About the University Jamia Hamdard (JH) was declared as a deemed-to-be University in 1989 by the HRD Ministry on the recommendation of University Grants Commission (UGC) under the UGC Act 1956 in recognition of the services provided by erstwhile educational institutes established by HNF, the Hamdard National Foundation. These institutes built over a period of time included the Hamdard College of Pharmacy, Hamdard Tibbi College, Rufaida College of Nursing, the Institute of History of Medicine & Medical Research, and Indian Institute of Islamic Studies. The University was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister of India, Shri Rajiv Gandhi on August 1, 1989, who in his inspiring inaugural address applauded the efforts of Hakeem Abdul Hameed sb, the Founder, for setting up a number of institutions of learning which finally emerged in the form of Jamia Hamdard to, in the words of Shri Rajiv Gandhi, enable minority (the Muslim) to go forward and help them to march forward. Spread over a sprawling green campus of about 100 acres, located on a prime piece of land in South Delhi, JH has eight faculties including a medical college, two hospitals a 350 bedded allopathic and another a Unani hospital on its campus. It has a huge library building, archive centre, separate hostels for girls and boys, gymnasium, a large playgruound, residential quarters for the staff, and also an off campus in Kannur, Kerala. The University has been maintaining a steady progress in all facets in its existence of over 25 years and is both nationally and internationally recognized for the quality of its students and research. The overall progress in this period has been excellent in terms of infrastructure and maintaining standard in higher education which is evident from the placement record of the University, high quality research, and publications and patents. The University is committed to excellence in tertiary education.
The Founder (14 th Sept. 1908 - July 22, 1999) The Founder-Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard, Hakeem Abdul Hameed, a renowned physician of the Unani syetem of medicine who served the poorest of the poors and also had digniteries such as Prince Charles of England as his patient, was a philanthropist who always had public service as his driving force. Hkm Abdul Hameed set up a complex of educational institutions over a period of time which finally got amalgamated in Jamia Hamdard in 1989. The first institute that was built on the piece of land in Tughlaqabad which today houses the Faculty of Science was the Institute of History of Medicine and Medical Research. The foundation stone of this institute was laid down on November 15, 1962 by the then Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru; the building was inaugurated by Mrs. Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister of India in 70s. The Great Hakeem also set up several other institutes which include the Hamdard National Foundation, Hamdard Education Society, Hamdard Study Circle, Hamdard Public School, Ghalib Academy, the Centre for South Asian Studies, and Business & Employment Bureau. Hkm Abdul Hameed was conferred the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan by the Government of India, awarded the Avicenna Award by the erstwhile USSR in 1983, and was nominated as honorary member of the Academy of Medical Science, Iran. He served as Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University. In October 2000, the Research Centre for Islamic History, Art and Culture (IRCICA) Istanbul, Turkey, presented IRCICA Award to him posthumously for Patronage in Preservation of Cultural Heritage and Promotion of Scholarship. Hkm Abdul Hameed was a true follower of Islam in letter and spirit and strongly believed in And spend in the cause of Allah and do good, for He loves those who do good for others Al Quran, 2:196.
Chancellor The Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard, Mr. Habil Khorakiwala, is a well known figure in the business world. He is the of Wockhardt Group and the President of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), the premier Industry Association of India. He has been the National Council member of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). He also served as the President of Indian Pharmaceutical Alliance, which is an industry association of top 12 Indian Pharmaceutical companies. Mr. Habil Khorakiwala holds a Masters Degree in Pharmaceutical Science from the Purdue University, USA and is an alumnus of the Harvard Business School. Mr. Khorakiwala has been nominated by the Government of India in various capacities in Government bodies. He has been a member of the National Managing committee of Indian Red Cross Society, and also a member of the Advisory Board of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, CSIR. He is an active member of the National Manufacturing Competitive Council and of NIPER, the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education & Research, set up by the Government of India. Mr. Khorakiwala has received many prestigious awards such as The Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for 2004 in the 'Healthcare and Life Sciences' category and the Giants International Award 2003 for Business and Industry for his contribution to Indian business and industry.
Vice Chancellor Dr. G.N.Qazi, the Founder-Director of IIIM Jammu, CSIR, joined Jamia Hamdard as Vice Chancellor on 13 th October 2008. Dr. Qazi, after obtaining his Master s and PhD degrees in Biochemistry and Microbiology from MS University, Baroda, did his post doctoral training in the University of Dortmund (Germany). In his career of about four decades, he has more the 250 international publications and 70 patents to his credit in the areas of Biochemistry, Microbial Biotechnology and bioprospecting of natural products, as well as clinical validation of Indian classical drugs. Dr. Qazi, in his more than 30 years of leadership position, has groomed several scientists and technocrats in the area of his core competence. He has guided 35 scholars leading to PhDs from 12 Universities in India and Germany. He has led several International Collaborations and steered one of the five Regional Research Laboratories of CSIR as a Senior-Director for more than 8 years. Dr. Qazi is holding ship of several Committees/Commissions including the of Drugs and Pharmaceutical Research Programme (DPRP) of the Government of India, Unani Pharmacopeia Committee and Pharmacopeia Commission for AYUSH Drugs. He also serves as of peer teams of NAAC for accrediting the Universities all over India. As Vice Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard, his immediate focus has been the total quality improvement in education and research which, as a result, has led to reaccreditation of the University in A grade by NAAC. It was under his able leadership that Prof. Tandon committee, constituted by Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India placed the University in A category. In 2012, he obtained the permission of MCI to open a Medical School, the Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (HIMSR) at JH. Dr. Qazi has implemented a number of schemes to bring in qualitative change at all levels in the University. Education with Perfection is what that has always been his motto.
