes: June 13 June 30, 2016 Monday through Thursday 8:30am 10:00am 10:15am 11:45am or 8:30am-11:45pm 10:00 10:15 Supervised Recess Discovery Program Locations: Elementary Elementary Elementary Elementary Elementary Montessori Charter School Please note: Every effort will be made to provide Discovery Classes for all interested students. If the number of registrations exceed available seats for a particular class, a lottery will be used to determine who will be accepted into the class. This is a change from the past practice of first come, first served and will allow all interested students equal opportunity to participate. Confirmation of registration will be mailed to parents by May 31 st. Parents are responsible for transportation. Discovery Classes For Students Entering Grade 1 Course Location Description #MV02 #MV03 #MV04 #MV05 Camp Read and Count S more Welcome to Camp Read and Count S'more! Here in our future-first-grade campsite, we will explore the fun of camping while reading books around the campfire, writing in our camp journals, go fishing with Goldfish, and we'll use marshmallows for more than just s'mores! We'll sharpen our reading, writing and math skills in a variety of ways, all while feeling like we're on a weekend adventure at our favorite camping spot! Ocean Adventures Anchors away, ocean explorers! Are you ready to learn about the ocean and the animals that live in it? Come learn about animals that live in the deep blue sea! We will learn about the ocean and the animals in it as we read books, play games, and create crafts. We will use our reading, writing and math skills in many different activities such as animal research and solving story problems and equations. It's time for our ocean adventure to begin! #MV06 #MV07 Letting Loose with Dr. Suess Oh the places you'll go as we dive into the wacky world of Dr. Suess. This class explores favorite stories such as The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, One Fish, Two Fish and many more! Students will adventure into word families, rhyming, addition/subtraction, and writing throughout this class. We'll use games and projects based on popular Dr. Suess books to reinforce these important concepts. If you love silly stories and playing with words and numbers, you'll have a blast in On the Loose with Dr. Suess! #MT02 Montessori Cooking with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) In this exciting 3 week experience, children will work towards creating and running a coffee shop. Writing projects include invitation letters for this culminating event. Along the way, students will take part in engaging math activities to promote number fluency and pattern identification. Book groups will engage children in exciting literature with an interested group of readers. Simple snacks and meals will be prepared, and recipes will be collected into a cookbook that children can take home to share all summer long. Kitchen appliances will be disassembled and reassembled into creative kitchen inventions, and simple machines will be used to create Rube Goldberg contraptions to help us with the simplest tasks! In addition to engaging the children academically, we plan to offer our coffee shop as a way to say thank you to law enforcement, firefighters and senior citizens for everything they do for us and for our communities. Perhaps we ll get a fire truck or a police cruiser to stop by! #PH02 #PH03 Reading, Writing, and Creating Do you like to read books and make crafts? This is the class for you! We will read great books from great authors, such as Patricia Polacco and Julia Donaldson, to name a few. We will explore some exciting styles of art inspired my nature (yes, that includes animals!) to inspire your own masterpieces. Superhero Training Camp!!! Welcome to superhero school! This is the place where young super humans come to learn about their superpowers in reading, writing, math and science. Come show us your superhero strength and vision while training your superhero brain! Be ready to become the best superhero ever!!!! **superhero masks and capes not required** Exploring Español Exploring Español is an exploratory language class where students will learn basic Spanish phrases and vocabulary through hands-on experiences. Students will learn basic greetings, prepare foods from the Spanish speaking culture while learning common food names, and explore the outdoors on a nature walk while learning the names of the nature found all around us. This exploratory class will introduce the student to the Spanish language and spark an interest for future language experiences! Awesome Authors & Crazy Characters! Come explore books by popular authors who are responsible for creating the most wacky characters and stories! All of your favorite characters will be there to take us on reading, writing, art, and math adventures! Appearances by: Pete the Cat, Pigeon, Scaredy Squirrel, Chester, Lilly, Knuffle Bunny, and No David! Around the World! Come explore the world! We will work together in small groups and as a class to learn about culture. We will explore nations by reading stories, doing crafts, tasting different foods, virtual tours, and much more! Dive into the Learning Adventure as we explore the Ocean! Fishy, Fishy in the Sea, Come to school and learn with me! Students will enjoy a fun filled time exploring the ocean. We will focus on reading, writing, and math skills, as well as art and cooking. Students will make creative sea animals and learn just what goes on in the deep blue sea. So grab your flip flops and sunglasses because we are going to have a fin-tastic time learning this summer! #RS06 Be a Book Cook! ½ cup of fun, 1 cup of imagination and a tablespoon of surprises.that is what you will encounter at "Be a Book Cook". Come prepared each day to use your imagination as we cook up treats. Each treat we make will be connected to a children s literature book. At the end of summer school you will have your own "Be a Book Cook" cookbook to take home! If you like to bake, cook, have fun and use your imagination this class is for you! #RS07 Hot Diggety Dog! Join us for a dog-gone good time this summer as we explore the world of dogs! We will dig into some doggy literature, songs, and games. Guest speakers (veterinarian/groomer/trainer) will teach us about how they work with dogs. We will take a field trip, make treats, (for kids and dogs) create dog arts and crafts projects, learn the basic responsibility of caring for and owning a dog, have a service learning project for the Humane Society. We will end the summer with a puppy and pajama dog party. Come join us to find out all the fun. We hope you embark on this journey with us. We will have a howlin' good time learning about mans' best friend! 6

#RS08 Let s Be Authors Come discover all types of writing! We hear lots of fun stories and write our own! Everyone will create their own book and illustrate it! We will make our own writing journal. We will learn about poetry and create your own book of poems! #RS09 Summer Lovin Sunshine! Lemonade! Popsicles! Come enjoy the best things about summer! You will hear summer stories, learn songs and play games. Every day we will do a summer themed craft. Our class will play outdoor games and even make summer treats! #SD02 #SD03 #SD04 Animals and Numbers All Around Students will discover different animals from all over the world! They will learn about animals by reading and listening to books and videos. The students will create books of their own about animals. Students will also discover how they use math in their everyday life. They will learn math strategies and use their math skills in different activities; such as bowling, card games, cooking, party planning and many more activities. Reading is FUN! This class will focus on many different genres of books. Come and join us for an adventure into Wisconsin s woodlands, marshes, rivers, and ponds. We will be looking at life cycles, animal habitats, and animal traits. We will be learning alongside wild life biologists and other experts in the field as we journey to far off places while never leaving the classroom through our virtual fieldtrip explorations. We will increase our awareness and knowledge through hands on experiments and data collection throughout our summer school experiences. #RB05 Superhero Training Camp!!! Welcome to superhero school! This is the place where young super humans come to learn about their superpowers in reading, writing, math and science. Hands on Earth Science Come and join us for a fun filled look at how the earth works, from examining rocks and minerals to understanding earthquakes and volcanoes. We will engage in hands on lab experiments, including discovering the purpose of rocks and minerals to designing our own earthquakes and volcanoes. We will also take virtual tours of some of North America s National Parks and discover the rock formations and how they got there!
