2013 Languages: Tamil GA 3: Written component GENERAL COMMENTS Some students performed well on the 2013 Tamil written examination. However, there were some who did not perform well. The marks allocated for a response, the question itself and the amount of answer space provided should be used as a guide to the length of the answer required. Some students copied parts of the questions to fill the answer space and others included irrelevant information, which did not earn them any marks. Many students took detailed notes about the information they had heard in the Listening and Responding section; however, most could not supply the correct information when responding to the questions. Teachers and students are reminded that the examination will not consist solely of questions that require translation or the simple recall of information. While there may be some simpler items, there will also be some items aimed at a higher cognitive level, requiring analysis, synthesis or evaluation. SPECIFIC INFORMATION This report provides sample answers or an indication of what the answers may have included. Unless otherwise stated, these are not intended to be exemplary or complete responses. Section 1 Listening and Responding This section assessed students knowledge and skill in analysing information from spoken texts. In Part A, questions were in English and students were required to respond in English. The assessment criterion related to this part is to understand general and specific aspects of texts by identifying and analysing information, and convey information accurately and appropriately. Students were required to listen to the texts attentively and read the questions carefully, break them down to find the key words or phrases, then answer appropriately according to the criterion. Students were allowed to take notes at any time and could use monolingual and/or bilingual dictionaries to check unfamiliar words. In Part B, questions were in English and Tamil, and students were required to respond in Tamil. In Section 1, students should ensure that they respond to the questions in the appropriate language they give their answers in the allocated spaces on the paper all responses are based on information from the texts they do not use the same piece of information to answer two questions. Part A Answer in English Students were presented with three texts in Tamil and were only expected to respond in complete sentences when asked. Students were expected to respond using relevant, accurate and appropriate connecting words to demonstrate that they had fully understood the question. Text 1 Question 1a. The aim of the competition is to promote intercultural understanding and interaction among teenagers. Some students did not give the correct aim of the competition. Question 1b. Students must consult the criteria on the web write an article of fewer than 1000 words on the topic have the article certified by the principal email the entry to the newspaper before 5 pm on 30 November 2013. Most students did not list all the things students needed to do to meet the requirements. Tamil GA 3 Exam VICTORIAN CURRICULUM AND ASSESSMENT AUTHORITY 2014 1

Text 2 Question 2a. Students were expected to describe how the computer operator uses this new product. The computer operator designs the required item on the computer selects the colour, material and size prints in three dimensions. Most students responded well to this question. Question 2b. The brother shows care for his sister by thinking about how the new product would help her in her profession. His sister is frank with him in giving her opinions/feelings and ignoring his suggestion about buying the product. He jokes with his sister about a houseful of sandals. The majority of students were able to answer this question correctly and obtain full marks. Some students mistakenly wrote about the tone and language used by siblings. Text 3 Question 3a. The families want to spend a whole day together at the zoo because Mathavi s last visit was cut short. They want to see the tiger cubs again. Question 3b. She made the same/a common mistake; they were both wrong in saying that tigers live in Africa. Question 3c. Indian and Siberian tigers have interbred. There are no African tigers. Purebred tigers have become extinct in countries other than Australia, where they can still be seen. Part B Answer in Tamil Students were presented with two listening texts. Section 2 Reading and Responding Part A Answer in English Text 7 Question 7a. related to personal qualities and Question 7b. related to cultural behaviour. It was evident that many students did not understand the distinction between personal qualities and cultural behaviour in the text. Students are reminded that they are expected to supply answers from the information given in the text. Information in students answers that is not derived from the text is considered irrelevant. However, reasonable inferences from the text are acceptable. Question 7a. Serve others as much as you can and do your duty, whether you like it or not. Get along with everyone, despite their differences. Try your best to avoid problems. Be proud of yourself, your country and your achievements. Question 7b. Section 2 Reading and Responding Part B Answer in Tamil Text 9 Question 9 Students were required to write the text of a radio interview in order to promote the work of a Senior Citizens Association. Some students wrote a creative and interesting script for the radio interview, including an introduction and a conclusion. The following are phrases from high-scoring responses. Section 3 Writing in Tamil In this section, students were required to demonstrate their ability to write an original text in Tamil on one of four questions. The responses were assessed using the following criteria. relevance and depth of treatment of ideas, information or opinions accuracy and range of vocabulary and sentence structures the capacity to structure and sequence response and capacity to use conventions of the text type Many students responded very well to the questions in this section. However, some students responses were not in the required format or text type. Many students wrote well-planned and well-written pieces that were coherent and varied in vocabulary and sentence structure. Their pieces were accompanied by the skilful and apt use of proverbs and relevant ideas, and it was evident that these students had a sound understanding of grammar, syntax and vocabulary, and the ability to use their knowledge effectively. Many students expressed themselves clearly, but quite a few made mistakes with spelling. Correct spelling, punctuation, appropriate use of vocabulary, tense and syntax will assist students to score high marks in this section. Tamil GA 3 Exam Published: 7 July 2014 4
