Th DRC supports studnts with disabilitis by coordinating rasonabl and appropriat accommodations, ducating th Univrsity community about disability issus and rights, and promoting an informd and inclusiv campus nvironmnt that activly addrsss individual and institutional barrirs. LEARNING OUTCOMES DRC studnts will idntify, through an intractiv procss with a DRC Accommodation Spcialist, individual acadmic limitations and th appropriat accommodations for studnt succss as vidncd by an accommodation lttr. Th Rhabilitation Act of 1973, prohibiting discrimination basd on disability in programs supportd by fdral agncis, gav studnts th foundation to propos that changs b mad to incras physical accss. s includd ramps, curb cuts, nw lvators, additional accssibl sating and rstrooms in athltic facilitis, and incrasd numbrs of handicap-accssibl parking spots. In 1987, Dr. Btty Nlson bcam th Purdu Univrsity Dan of Studnts. As Dan, Dr. Nlson hlpd stablish Purdu s first Disability Rsourc Cntr. In 1990, th Amricans with Disabilitis Act bcam law. Titl II of th ADA prohibits all stat and local govrnmntal ntitis, including public collgs and univrsitis, from discriminating against popl with disabilitis. Univrsitis must mak rasonabl accommodations in ordr to provid studnts with disabilitis an qual opportunity to participat in courss, programs, and activitis. This includs xtracurricular activitis. Ths accommodations includ acadmic adjustmnts or modifications such as xtndd tim for tst taking or complting cours work; substitution of spcific courss to mt dgr 3 P a g

rquirmnts; modification of tst taking or prformanc valuations. Accommodations can also tak th shap of auxiliary aids and srvics such as qualifid sign languag intrprtrs, not takrs, radrs, braill, larg print, and lctronic formats of print matrials, (-txt) and adaptiv quipmnt. Th DRC supports studnts with disabilitis by coordinating rasonabl and appropriat accommodations, ducating th Univrsity community about disability issus and rights, and promoting an informd and inclusiv campus nvironmnt that activly addrsss individual and institutional barrirs. YEARLY CYCLE & TIMELINE Studnts rqusting accommodations must idntify thmslvs to th offic and provid documntation of thir disability. Studnts may slf-idntify at any tim during th yar. Basd on documntation and information providd by studnts, a profssional judgmnt is mad to dtrmin whthr or not studnts ar ligibl to rciv acadmic adjustmnts and auxiliary aids. Studnts who ar dmd ligibl for srvics ar thn rgistrd with th DRC. Acadmic adjustmnts and auxiliary aids and srvics ar dtrmind on a cas-by-cas basis. Although tmporary staff and studnt workrs wr hird to hlp fill th gap, this is a tmporary solution, with its own drawbacks. Studnt and tmporary workrs cannot complt mor tchnical, complicatd altrnativ formats tasks such as crating tactil diagrams.
