This series of workshops will be held monthly at the Iowa State University McNay Memorial Research and Demonstration Farm near Chariton, Iowa. The farm is located at 45249 170th Ave, Chariton, IA 50049. Have you considered shopping and cooking just once on the weekend, so that you have a variety of delicious meals to serve with no hassle throughout the week? Learn how to save money and time by making up to 14 main dishes in one day and freezing them for later serving. In class you will receive the ISU Extension "Healthy Meals in a Hurry" recipe and preparation guide and discuss the "make-ahead" cooking strategies that will work for you. You will make your own healthy, money-saving mixes for cream soup casserole base, taco seasoning and more. April 2017 cover crops in the spring. This session will be led by Erika Lundy, ISU Extension Beef Program Specialist and Rebecca Vittetoe, ISU Extension Field Atgronomist. The session will start in the classroom at McNay but weather permitting the majority of the time will be spent out in the field looking at cover crops being grazed, said Vittetoe, so come dressed prepared for being in the field. Start to Farm Networking Group The Start to Farm: New Farmer Learning Network, organized by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, is a statewide program designed to provide education and support for beginning and early-career agricultural producers. Start to Farm groups meet several times throughout the year. Based on priorities and topics determined by each group they will discuss production techniques, ways to grow and improve business practices, and farm management strategies. There is no area of Ag that is off limits. This group is open to all producers of any size or type of operation! If you are interested in joining one of these groups please contact Cortney at cortneyg@iastate.edu. Want to be a Master Gardener? Registration for the upcoming Master Gardener class scheduled to begin on Tuesday, September 19th has opened! The classes are held on Tuesday evenings and run from September 19th - December 5th. This year s class will be in a new format with more hands-on learning opportunities. UPCOMING 4-H WORKSHOPS AND CAMPS Intermediate Trip to the Black Hills You have the opportunity to travel to the Black Hills in South Dakota with other intermediate 4-Hers from Dallas, Jasper, Madison, Mahaska, Marion, Polk, Poweshiek and Warren counties. Those who are currently in 7th or 8th grade are eligible to attend. The schedule includes a visit to the National Monuments, Custer State Park, Wall Drug and the Corn Palace. Taste of Camp Region 13 will be hosting Taste of Camp at the Iowa 4-H Center near Madrid, Iowa on June 14-16. Camp is designed to explore and experience camping activities and traditions in a fun and safe environment. Come and experience what camp has to offer! A 4-H membership is not required. This camp is open to those entering 4th 8th grade for the 2017/2018 school year. An official Iowa Hunter Safety Course Field Day will be provided by the DNA at camp. You must be 11 or older to complete the Iowa hunter education requirements and pass the online portion. Campers will arrive Friday, June 9th at 4 p.m. and the camp concludes Sunday, June 11th at 1 p.m. Further details and online registration can be located at http:// www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/page/ shooting-sports-activities-and-events Youth Conference Each year almost 1000 teenagers cover the campus at Iowa State University for 3 days full of speakers, workshops, mixers, dances, a banquet and community service. This event is open to those who have completed 8th grade. You don t even have to be in 4-H to attend, so be sure to invite a friend! Culinary Challenge On Saturday, April 22nd, Warren County 4-H will be hosting an exciting event to teach 4-Hers about food and also a cooking competition! The Culinary Challenge event will consist of 4-Hers as an individual or a team with up to three 4-Hers. Teams will be divided by Junior, Intermediate and Senior age levels. If you have different age levels on the team you will be in the oldest member's age category. The event will be at Carlisle High School from 8:30 am till 2:30 pm but teams will only be there for 1.5 hours depending on when their age group is scheduled. Each team will bring an appetizer to prepare on-site within a 1/2 hour time frame. Judging will follow with a learning time. You will be given 15 minutes to prep your station, start an oven, etc. at the beginning. Each team will need to provide their own supplies to make the appetizer and submit the recipe prior to the event. Pans, cooking utensil, etc. will be provided. Please sign up by Friday, April 7th by calling the Extension Office at 515-961-6327. Sign up now because space is limited to 5 teams per age level. This event is being hosted by the Intermediate 4-H Leadership Team.
