TexASTA American String Teacher s Association Texas Chapter Fall 15 President s Column Acronyms abound! Recently I spent time searching for professional music organizations to list in this article for the newsletter. I was hoping to find a succinct list of TMEA, TODA, ASTA, MTNA, NAME, MTNA, and others. What I found was site after site of organizations dedicated to the art, performance, training and advocacy of music in Texas. We literally have hundreds (and probably thousands) of organizations, including universities, businesses, public schools, local and state-wide arts organizations, all working to advance our cause. I also spent time looking at past winners of the TMEA Honor Orchestras in Texas. What a distinguished list of teachers and students, in districts all across Texas. From the last winners Michael Stringer and Desiree Overee to previous years winners, one begins to see how lucky we are to live in Texas! With all of the support and indeed competition for our attention in Texas Music, it makes it all the more imperative to find our niche, our raison d etre if you will. And so our board will be meeting in February at TMEA to outline and plan the next two years of activities for TEASTA. Those two years will fall under the leadership of Michael Alexander, as he assumes the President position in May. It is an exciting time to be in Texas and to lead TEXASTA into the next two years. We have a strong board and membership, but there is more we can do to gain more members, to offer more programs and services to the state and to refine our mission as we move forward. We plan to do just that! Please find in the newsletter information from Stephanie Meyers on ASTACAP, one of our premier programs, and also our solo competition from Eric Fried. There are changes in the National competition and we are keeping up with those and changes may happen for our next State competition. I thank the board for their hard work and dedication to TEXASTA. We could not have a strong chapter without them! I look forward to getting together at TMEA to chart the next two years. Please let me know if you have ideas for us to consider. I would love to hear them! Why Join TexASTA? My name is Christine Glass and I am the Secretary of TexASTA, the Texas chapter of ASTA. I have been asked to write my ideas about why it would be good for string professionals to join TexASTA. While writing this article, I have been in the middle of the start of my school year and have been endeavoring to come up with ideas that will make my classroom enriching and up-to-date with our ever-changing students and the world that is changing around them. As a member of TexASTA, access to some of the greatest string pedagogues is open to me, not only for ideas from them but also as sounding boards for my ideas. I have reached out to many of my TexASTA colleagues for help or for an ear to listen to some ideas this year and, in a collaboration of great thoughts, we are making my classroom that much more current and endearing to the students that I teach. These great minds are not only my colleagues and mentors, but they have become some of my greatest string teacher friends and advocates for our profession. Listed below are the specific benefits that you will receive by being a member of ASTA: American String Teacher Journal Every quarter, our award-winning, peer-reviewed journal keeps members informed of developments and news within the string profession. AST provides feature articles, instrument forums, and regular columns, including Master Class, Member2Member, and Teaching Tips, as well as association and industry news. Affordable Instrument Insurance ASTA members receive an impressive savings of more than 40 percent off annual minimum instrument insurance rates through Merz-Huber Co. Your membership must remain current in order to enjoy these valuable savings. Visit www.merzhuber.com or call 610-544-2323 for more information. Group Insurance Programs Through the Forrest T. Jones Co., ASTA members are eligible for a variety of insurance coverage, such as educator s liability, life, auto, health, dental, and more. Visit www.ftj.com/asta for details. Comprehensive ASTA Website The ASTA website is filled with information about every ASTA program. Whether you are looking for job openings, string industry contacts, awards, competitions, summer camps and conferences, or the latest news, you ll find it at www.astaweb.com. You will enjoy access to content reserved exclusively for members, such as articles in the AST journal archive and streamed video sessions from the ASTA National Conference. Our Texas Chapter of ASTA website address is http://www.texasta.org. String Research Journal Members enjoy online access to ASTA s newest scholarly publication, the String Research Journal. Hardcopy subscriptions are also available. Access to String-Related Job Listings String-related job opportunities are posted to the ASTA website on a continuing basis, providing members with a current list of vacancies in the profession. Competitions and Contests Members and their students are eligible to compete in ASTA competitions, such as the National Orchestra Festival, National Solo Competition, and Eclectic Strings Festival. State Chapter Membership Membership dues automatically include participation in your state chapter. State chapter membership offers many benefits, including local networking opportunities, conferences, workshops, newsletters, and more. Conferences with YOU in Mind As an ASTA member, you receive a substantial discount on national conference registration fees. Our annual conference is designed to benefit string students and professionals representing all levels and styles. Certificate Advancement Program (ASTA-CAP) The ASTA-CAP program seeks to establish definite goals and awards for students of all levels through noncompetitive examinations. Students are judged on technical and musical preparedness at specific levels (Foundation through Level 10) by an examiner of musical and pedagogical stature. A certificate of achievement is awarded for each level successfully completed. Professional Development Programs ASTA offers several professional development programs for string educators, including professional development hours and college credit for attending our national conference. So as you can see, being a part of ASTA opens up so many amazing opportunities, not only for my myself but also for my students. I get to be a part of an active organization that is looking out for my needs as a string teacher, whether I am a public or private school teacher, whether I am in a private studio or even a university professor. This organization would help me in any avenue, no matter where my string education takes me. So the question isn t why would you join ASTA. It really is, Why shouldn t you join ASTA? Creating an Inclusive Ensemble By Jennifer Nerf and Deborah Silverberg Jennifer Nerf, FOCUS Instructor, Baytown Junior School Deborah Silverberg, Baytown Junior School Choir A public school music ensemble director is accustomed to wearing many hats. Though we are often not trained to do so, understanding exceptional learners and accommodating their needs is essential to their educational experience. In addition, learning to work with exceptional learners can make us better directors to all of our students. Step 1: Understand unique needs. When you get a SpED student, the paperwork only tells part of the story. Sitting down face to face with your SpED coordinator or the instructor most responsible for that student will give you more specific information to help place the student in the appropriate ensemble and setting. Step 2: Have a plan. Do everything you can to proactively address your student s needs. Sometimes traditional seating situations will have to be set aside in favor of proximal seating. Sometimes colored overlays will need to be stored in your room for dyslexic students. Students who have issues with anxiety may need extra time at the beginning or end of class to prepare or put away. Students with certain disabilities may need special scores prepared with their part isolated or enlarged. Preparation beforehand is much easier than attempting to defuse a situation that has gone wrong. Step 3: Make your ensemble collaborative. While students will sometimes be resentful toward someone they perceive as being favored, they will often be thoughtful and supportive of someone they know needs extra help. Some Specific Disability Tips LEARNING DISABILITY- Break down learning into smaller steps; scaffold steps in a process (i.e., bullet each step, space out each step; Supply immediate regular, quality feedback; Use diagrams, graphics and pictures to augment what they say in words, use simplified wording; Provide ample independent, well-designed intensive practice; Model instructional practices that you want the students to follow; Provide extra time to respond to oral questions and for written assignments ADHD- Verbal, visual, and tactile reminders to stay on task; Give them space to move around at times, if needed; Have procedures in place to minimize distractions; Be consistent, be patient, be creative EMOTIONAL DISTURBANCE- Build a relationship, be positive, be consistent Have rules posted (simplified wording, no more than 5) Be aware of triggers Use a calm voice Don t take it personally AUTISM- Notify the student in advance about any changes; avoid having different smells in the classroom (candles, plug-ins, spraying perfume, etc.) Use a task analysis (very specific) Keep language simple and concrete, avoid using sarcasm or idioms Provide clear structure and consistent routines Teach social norms, don t assume that they already know You will experience several trial and errors before you find the best technique that will allow your students to reach their full potential. But the moment you do, that moment they shine and you get to see their success, all of the time you spent learning on what is the best way to work with that particular student will make all the effort worth it. Step 4: Know when to ask for help. There are some students who have difficulties beyond what our ensembles can handle. If you feel your safety, or the safety of your students, is at risk, for example, report your concerns immediately and look for solutions. TexAsta Fall 15 Page 4

Private Teachers Corner by Stephanie Meyers Fall into a New Routine Greetings from West Texas! I adore the excitement, renewed energy and sense of purpose in the air at the beginning of each fall semester. Unspoken dreams of energetic young musicians prepared to participate in a variety of musical activities, the sparkle of students working together to refine their craft, and a general attitude of positivity inevitably permeates the air this time of year. Now is the perfect time to reinforce the good habits of our returning students and introduce new, healthy practice routines to incoming students. As music teachers we have an important and often transformative role in the lives of our students. This has to include enforcing the significance of a well-balanced repertoire plan in the practice room, focused on consistency and variety. Often teachers feel pressure to push scales and etudes to the back burner until All-Region and All-State auditions have been completed. This can be detrimental to our students musical evolution. Instead of omitting scales and etudes, I suggest discussing with each student the merits of continuing scales and etudes, even if on a diminished level, while capturing a broader sense of the year s goals. These goals should include possible participation in the marvelous ASTA CAP exams and other competitions, as well as preparation for college entrance performance exams, etc. If our students are convinced of the rationale behind a well-balanced repertoire, our approach as teachers will lend a sense of purpose to their goals and meaning to each of the many items assigned. It will also help our students avoid the question: why am I practicing this? Instead they will learn to embrace the routine of scales and etudes that is so very important to musical growth and proficiency. unfortunate situation that we have all encountered at some point as studio teachers. If you already teach a balanced and well-constructed approach to repertoire, accept my thanks for your dedication to doing what is best for your students - even when they may not see the immediate benefit. Turning to a slightly different topic, I often come across talented students with holes in their foundation while they are excellent at some things, other items that should be part of their technical artillery are completely lacking. These items are missing simply because they have never been properly taught in lessons. A truly great teacher addresses a variety of technical concepts proactively, for example through specific etudes, even before a student encounters these concepts in the repertoire. Scales and etudes are a wonderful and accessible vehicle for addressing items such as marcato, martelé, spiccato, and vibrato. For example, while practicing scales, students can use repetition to isolate and refine spiccato and/or particular types of vibrato, as well as different bow strokes. We should keep in mind that teaching our students how to explain a particular concept themselves is equally important to their successful implementation of certain skills. I like to remember that we musicians are only as strong as our weakest link, and that Fall Housecleaning by way of improving technical capabilities and cleaning out our mechanisms should always be a part of our mission, both as teachers and as performers. Instead of turning away from murky areas (for example, a spiccato that doesn t quite work), confront these areas head on and methodically teach our students how to be strong in each aspect. Let us take the time to ask our students what they feel is in need of the most work, and then address their needs. Sometimes we are so focused on what we want to get across to our students that we may lose sight of what they wish we would address! In addition to assigning scales for lessons, it may In closing, ASTA CAP is going strong in Texas! prove fruitful to ask your students to play scales The new ASTA CAP Handbook is revised and together at the beginning of weekly studio class available. I am part of the National ASTA CAP and/or planned meetings to run scale classes on mentoring committee, and we are working toward their own. A conscientious effort to make sure our providing ASTA CAP training on a state level through students enhance their practice sessions with etudes a series of video links. ASTA CAP is a great activity (other than All-Region) and solo repertoire will most to incorporate in your private studio since it stresses definitely benefit their future musical aspirations. 2016 TexASTA Young Artists Solo Competition Preparations are underway for the next TexASTA Young Artists Solo Competition, to be held during the fall of 2016. The biennial event will be open to young musicians on violin, viola, cello, bass, guitar, and harp. The competition will be judged by a distinguished panel of adjudicators via recorded auditions. Although the Texas competition is independent of the ASTA National Solo Competition, entrants may perform repertoire identical to that required at the national level or may follow the repertoire guidelines of the TexASTA Young Artists Solo Competition (posted on the TexASTA website). Please note that many procedural changes have recently been made to the ASTA National Solo Competition. The national competition is in the process of becoming instrument category specific in alternating years. Please click the link below for details on the National Solo Competition. http://www.astaweb.com/public/competitions_festivals/national_solo_competition/public/competitions Festivals/National_Solo_Competition.aspx?Competition=1 The TexASTA Young Artists Solo Competition will remain open to all strings listed above as in previous years. Updated information on the TexASTA Young Artists Solo competition will be posted soon on the TexASTA website, http://www.texasta.org/. Questions may be addressed to Dr. Eric Fried, Chair, TexASTA Young Artist Solo Competition at eric.fried@ttu.edu TexAsta Fall 15 Page 6

Look Forward To Practice! You spend so much time practicing, you really should enjoy it. That s why Yamaha created the SV-150 Silent Practice Plus violin. It feels, plays and sounds like an acoustic violin but it s got some major advantages... The SV-150 comes with a music player/controller that can hold gigabytes of your favorite songs and performance pieces. Play along with them and listen in privacy through headphones. You can slow down any song to learn it, or speed it up for a challenge. n The SV-150 s violin tone is rich and natural. Use the 24 included digital effects to sweeten it up and create any sound you want. n Last but not least, the SV-150 packs a tuner and metronome in the controller; it s everything you need in one package. n Visit www.4wrd.it/texasta5 to learn more about the SV-150 and to find a dealer near you. Practice will never be dull again. Save your favorite MP3, WAV, AAC and MIDI files on an SD disk, put it in the controller, then play along. Adjust the tempo of songs by up to 25% without affecting pitch to practice at your own speed. 2015 Yamaha Corporation of America. All rights reserved. Shoulder rest not included.
