CODE Multimedia Manual network version Introduction With CODE you work independently for a great deal of time. The exercises that you do independently are often done by computer. With the computer programme you can watch video extracts, listen to listening comprehension texts, and practise with words, rules, routines, understanding, and repeating and listening. A number of exercises are part of the tasks in the task book: these are referred to in the task book. Furthermore, you will find exercises for vocabulary, understanding and repeating, rules and routines in each chapter. The programme registers your results. Each chapter also contains a test. In short, you can work with CODE in accordance with the following steps: Log in and choose a part; Select a chapter or choose for extra exercises rules or extra exercises routines; Start practising; Look at your results; Optional: forward your results; Close the programme. These steps are further described below. 1 Log in and choose a part Start the CODE Multimedia programme and log in by selecting your group and your name from a list, then enter your password. Your teacher will provide you with this password. You then enter the welcome screen, in which you can choose a part (1, 2 or 3). Choose a part in this screen. 1/11

Messages and Settings If your teacher has left you a message, it is shown in the welcome screen. You can view the last five messages with the Berichten button. You can also change the programme settings in this screen. Click on the Instellingen button to do so. The following screen will then appear: In this screen you can change the settings. The settings are the following: Language Choose a language: Dutch, Arabic, Turkish, French, English, or Spanish. The instructions of the exercises will then be shown in the language chosen. The explanation of the buttons will also appear in that language. You can have the programme explained to you in one of the help languages, when you click on the Help button. Show the right answer The Zet goed function can be switched on or off. If the Zet goed button is on, there is a button available during the exercises, which can be used to show the right answers. If you use this function, your score for this exercise will be insufficient. 2/11

E-mail address Here you can enter your e-mail address. The programme needs this in order exchange information between the computer at school and the one at home. This is not possible at all schools. Ask your teacher whether this can be done at your school. 2 Select a chapter or extra exercises When you have chosen a part, a menu will appear in which you can select a chapter. You can also choose for extra oefenen - regels of extra oefenen - routines. When you have selected a chapter, a screen will appear in which you may choose for exercises with respect to words or rules. You then select Oefenen. Select Taak if you wish to do the exercises of a task in the task book. You can also do the test belonging to that chapter: Toets. Practising If you choose Oefenen, a menu will appear in which you can choose a skill. You can choose from: verstaan en nazeggen, woorden, routines, regels en luisteren. Each skill has one or more series of exercises, indicated by a picture and a number. Each series contains a maximum of eight exercises. Above each series of exercises is a small bar. If the exercises have not been done the bar is dark blue, but if the exercises of that series have been completed, the bar will turn light blue. Above the title of the skill, green, red and grey cubes indicate how well you have done in the exercises. Green is good and red is bad. Grey means that the exercise has not yet been done. In this screen you can choose a skill. 3/11

Task The tasks in the task book can be found under Taak. These are for example the exercises for which you have to look at a video or listen to a text. If the exercises in the task book need to be done by computer, the task book will refer to the computer. In this screen you can choose for one of the tasks. Each task consists of one or more exercises. The picture indicates what kind of exercise it concerns: are you going to listen or are you going to watch a video? for these series of exercises you are to watch a video extract. for these series of exercises you are to listen to a text. for these series of exercises you are to look at one or more illustrations. 4/11

The results of the task exercises are not kept. However, you can see which exercises you have done and which you have not. If the bar above the exercise is dark blue, you have not yet done the exercise. If the bar above the exercise is light blue, you have done the exercise completely or partly. Anyway, not all tasks contain exercises to be done by computer. Tests For each chapter is a test of approximately 23 questions available. The test will take about thirty minutes. If you do not complete this test, your results will not be saved. So make sure that you have enough time to complete the test. You can either do the test at the end of the chapter, before or halfway, as the test is different each time. This way it is easy to check your progress on the subject matter of a particular chapter. Extra exercises rules and extra exercises - routines The exercises for rules and routines are recorded in registers. These registers can be opened from the Kies hoofdstuk screen. You can choose between: extra oefenen regels of extra oefenen routines. In the register you can search by subject (rules), or title and headword (routines). This way you can easily find the subjects that you want to do more exercises for, or that you want to look at again. The register does not only contain exercises, but also information about subjects. Those are the information boxes Rules and Routines from the task book. 5/11

3 Doing the series of exercises When you have chosen a series of exercises, irrespective of whether this is for Task, Practice or Extra excersises, a number of exercises (eight at the most) will one by one appear on the screen. Instructions are available for all exercises, also in the help languages (see 1 Log in and choose a part). The Help button explains (also in the help languages) about what the exercise is intended for, and part of the exercise is demonstrated. When you have answered all the questions of an exercise, click on the Kijk na button. You are then shown which answers were correct and which ones were not. You are given a second chance for some of the exercises. When you have finished, you can continue and go to the next exercise by clicking on the Verder button. You can go back to a previous menu with the Ga naar button. There is also a Zet goed button. When this button is used, all the right answers are put in the right places. You can no longer score sufficiently for that exercise. The Zet goed button can be switched on in Instellingen (see 1 Log in and choose a part). At the top of the screen you can see which exercises you have not done correctly yet. These exercises will be offered to you again at the end of the series of exercises. Ga Help Kijk Zet Info Verder Woordennaar na goed boek 6/11

For the exercises of the rules and routines skills, you may consult the information box from the task book belonging to that exercise by clicking on the Informatie button. The dictionary CODE also contains a digital dictionary. The CODE words to be learned can be looked up in this dictionary. You can call the dictionary by clicking on the Woordenboek button. You can search for a word in the list (scrolling) or by entering the word you are looking for in the search box. You have to click on the magnifying glass for this. Within the exercises, texts or information boxes, you can select a word of the text or exercise. For this, you first click on the Woordenboek button. A small dictionary symbol will then appear, and with that symbol you can select a word and click on it. You immediately get the word you are looking for. However, the word does have to be a word to be learned in CODE. The dictionary is a handy instrument to quickly look up the meaning of a word appearing in a text or exercise. As not all words are registered in this dictionary, you do need a paper dictionary as well. 4 Results In the screen in which you select the series of exercises, is a small blue bar above each of those series. This bar is dark blue if you have not done any of the exercises of that series. The bar turns light blue if you have completed the series fully or partly. The result is also indicated per skill (for example for words or listening comprehension). Green indicates the percentage of correctly answered exercises, red the percentage of wrongly answered exercises, and grey means that the exercises have not yet been done. For the task exercises no scores are kept. These exercises are part of the task, and the result of just a part would not provide enough information. The results of the last two tests are saved. You can look at the results by clicking on the Resultaten button. The results are presented per chapter. You may print this overview, save it on your own computer or a disk, or forward it by e-mail. You can then forward your results from home to school and vice versa. The latter function is only available if the school has installed this function. Ask your teacher if this is the case at your school. 7/11

5 Forwarding your results If the Versturen button is available, you can forward your results to any e-mail address, for example from school to your home address or from your home address to school. The first time you must send your details from school to your home address. This is essential to make sure that your details are registered correctly. These e-mail messages are automatically processed at school, but at home you have to open the message and click on the attachment with the CODE icon in the message. You may also save the file on the hard disk of your computer and open it by double-clicking on it in Explorer. Your results will then be updated. You always have to think of it yourself to forward the results to school or to your home address. When you make use of exchanging the results, you will find that you also have to log in at home, like at the educational institute, with the same name and the same password as used in the institute. 6 Stop To Stop, choose the button Ga naar. Choose Stoppen. Enjoy working with CODE Multimedia! 8/11

The buttons of CODE Multimedia With this button you can go to the next screen. With this button you can go back one step in the programme. For example, you can go to another chapter, another text or another skill. You can also go back to the starting screen or stop the programme. With this button you can go back to the previous screen. When you click on this button you are given an explanation about the way the programme works or the intention of an exercise. When you click on this button, you go directly onto the internet. This is only possible if there is an internet connection. With this button you can go to the settings screen. Here you can select another language and switch the Show the right answer function on or off. With this button you can close the screen. You go back to the previous screen. With this button you can go to the CODE dictionary. 9/11

With this button you can search for words in the dictionary by entering them into the screen yourself. With this button you can look at the information belonging to the rule or routine. With this button you can go the overview of the results. Here you see the percentage of correctly answered question for each chapter and each test, per skill. With this button you can save your results. This is only necessary if you want to use them for a specific purpose. CODE automatically saves the results in the CODE results database. When you click on this button your results will be printed. However, the computer does need to be connected to a printer for this. This button is shown at the results overview, if the educational institute makes use of registration exchange. Click on this button if you want to forward the results to your own e-mail address. Here you can see how well you did for the exercises. Green is good and red is bad. Grey means that the exercise has not yet been done. When you click this button, you can listen to a text, exercise or word. With an audio or video panel you can play, stop or fastforward/rewind (as for a tape recorder) the audio or video. 10/11

When you click this button, the exercise will be checked. A red cross means wrong. A green checkmark means right. In some cases you may try again. When you click on this button, the right answers of the exercise will be given. The button only works if Show the right answer is switched on in the settings screen. When you click on this button, you are given some assistance with the exercise. When you click on the microphone, you can record yourself talking. If you click on the arrow, you can hear yourself back again. 11/11
