FORUM From Sue Hargadon AM delighted to report another super I summer with some excellent results at both GCSE and A level. We were also delighted with the success of our students at AS level. The national papers once again listed us as a highly performing school. EXAM RESULT SPECIAL The A Level results celebration of success was repeated a week later with the arrival of the GCSE results Our A level results were very strong and enhanced our position as one of the most consistently high performing schools in the county. 9% of grades were at grade A* and 76% of the grades were at A,B or C. 27% of students achieved at least two A/A* grades - a superb achievement. There were many superb individual performances. Owen Smith, Tamsin Harvey, Henry Rose and Louisa Sergeant achieved at least four A* grades and Sam Nunn, Grace Marwick, Zach Bond, Sam Hutt, Christina Aresti and Seb Bechmann all achieved at least three A* grades. As well as those gaining very high grades, we were equally pleased with the excellent performances from less able students who, whilst maybe not getting A and A* grades, exceeded their target grades and achieved the excellent individual results needed to secure Higher Education places. Almost all students were accepted by their first or second choice institution, although once again it was an emotional few days for some as they waited for confirmation of that place! Huge congratulations are due to all students for doing so well. A list of results and Higher Education destinations for all our Sixth Form students is shown on pages 4-8. We are proud that this year three students have places at Oxford and Cambridge, and we have five students reading Medicine or Veterinary Science. An amazing 27% of students achieved at least two A/A* grades at A level. The celebration of success was repeated a week later with the arrival of the GCSE results. I know that all parents of Year 11 students would agree that a great deal of effort had been put in by both the students and staff in preparing for the examinations. 72% of students achieved five A* - C grades and 60% achieved 5A* - C including English and Maths. 2

EXAM RESULT SPECIAL We were utterly frustrated by the unexpected, erratic and unfair drop in English Language, which affected AQA exam board schools more than others. It left 36 students on a D who would have got C in January or last June. I still hope that there will be a review and upgrading to put this right. Without the drop we would have achieved our best 5A*-C including English and Maths ever. As it was, it was 60% - a FORUM We were very pleased that the boys achieved their highest ever grades relatively small drop of 3% compared to many schools. We were very pleased with performances at the top end, with 27% of grades at A/ A*. There were many superb individual performances, with 23 students achieving at least 10 A* and A grades. We were very pleased with a Maths result of 75% A*-C and 12 out of our top 20 students were boys. It was equally pleasing to see many less able students, who had worked incredibly hard, to secure the grades needed for post-16 courses. We were pleased with the results for Otley College students, where about 15 of our students have attended one day a week, following Animal Care, Construction or Vehicle Maintenance courses. The Year 12s taking AS exams appear to have done well and successfully handled the enormous pressure put on them to spend yet another summer taking exams. We don t put the results of these in this Forum as many of the students will take them on to A2 and most retake papers. At the school we work incredibly hard to support our exam students and it s great to see all their hard work pay off. This year we ran monitoring and mentoring schemes in both Year 12 and Year 13, as well as one-year focused achievement groups. 240 students participated in the six study residentials that we ran. In addition, we held revision days, special classes and exam revision clubs for Years 10, 11, 12 and 13. Many of these were held in the holidays, at weekends and until late in the evening and I m really grateful to all the staff for giving up so much time to help our students. We paid for one to one tuition for borderline students in English and Maths. There were breakfast sessions on the morning of exams and also a lot of one-to-one teaching, cajoling and encouraging in all four exam year groups! I d also like to thank all our parents for all they did to support all our students. We wish all our students well with their studies as they progress to their next level. 3

FORUM A Level Results An excellent year with a pass rate of 99% 52% of grades were at A*/A and B level. We were delighted that 9% of our grades were A*, this was above the national average. 27% of students achieved at least two A*/A grades. We had an average point score of 935. Our average exam point score per entry was also very good at 218. Special congratulations to Tamsin Harvey, Owen Smith, Henry Rose and Louise Sergeant who achieved four A* grades; to Sam Nunn, Grace Marwick, Zach Bond, Sam Hutt, Christina Aresti and Seb Bechmann who achieved three A*. Three students have taken up places at Oxford and Cambridge; four students are reading Medicine and one is reading Veterinary Science. A list of the top A level performances can be found below, small letters refer to AS grades. Following the request of some students, we have just listed those who have got at least ABB though I think all students should be very proud of their achievements!
