American String Teachers Association Greater Los Angeles Section GUIDELINES FOR THE 50TH ANNUAL STRINGS SOLO RECITAL/COMPETITION PURPOSE To stimulate and encourage young people at all levels of development to study stringed instruments by providing opportunities for performance, evaluation, and recognition ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS 1. Participants in this program are limited to solo performance on violin, viola, cello, double bass, guitar, and harp. a. Participants may apply only upon the recommendation of their private teacher who must sign the application. b. Area Recital and LA Finals Age Categories (age as of May 23, 2015): Elementary: through age 11 Intermediate: ages 12 through 14 Pre-College: ages 15 through 18 Young Adult: ages 19 through 25 c. Photocopy of birth certificate or driver s license must accompany the application. 2. Teachers of participants must be active members of ASTA. 3. Repertoire: One selection must be chosen from the standard literature and should demonstrate musicianship, tone, and technique. a. Selection must be memorized. b. Performance time is limited to eight minutes for both Area Recitals/Competitions and LA Finals. c. Each entrant must provide his or her own accompanist. 4. Adjudication only. Students may enter the Area Recital/Competition for adjudication only. Students who wish to participate for evaluation only will indicate the length of time they have studied for the judges information on the application form. 5. Fees: Entrance Fee for Area Recital/Competition or adjudication only: $40 Entrance Fee for Los Angeles Recital/Competition Finals: additional $40 Entrance Fee for evaluation only: $25 a. Completed application and entrance fee must be sent to the Area Chairperson, postmarked at least four weeks prior to the Area Recital/Competition. b. First place winners and other winners recommended for advancement from the Area Recital/Competition must submit the separate entrance fee of $40 for the LA Finals. The fee is to be paid immediately and collected by the chairperson. 6. Residence: Students shall apply only in their area of residence. If living at school, the school is considered the student s residence. See the attached zip code page for lists of zip codes assigned to each area. 7. Prizes: Awards for the LA Final Competition will be as follows: Young Adult - $500; Pre-College - $400; Intermediate - $300; Elementary - $200. ADVANCEMENT Adjudicators from each Area competition may recommend one or more students in each instrument division in each age category to compete in the Los Angeles Final Recital/Competition. Area Recitals/Competitions for Bowed Strings will be scheduled as informal recitals in six different geographical areas. All first-place winners in their respective Areas will perform in the Los Angeles Final Recital/Competition. Participation guidelines All students MUST compete within their correct respective age categories as stated in the guidelines. Any winner of an Area competition who goes on to the Los Angeles Finals and does not win at the LA Finals must skip one year before participating again in any Area in their current age category, unless he/she ages up into the next age category, in which case he/she may compete again in the following year. Any winner in both his/her Area AND at the Los Angeles Finals may NOT compete again in that age category, but must wait until he/she reaches the correct age for the next age category. The only exception to this rule: Students in the Young Adult category, who win First Place at the Area level but not First Place at the Los Angeles Finals or at State, shall be eligible to return the following year. The judges may recommend additional winners to advance. Each first-place winner in the Los Angeles Final Recital/Competition will receive a free one-year student membership in ASTA and a cash award. OTHER GUIDELINES 1. Judging a. Prior to and during the competition, each student shall be identified to the judges by number only. b. Judges may ask candidates to play any part of their piece. c. Certificates will be awarded to each participant. 2. Area Recital / Competition for Bowed Strings are to be held in six geographical areas. See zip code chart. If fewer than four persons apply for an Area Recital/Competition, the Recital/Competition may be moved to another area. The same judges will be used, but students will remain separated by original area groups for judging. 3. Advancement to State Competition First-place winners of the Los Angeles Final Recital/Competition are eligible to compete in the State Competition, which occurs every 2 years; the judges may recommend additional winners to advance to the State Competition. First place winners of the off year are eligible to compete again in the next year when the State Competition occurs (Oct 2016). A Special Award of a solo performance with the CalStateLA Symphony Orchestra/Olympia Youth Orchestra, subject to approval of Conductor Fung Ho, may be presented to a participant in the 2015 Recital/Competition Finals.
