Foreword This list of learning resources identifies high-quality resources that have been recommended by the Ministry of Education to support the curriculum, Career Education 8. This list will be updated as new resources are recommended and older ones are no longer available. A list of additional learning resources can be found on the the Ministry of Education website. (CAN) indicates that a Canadian contributed to the development of the resource and/or that it includes Canadian content. (SK) indicates that a Saskatchewan person contributed to the development of the resource and/or that it includes Saskatchewan content. Other resources beyond those recommended in this list may effectively support the curriculum, Career Education 8. It remains the responsibility of educators to preview and select materials that best meet the needs of their school or community. Educators should choose resources in accordance with their school division s learning resources selection policy. Ready for Work: The Middle Years, Building Work-Readiness Skills (CORE, SK) The preparation for the world of work that this resource offers Middle Level students provides a link with the Ready for Work framework that supports Secondary Level curricula. Built to reflect the competencies outlined in Blueprint for Life/Work Designs, this resource is divided into three major areas: Identifying My Skills, Understanding the World of Work, and Knowing Ourselves and Others. Separate lessons for Grades 6-7 students and Grades 8-9 students are included for each area. The lessons are not sequential, and all lessons do not need to be taught. The Real Game-Saskatchewan Authors: National Life/Work Centre, Junior Achievement Saskatchewan, Greater Saskatoon Catholic School Division, and Saskatchewan Rivers School Division (CORE, SK) Developed and piloted by Greater Saskatoon Catholic School Division and Saskatchewan Rivers School Division in collaboration with the National Life/Work Centre and Junior Achievement Saskatchewan, this is the Saskatchewan version of the wellknown role-playing game from The Real Game Series. This resource offers students the opportunity to explore career and life management skills while preparing them to take advantage of career opportunities that are available in our province. All provincially funded schools with Grade 7 and 8 students enroled have been provided with access to the two-year site licence for The Real Game-Saskatchewan. See Your Choices, Choose Your Path (CORE, SK) Put together by the Aboriginal Representative Workforce Council, this kit contains a wealth of career development information of interest to students. In addition to the inclusion of resources such as the Blueprint for Life/Work Designs, there are pamphlets and brochures from various provincial and federal agencies outlining educational opportunities, employability skills, entrepreneurship, and job search skills. The kit includes two videos entitled Opportunity, Triumph, and Challenge and Math and Science Equals Opportunity: A Formula for Our Future. It also includes a CD entitled Strength of Spirit: Three Years Later and a facilitator s guide to accompany the CD. The main component of the kit is the teacher facilitator s guide that provides lesson ideas related to several role model posters included with the kit. The activities could be adapted to support renewed curricula. Copies of this kit were distributed to band and community schools. The kit is not available for purchase, but schools may borrow a copy from the distributor. An online version of the kit is available at www.parwc.usask.ca/projects/. Digital Resources The Saskatchewan Ministry of Education provides a forum through the Evergreen Curriculum Learning Resources page for teachers to access and share educationally appropriate Internet sites. The URL Database of websites can be found on the Ministry of Education website at www. education.gov.sk.ca. Information on sites that are recommended and linked to curriculum outcomes can be found by accessing this database. Teachers are encouraged to share Internet sites with others in the province by registering in the URL database. Once an account is created, teachers are able to suggest new Internet sites as well as access and review sites submitted by other teachers. The reviews are used to decide upon a recommendation and links to curricula. Educators can register online on the Ministry of Education website. The General Reference Centre (GRC) provides access to general Internet sites that relate to curricula. The GRC can be found on the Ministry of Education s website. Examples of currently available Internet sites that provide valuable information for career education teachers follow: Employability Skills at www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/career/employab.html (CORE, CAN) In four parts, this website provides excellent support for students who are focusing on career development. The Career Quizzes section offers a self-assessment quiz and links to valuable sites relating to workplace skills and traits. The Profiles section features personal interviews with Canadians from a variety of occupations. The Employability Skills 2000 section divides important workplace skills into Academic Skills, Personal Management Skills, and Teamwork Skills. The Career Advice section offers career services from monster.ca. Literacy and Essential Skills Toolkit at www.hrsdc.gc.ca/eng/workplaceskills/essential_skills/ general/toolkit.shtml (CORE, CAN) Divided into three sections, this newly revised toolkit is comprised of user friendly tools that can help students to improve their employability skills. The Assessment section provides assessment/self-assessment tools in the areas of oral communication, computer use, writing, reading, document use, numeracy, continuous learning, and working with others. The Learning section includes tip sheets and exercises to help students improve their literacy and essential skills. The Training Supports section offers valuable information on mentoring, job enhancement, and developing partnerships to support literacy and essential skills.
