SEMINAR REPORT MOTIVATION Respecting the initiatives and efforts being taken by GIC of The Gujarat Technological University, Chandkheda and following the inspiring words of Dr. Akshai Agrawal, Hon ble VC- GTU, innovation in the academic by introducing the Design engineering as a subject. Several directional movements that propagate innovation from the academics based on this subject. Several industries may also take benefit of the process followed by students through this subject. In connection to this, the Electronics & Communication Engineering Department at Madhuben & Bhanubhai Patel Women Institute of Engineering for studies & Research in Computer & Communication Technology, (063), New V.V.Nagar had organized and conducted a One-Day Seminar on Design Engineering on 13 th - February, 2015 for the faculties of different engineering college, among Vallabh Vidyanagar zone. The Seminar was attended by a number of faculties of different colleges wherein they were introduced to the subject and process through this seminar. It was an attempt to provide first-hand understanding on the subject of Design Engineering with details to proceed with students in the semester IV for the DE-1B.
TOPICS AND SCHEDULE The seminar was conducted with following schedule and topics following sticking with the time schedule imparting yet another lesson of time management to the students. Introduction & Orientation about DE concept Basics on Design Thinking approach in engineering Empathy mapping, Ideation and Product Development Interviewing/identify perceptions of user/people Preparation of PD canvas Summarization and Pre-Design Learnings Need Matrix (LNM) Prior Art search Dirty Mock ups (Rough Prototype) Mentors 1. Prof. Bhasker Vijaykumar Bhatt; Assistant Professor, Civil Engineering Department, Sarvajanik College of Engg. & Tech., Surat 2. Prof. Mayur Sevak; Assistant Professor, Electronics & Communication Department, Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya Engineering College, V.V.Nagar WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION Faculties and forum were welcomed and introduced in the session with importance and purpose of the seminar by Prof. Kavita R. Jain. Dr. Shefali Singhal, Principal welcomed all and briefed on activities at Madhuben & Bhanubhai Patel Women Institute of Engineering for Studies & Research in Computer & Communication Technology and Charutar Vidya Mandal and also motivated to organizing committee of Design Engineering for the initiative through seminar. Prof. Bhasker V. Bhatt as subject expert faculty explained on the key point in detail and Prof. Mayur Sevak discussed on prior art and patent search activity incorporating in the DE-1B phases.
SESSION I: In the first session, Prof. Bhasker Bhatt discussed on the Syllabus and Guidelines for 4 th semester to all faculties and also explained to faculties how to carry out 3 rd semester by student that can help them in progressing effectively to 4 th semester. Discussions were around design thinking concept with different examples and reasons thereof. He discussed on convention, refinement and exploration. Discussions were held about interviewing and identifies perceptions of user, summarize on observation framework responses and work out details and pre-design of product development canvas (PDC). He emphasized to practice with thinking iterations if it is not difficult situation/ problem anticipated that can be further verified by field activities. SESSION II: Beginning with the idea of Design, Prof. Bhasker Bhatt discussed idea evaluation with the proof of concept. He also discussed on AEIOU framework means ACTIVITIES, ENVIRONMENTS, INTRATIONS, OBJECTS, and USERS for brief over view of Design Engineering.
SESSION III and IV: In this session, Prof. Mayur Sevak discussed how to prepare the Product Development Canvas (PDC), ideation and if canvas must be clear so that faculties have gone through ideation canvases which include activities, people, situation, and props. Finally from many problems faculties can rectify it technically branch related problems that would be product development canvas which include problem definition, product function, feature, tools. He also discussed on literature search and patent search activity including Google, US, European, Japan patterns. He also demonstrated on searching of patents. He also discussed for the preparation of prototype and it also included all the feature of finalized product. He told that product may be working or non working but it should include all the aspect of final product. ATTENDANCE A total of 39 Faculty attended the event. Attendance through faculties sign in pre-lunch and post-lunch sessions was recorded. Dignitaries on the Dais
