Giannini Middle School 1: Access and Equity- Make Social Justice a Reality What does this goal mean at your school? What is the school you aspire to be with respect to access, equity, and social justice? This goal means that different needs are met with varied levels of resources, depending upon student need. A class with an opportunity for everyone to take part and given access to resources for success. Equity is not equality and will not look the same for everyone. All teachers will be responsible for teaching all students with support and resources. Equity is when opportunity is made available for all students, according to need, to enable each individual to reach his or her potential, to meet the outcome of a K-12 education that will allow students to have a positive role in society. Social Justice occurs when individuals are seen, heard, and treated without (social) bias. All teachers will be responsible for teaching all students with support; Giannini students are Giannini students, not Special Ed./General Ed. It could be attributed to the 8th grade team that also sponsors ClubMed, a group of the students in those classes targeted for lunchtime test taking skills. With a small number of AA students on site-65 or so, their are only 29.5 at proficient or above in ELA and 21.3% in math. Replicating Clubmed at other grade levels may show success for both AA and Latino students. Key Implementation Dates Fall 2010 The master schedule will be designed to reflect input from department and grade level meetings to establish classroom equity (both mixed ability and behavior). Student assignment will be made based on staff input distribution of students for academic success. Teams will be formed at each grade level that distinguish them from other classes. Spring 2011

In order to increase the classroom time for all students the Violence Prevention Workgroup has used the the Cycle of Inquiry Process during the 2008-09 school year to establish strategic actions. The actions include Tribes and Restorative Circles to be implemented in 20010-11 Implement the school-wide specific and consistent consequences for tardies and cuts with clear reciprocal communication among staff. Counseling staff will do a Cycle of Inqury regarding who is out of class and why and appropriate interventions will be implemented. 2: Achievement- Engage High Achieving and Joyful Learners What does this goal mean at your school? What is the school you aspire to be with respect to high achieving and joyful learning? Students are excited about the learning process, "a light bulb goes off" when they make the connections between the subject material and their own personal experience. Learning is social. Learning itself is a lifelong process. This value is passed on to the students.each teacher strives to have each student feel a sense of belonging and to feel confident and comfortable in his or her learning. Students contributions in the class are valued by teachers and peers.humor used in the classroom and community building as part of the classroom. make joyful learning. When students have choices as to how they will learn, they will be more joyful. In the Library fostering students excitement for discovery, engagement, and learning, the joy of individual investigation, and the pride in expressing what they have learned in a variety of forms, i.e. oral, written, project. online, visual, audio. AVID Program, ClubMed/Math Scholars lunchtime tutoring for targeted students; 8th grade heterogeneous team, variety of instructional strategies, project-based learning, science lab for technology, Safe Passages, GREAT Program, Chinese and Spanish language programs, strategic reading classes, Student Council, Ecology Officers, TA's, community programs such as Beach Cleanup, Thanksgiving Box Drive, Beacon, San Francisco Team, Sunset Youth Services, P.E. Clubs such as Seven Lab Club, Intramural Sports, various sports teams and student of the month and external rewards including Winner Circles, 4.0 Tea, and On the Rise Tea.Teachers at AP Giannini MIddle School go above and beyond in motivating and teaching the students. This includes lunchtime clubs, lunchtime tutoring, afterschool clubs and tutoring and art programs such as music concerts, plays and art shows.library use for research, reading, information loteracy, and technology skills offered to all classes. Students have a homeroom/first period block to maintain community and reduce tardies. Word Generation will be used schoolwide for academic literacy, comprehension, and discussion. Key Implementation Dates Fall 2010 Formative/authentic/informal assessements for targeted students based on CST scores in math/ Language Arts, to discover academic needs. The use of MAPS assessment and ALEKS math software for students will be used to inform instruction and change practice to achieve equity for all students. Counselors will monitor progress and track student grades and CST scores in order to increase student achievement. Create a forum, through homeroom/assemblies, for student voices to be heard in order for them to have input and ingagement in their learning. Among the data collected is ideas for improvement of school climate and suggessted school activities. Presentations will be made to the administration and written response through school loop and necessary actions taken. Student input in classroom activities and how work is presented such as in the choice of whole class readings, looking at ways to make math fun, such as manipulations and background music while they work. In order to inform teacher curriculum, studnets will participate in a variety of surveys and fishbowls. On going Spring 2010

To assess students' current needs and to fully engage students in learning, staff will do data-based inquiry(looking at student data to determine student needs.) Volunteer teachers/counselors will have students create their own Indivdual learning Plan in order to meet their own high expectations. In order to create a repetoire of best practices schoowide, the school will implement a system for peer visitation that includes observing focal students in colleagues' classrooms. The administration will be videotaped teaching a model lesson critiqued by the staff. 3: Accountability- Keeping our promises to students and families What does this goal mean at your school? What is the school you aspire to be with respect to a culture of service and keeping promises to students and families? the goal is to support our stakeholders which includes parents/guardians/caregivers, teachers, students, and community members. A culture of service is to create a positive and welcoming environment and partnership that include parent, teacher and student ; Our promise is to increase communication through a variety of media and venues. Create a structure in the office that invites. Create systems that address bullying that include all stakeholders to ensure safety. Have a rich, interesting, engaging academic program; Clear and systematic communication with parents/community that ensures all parents are included (school loop); institute parent workshops for access to school/community resources; Intervention plans with support for targeted students that includes parent role; College-prep readiness; Teacher training to deal with challenging students; Description of current conditions including data, and promising practices or assets your site has in place for this goal. There is a need to find ways to create communication and school access to those parents who do not often contact the school. While the majority of parents are satisfied with the school and its programs and communication, there is a need to reach out to those who especially are not satisfied or whose children are not successful in school, either academically, socially, or behavioral. Going into the neighborhoods is a potential strategy to reach those parents. School loop use will be taught to parents through workshops and neighborhood outreach and CBOs. To ensure reduction of the digital divide a survey will go out to families as to numbers who access computers and means for computer access will be given to parents. The autodial will be used for school information and events to go to families. Parent liaison and PTA will schedule parent workshops and support groups that are multi-lingual will will be implemented for parent/guardian access to school resources and support. In order to continue to foster a safe and respectful school climate, the Crisis Response Team with a school climate subcommittee will strengthen its componets and create an action plan and protocols for crises. Key Implementation Dates Spring In order to create a safe and respectful school climate, a variety of trainings, workshops, and lessons will be implemented in homerrom/classes/assemblies including Second Step Curriculum, Let's Get Real, Sensitivity trainins, Tribes, and Culturally Relevant Pedagogy. In order to create a welcoming environment and positive lines of communication amongst all community members, monthly parent coffee talks and teacher coffee talks will be held with the principal.
