The Mississippi Association of Partners in Education For more than 40 years, Gov. William Winter and the late Jack Reed, Sr., were driving forces on behalf of public education in Mississippi. Through the years, they united in a bipartisan front to promote the need for quality education and consistent, adequate funding of our public education system. In their honor, the Mississippi Association of Partners in Education in 2007 established a perpetual award in their names to be presented annually to promote the ideals and partnership exemplified by their lifelong commitment to education. Since 1984 the Mississippi Association of Partners in Education, a 501 (c)(3), has served as a statewide network of educators and community partners. 2016, Oleta Garrett Fitzgerald 2015, Dr. Clyde Muse 2014, Dr. Hank M. The 2017 Winter-Reed Partnership Honoree: Robert C. Khayat The former Ole Miss Chancellor Robert C. Khayat, renowned college and professional football player for whom the University s Law School is named, has forged a most memorable legacy. A 1956 graduate of Moss Point High School, Robert Khayat has lived most of his life at Ole Miss and in Oxford. With undergraduate and law degrees from Ole Miss, he joined the law faculty in 1969. A Sterling Fellowship enabled him to pursue a degree from the Yale Law School in 1980. Khayat excelled as an undergraduate history major. He was an Academic AllAmerican football player and was chosen as an All-SEC catcher for the 1959 and 1960 SEC Champion baseball teams. He is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award from the NFL, the Distinguished American Award from the National Football Foundation and the Silver Medallion Award for best memoir in the nation. Khayat is a member of the Ole Miss Football Team of the Century, the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, the Student Hall of Fame at Ole Miss, holds an honorary membership from Phi Beta Kappa and was selected as Law Alumnus of the Year in 2014. He served as chancellor of the University of Mississippi from 1995 until his retirement in 2009. His wife Margaret (BA 93) served for 14 years as the first lady of the university. The Khayat s have two children. Their daughter, Margaret, clerks for a U.S. District Judge in Grand Rapids, Mich. Their son, Robert (BA 95), is a partner in King and Spalding law firm in Atlanta.
