SERRA CATHOLIC SCHOOL Letter from Athletic Directors Dear Athletes, At Serra Catholic School, athletics are an important part of the total educational process. Athletes are expected to develop athletic skills, respect their teammates, respect the rules, their coaches and officials, and exhibit good sportsmanship at all times. You are representing Serra Catholic School, yourself, and your family. All Serra Catholic students must conduct themselves appropriately at all times so as to maintain self-respect and the esteem of those who are watching. We, at Serra Catholic School, take pride in our school teams and respect our teams as they represent us with pride by displaying their hard work, athletic skills, fair play, and hospitality of visiting schools. Remember to work hard, do the best you are able to do, and always remember to win gratefully and lose graciously. Go Bears! SERRA CATHOLIC SCHOOL After School Sports Philosophy I. Philosophy of Athletics The Serra Catholic School approach to athletics stems directly from the school s philosophy of education. We believe our athletic program should aid in the spiritual, social, and proper physical development of the student athlete. A. Goals 1. To share our faith with whom we come in contact. 2. To require our athletes to strive to live like Christ. 3. To have our athletes possess positive character qualities and to express them openly through the medium of athletics. 4. To provide young athletes with a chance to enjoy, develop and compete in athletics. B. Objectives 1. To develop an understanding of priorities; God first, family second, academics third, athletics and social activities forth. 2. To demonstrate strong Christian character during normal and stressful situations. A coach or athlete should always be in control, or quick to correct his/her mistakes. 3. To foster a desire in the athlete to manage their academics and behavior in such a manner as to gain the privilege of participation in the school-sponsored sports program. 4. To help the student-athlete learn to handle relationships with their peers and those in authority over them. II. Philosophy of Athletic participation at Serra Catholic School 1. All students have the opportunity to try out for an athletic team. However, based on the large number students trying out, facility limitations and league regulations, some teams will need to make cuts. 2. The Co-Athletic Director with assistance from the team coach will determine selection of team members. This decision will be based on their eligibility to play after school sports, practice attendance, work ethic, attitude, and skill level in that particular sport. Student eligibility is based on academic record and conduct record and is determined by the administration and teachers. 3. The ultimate goal is to allow each team member to play in every game. Please see the Level of Play section for details regarding each level. SERRA CATHOLIC SCHOOL After School Sports Introduction Serra Catholic School offers competitive sports for both boys and girls in middle school, including: flag football, volleyball, basketball, lacrosse, softball, coed soccer, and track and field (grades 1-8). The athletic program falls under the jurisdiction of the School, and is administered by the Student Activities Director and the Athletic Directors. The Serra Catholic School athletic program is governed under the Parochial Athletic League (PAL) and adheres to their guidelines. A fee is charged per student, per sport to assist in covering the costs of the athletic program. Participating in the Serra Catholic School athletic program is a privilege, not a right. Students earn the 4

privilege of participating through hard work, dedication, desire, and self-discipline. The school, in cooperation with the students and parents, will make a reasonable effort to hold participating students to personal, academic, and discipline standards. Students, athletes, spectators, coaches, and instructors represent the school, and they are expected to be worthy representatives. Students may not try out for a sport if they are on academic probation. In addition, participation requires a commitment by the student to attend all practices and games with the exception of an excused absence (funeral, illness, etc. Parents must call/email the Athletic Director in the event a student is ill and will miss a practice. Students participating in Serra Catholic s Sports Program will assume the responsibility of getting and completing all academic assignments when dismissed early for a scheduled game. The following policies are established to assure that the athletic program supports the physical and academic emphasis as stated in the PAL Handbook. 1. Student Athletes who have an overall academic average below a 70% at the mid-trimester or at the end of any trimester will be placed on After School Sports Probation for a period of six weeks. During the probationary period, the student will be expected to improve his/her academic performance as detailed in the probation meeting minutes and probation contract. Terms of the After School Sports Probation will be determined by the administration. A conference to discuss these terms will be held with the administration, teachers, parents and student.(students with and ILP must maintain the academic work agreement that is made with the teacher.) 2. Students who have an overall average below a 70% in either Work Habits or Responsible Behavior at the mid-trimester or at the end of any trimester will be placed on After School Sports Probation for a period of six weeks. During the probationary period, the student will be expected to improve his/her behavior and or work habits as detailed in the probation meeting minutes and probation contract. Terms of the probation will be determined by the administration. A conference to discuss these terms will be held with the administration, teachers, parents and student. 3. The administration reserves the right to remove an athlete from a team either temporarily or permanently if, in the opinions of the administration, the athlete demonstrates poor behavior or citizenship during the school day or at athletic events or if the athlete does not meet the academic and conduct requirements as stated. 4. A student will not be dismissed from an after-school detention in order to make a prescheduled contest or practice. 6

5. For a student athlete to be eligible to participate in that day s athletic contest they must have attended class for ½ a day. 6. A current registration packet, including an emergency form, sports permission form, uniform contract, and signed code of conduct must be on file with Athletic Director before a student can attend scheduled contests, games, tournaments, and meets. The athletic department emphasizes the importance of developing a winning attitude in its student athletes. With this in mind, all athletes and coaches associated with the Serra Catholic Athletic Program pledge to treat teachers, administrators, parents, officials, opponents, spectators, and fellow coaches and athletes with respect: Serra Catholic School believes that no quality better reflects a winning attitude than that of good sportsmanship. SERRA CATHOLIC SCHOOL Team Tryouts Athletic teams will have open try-outs for each sport and cuts will be made at the discretion of the Athletic Directors in conjunction with the administration. Serra Catholic School will attempt to field two A teams (7th/8th grade) and two B teams (5th/6th grade) for all sports when participation demands and practice time and space allow. Players will be evaluated by the athletic directors and all coaches using a sport specific rubric. Player coach ability, commitment, attitude, grades and school conduct will all factor into the team selection process. Athletic Director with input from the coaches will pick the squads. Any student may be cut based on ability and special consideration will not be given to 8th graders (A Team) or 6th graders (B Team). SERRA CATHOLIC SCHOOL Selection Process for Teams 1. Students in Grades 7 and 8 are eligible to try out for A level sports teams. 2. Students in Grades 5 and 6 are eligible to try out for B level teams. 3. Parents, other than station helpers, will be prohibited from attending any tryouts. (Administrator s discretion) 4. Upon completion of tryouts, the athletic directors will prepare a tentative roster that must be approved by the appropriate Principal to determine eligibility. Only those students who are approved by the Principal may participate. 5. There will be strict compliance to the academic standards set by Serra Catholic School. 6. There will be a minimum of two people evaluating participants in the try-out process. 7. Coaches will assist in evaluating players during tryouts. 8. Students must tryout to participate on any team. 7

9. Prior participation on a team has no bearing on selection. SERRA CATHOLIC SCHOOL Team Membership 1. A student is considered to part of a team as soon as the team roster is posted. 2. Attendance Requirements: a. A team member must complete the season in its entirety, including playoffs and tournaments. b. If a player decides to quit a team, at any time, that player becomes ineligible to participate in any extra-curricular activities at Serra Catholic School for the remainder of the school year. If a player leaves a team during the spring season, he/she will be ineligible for any extra-curricular activities during the first trimester the following school year. c. In order to participate in a game, an athlete must have attended school that same day for a minimum of half a day. 3. The participation cost per athlete may vary with each sport and season. The fee covers expenses such as: a. PAL participation fee b. Referees fees per game (this cost doubles during basketball season due to two referees per game instead of one). c. Coaches stipends d. League referee-assigner fees e. Lining of fields for football and softball games f. Uniform g. Equipment 4. New students to Serra Catholic School may be added to a team during the season provided that they follow the PAL and Serra Catholic School Athletic Guidelines and are exempt from the GPA guidelines for one trimester. 5. Any parent volunteer in a coaching position is also held responsible to the same standards. Athletes, spectators (including parents and invited guests) and coaches are expected to conduct themselves with behavior consistent with Christian principles. Rude, abusive language, and conduct may result in expulsion from the sports arena as well as other discipline deemed appropriate. Any decisions of ineligibility will be in consultation with the Athletic Director and Principal and will be final. SERRA CATHOLIC SCHOOL General Rules In accordance with the Parochial Athletic League Practices may be canceled because of rain, but all efforts are made to keep practices and games as scheduled. If practices or games are canceled, it will be done before 1:00 p.m. that day. 1. Athletes are to be at all practices unless excused by the coach prior to practice. 9

2. If an athlete misses a practice without permission or an excused absence, the coach may follow through with the appropriate consequences (ex: loss of playing time). The athletes must notify the coach of any absence. 3. Should an athlete need some extra time for schoolwork, or other school related activity, an arrangement can be worked out. This arrangement must be between the parent, the coach and the athlete. 4. Athletes must be in school at least ½ day in order to participate in practice or a game. 5. Athletes that have a doctor or parent note excusing them from their Physical Education class, or other physical activities, may not participate in practices, games, etc. during the time stated on the note. 6. The athletic department is not responsible for providing an additional uniform if an athlete forgets to bring his/her uniform to school on game day. SERRA CATHOLIC SCHOOL Game Schedules 1. A printed game schedule will be given to each coach. 2. Coaches will distribute practice and game schedules to parents and team members. Schedules will also be posted on the After School Sports Webpage. Always disregard previous schedule when a new one is distributed. 3. Parents are responsible for arranging for transportation for their child after each contest, home or away. SERRA CATHOLIC SCHOOL Coach Requirements General Statement of Responsibility: The head coach of each sport has the responsibility of carrying on the sport in the best interest of Serra Catholic School by adhering to the Policies and Regulations as outlined in Serra Catholic s After School Sports Program handbook, as well as the PAL handbook. SERRA CATHOLIC SCHOOL After School Sports Communication Policies In accordance with the Parochial Athletic League Communication with athletes, parents, administration, Athletic Director, and coaches is vital to the success of all athletic programs. During the course of the season, concerns arise. The following communication process should follow these steps: A. Athlete arranges meeting with coach B. Parent arranges meeting with coach C. Parent arranges meeting with Athletic Director D. Parent arranges meeting with Athletic Director and Principal Communications that parents and players should expect from the coach: A. Philosophy of the coach B. Expectations of the team C. Locations and times of all practices and games D. Procedure to follow should a player become injured during a practice or game Communications coaches expect from parents and players: A. Notification of any schedule conflict, as far in advance as possible B. Specific concerns regarding coach s philosophy and experience 11

Participating in youth sports can be one of the most rewarding experiences in a child s life. It is important to understand that there also may be times when things do not go the way you wish. At these times, discussion with the coach may be desirable, to clear up the issue, and to avoid any misunderstanding. It is advised that any concerns be brought up in private, away from a game or practice situation. SERRA CATHOLIC SCHOOL After School Sports Transportation The team parent or a designated adult can assign carpools for away games. Please follow the outlined procedure below: 3:30 Away Games: Student athletes will be dismissed from class at 2:10. Student athletes will meet a Serra Faculty/Staff Member in the Father Serra Courtyard out by the locker rooms by 2:20. From there, a Serra Faculty/Staff Member will check-in student athletes from 2:15-2:20. Parents driving carpools can park in a parking spot and meet in the Father Serra Courtyard out by the locker rooms, as well. From there, they can check in their carpool, and once everyone in their carpool is accounted for, they can walk them out to the parking lot. Siblings of athletes are encouraged to stay the duration of school and carpool home or to the game with friends. If parents driving must take athletes and athlete s siblings, siblings will follow the same procedures as athletes. A Serra Faculty/Staff Member will check in athletes and siblings before they leave. Parents driving carpools must have driver s insurance documents on file with Serra s After School Sports Program. Parents can enter campus via the Antonio entrance before 2:15. After 2:15, drivers will be stopped by Security. Please feel free to park in an open parking spot. Parent carpools will meet their carpool in the Father Serra Courtyard out by the locker rooms, where a Serra Faculty/Staff Member will check them in and off, then release the carpool to leave, hopefully all before 2:35. The goal is to have all carpools underway before traffic begins at 2:40. 4:30 Away Games (Team Mom's do not have to assign carpools for 4:30 away Games): Student athletes will be dismissed at the regular scheduled bell time; approximately 2:40. Student athletes will meet carpools/rides through the regular carpool pick up. Student athletes do not need to check out with a Serra Faculty/Staff Member unless they are carpooling with a 3:30 Game carpool. If a student athlete s carpool arrives past 3:15, the student athlete will be checked into extended day care until the carpool arrives. Parents driving carpools can enter campus via the Banderas entrance to pick up athletes. 3:30 Home Games Student athletes will be dismissed at the regular scheduled bell time; approximately 2:40. Student athletes will meet their coach at a designated area. Student athletes will help set up chairs for home 12

team, away team, and spectators. Student athletes may begin warm-up upon coach s arrival. Until then, all equipment is kept in safe keeping. Parents can enter campus via the Antonio entrance and park in any open parking spot after 3:15 or before 2:40. 4:30 Home Games Student athletes will be dismissed at the regular scheduled bell time; approximately 2:40. Student athletes may NOT hang out until game time. There are two options: 1) A student athlete can be picked up through regular traffic patterns via the Banderas entrance 2) A student athlete can check into Extended Day Care until 4:00PM. If a student athlete is not under the supervision of their parent or coach anytime before 4:00, the athlete will be automatically checked into Extended Day Care. Parents can enter campus via the Antonio entrance and park in any open parking spot. SERRA CATHOLIC SCHOOL After School Sports Uniforms and Equipment Athletic uniforms and equipment must be used ONLY at scheduled practices and games. Uniforms may be worn to school only on game days. On formal dress days athletes must wear formal dress to school and bring their team uniform to change into before the game. The athlete is responsible for all equipment issued to him/her and must return all of it at the coach s request. The following is taken directly from the Discipline Policies and Procedures Handbook: Athletic Uniform Policy Student athletes participating in the current sport season may wear an approved team shirt or jersey and approved shorts on game days only. (All approvals for game day wear will be made by the Athletic Director) Any athletic team wear is not an acceptable substitute for the PE uniform unless you have a game on that day Shirts may not be tied in any way Shorts may not be rolled up Formal uniforms must be worn on Formal Uniform Days regardless of scheduled athletic games No jewelry, barrettes, beads, or bandanas may be worn while playing.
