San Ignacio-Santa Elena Municipal Profile General San Ignacio-Santa Elena is an inland municipality, comprising of the twin towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena. The twin towns are linked by the historic Hawksworthe bridge spanning the Macal River. San Ignacio- Santa Elena is one of three municipalities in the Cayo District. It is located approximately 9 miles from the western border with Guatemala. Population Between and, San Ignacio-Santa Elena experienced average annual population growth of nearly 3.5%, above the 3% average annual urban population growth for the intercensal period. At the population census count, the population was estimated to be around 17,900 persons. It is now the second most-populated municipality in Belize, after outgrowing Orange Walk Town between and. The average household size declined in the intercensal period from 4.4 persons per household in to 4.1 persons per household in. Demographics San Ignacio-Santa Elena is predominantly a Mestizo community. Mestizos are by far the major ethnic group, comprising 71% of the population in and declining slightly to 68% in. English is the most spoken language, with nearly 69% of the population speaking English. However, Spanish is also spoken by 64% of the population, indicating that the majority of the population is bilingual (Spanish, English). Creole is also spoken by nearly 57% of the population. The male-to-female ratio remained fairly constant between the intercensal period, at around 96 males per 100 females in, indicating that females continue to outnumber males in the population. The Age-Dependency ratio declined significantly from 82 dependents per 100 adults in to 65 dependents per 100 adults in. This is as mainly as a result of the higher growth rate among the adult population which outpaced the growth among the children and senior populations between the intercensal period. The foreign-born population remained fairly constant between the intercensal period, at around 17% of the population in. The foreign-born population in San Ignacio-Santa Elena have traditionally been from Central America and North America; however within the intercensal period, there has been increased immigration from China. Access to Public Utilities (Water, Sanitation, Electricity) The major source of drinking water for households in San Ignacio-Santa Elena has shifted from piped water in to bottled water in. Piped water was the main source of drinking water for nearly 89% of
households in, but declined to nearly 42% of households by. Bottled water has become the main source of drinking water for over 52% of households in. Flush toilet piped to septic tank is the main type of toilet facility for most households in San Ignacio-Santa Elena. The proportion of households using flush toilets increased from over 59% in to 74% in. Meanwhile, households using traditional pit latrines have declined from 40% in to 25% in. San Ignacio-Santa Elena is among the six municipalities in the country without an established sewer system for waste water disposal and treatment. The vast majority of households in San Ignacio-Santa Elena use electricity as the main power source for lighting. The proportion of households with electricity has increased from 89% in to 94% in. Education Currently there are 8 Primary schools, 3 High schools, and 1 sixth form established in San Ignacio-Santa Elena. The Net Enrolment rate in primary school increased from 94% in 2004 to 96% in. The ratio of boys to girls enrolled in Primary school remained constant at 114 boys per 100 girls in both and, indicating that more boys than girls continued to be enrolled in Primary school. The Gross Enrolment rate in secondary school increased for both boys and girls, from 58% in to 67% in for boys, and from 69% in to 81% in for girls. The ratio of boys to girls enrolled in secondary school decreased from 100 boys per 100 girls in to 76 boys per 100 girls by, indicating that more girls than boys are now enrolled in secondary school. The Youth Literacy rate (15 to 24 years) indicate similar levels of literacy for males and females at 88% in, increasing to around 95% in. Technical and Vocational training also experienced a tremendous growth as the number of trainees increased by nearly 300% between and.
