SMUMN.edu Art & Design Department

The Department Graphic and Intermedia Design Major The Art and Design Department When was the last time you were really creative? Perhaps with a box of crayons? The Art and Design Department at SMUMN.edu will reawaken that creative spark! The Art and Design Department gives you the opportunity to develop both hands-on skills of traditional studio art with the proficiency of digital and intermedia design. Having both majors housed in one department ensures that you will have a deep understanding how art, made on the easel or printing press, informs and is informed by the computer screen. Graphic & Intermedia Design Major The Graphic & Intermedia Design major prepares you for a range of opportunities and careers in design. Designing for both printed material and newer digital and web-based formats is emphasized. State of the art computer studios with up to the minute software ensures that you will be well equipped for an ever-changing industry. Motion Design This course utilizes sound, time, and motion for creation of a visual expression relating to the field of graphic design. Students will explore current modes of moving image creation such as stop motion animation and kinetic typography for film. Students will work in studio on projects exploring technologies in current practice (digital video and computer generated motion graphics). Students will also learn the history of moving graphics in advertising, entertainment, and other cultural forms. Photo Processes The opportunities in the photography area encompass a wide range of imaging processes, from traditional black and white wet darkroom techniques to digital photography using DSLRs with digital photo manipulation and editing. Students have access to a dark room, a film processing lab, a fully equipped Mac based computer lab, and a lighting studio. Web Design Web Design courses delve into the numerous facets of online design; from working in teams with computer science students creating mobile sites and apps to a culminating independent project building a complete website from the ground up. You will learn a wide range of tools, including site planning, wireframing, online design best practices, HTML and CSS, Dreamweaver, Flash, Javascript and JQuery, and SEO. Graphic Design Graphic Design courses will immerse you in the complex mix of technology and design theory with sequential and real-world assignments. Projects include branding, brochures, print media, and logos, as well as the software used to create them.

Studio Art Major Studio Art Major The Studio Art major offers you the opportunity to explore media and develop skills in a range of areas. Working with faculty, who are all practicing artists, alongside other students in a studio setting, you will gain technical skills, participate in constructive critiques, and work on finding your own artistic voice. As you advance you will focus on individual interests and projects culminating in your senior capstone exhibit. Senior seminar will prepare you to navigate the multi-faceted opportunities in visual art. Our painting studio is a converted gym. So there s lots of room to work. Painting Painting brings design, drawing, color theory, and composition skills into a holistic and personal art statement. Working primarily with acrylic, you will explore a range of styles, from traditional Renaissance space to contemporary approaches to painting as you begin to formulate your voice through pigment and brush. Printmaking In printmaking you will experiment with a variety of graphic media such as lithography, woodcuts, linocuts. calligraphy, silkscreen and intaglio. Different media are offered each time the course is offered. Drawing Three levels of drawing courses are available as part of the Studio Art Major. You will move through mainly representational drawings with a focus on the still life and observation in Drawing I, to media explorations and abstraction in Drawing II, to a focus on life drawing in Drawing III. Sculpture The sculpture area offers you the opportunity to work in mixed media, wood shop, metals and welding, carving, assemblage, clay, mold making, and/or casting. You will work on a range of projects from life modeling to conceptual sculpture while participating in guided skill building in this range of materials. Ceramics In Ceramics, you will explore a range of methods of working in clay, including slab, coil, and throwing on the potter s wheel. While learning about clay, glazes, and firings, you will gain knowledge about the work of historical and contemporary ceramic artists. The studio offers a slab roller, extruder, gas and electric kilns, a clay mixer, and ample working and storage spaces.
