National Taiwan Normal University - List of Presidents 1st Chancellor Li Ji-gu (Term of Office: 1946.5 ~1948.6) Chancellor Li Ji-gu (1895-1968), former name Zong Wu, from Zhejiang, Shaoxing. Graduated from the College of History, Tokyo Higher Normal School and received a graduate diploma from Cambridge University. He was a lecturer at Peking University and Nankai University; held a professorship and was dean of Beiping University, Northwest University, Zhongshan University, Sichuan University and Fudan University; he also held various positions including provost at the Lusu Wanyu Border College for over 20 years. 2nd Chancellor Hsieh Tung-min (Term of Office: 1948.06 ~1949.06) Hsieh Tung-min (1908-2001), self-titled Qiu Sheng, from Guanghua Village, Ershui Township, Changhua County. He graduated from Zhongshan University, Guangzhou. He was a former mayor of Kaohsiung and sixth vice president of the Republic of Taiwan. In later years he was given the honorific Lord Xieqiu. 3rd Chancellor Liu Zhen (Term of Office: 1949.5~1957) President Liu Zhen (1913- ), style name Bai Ru. Graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy, Anhui University. He was a former legislator. In 1949, he was offered the post as chancellor of the predecessor of NTNU, the Taiwan Provincial College of Education. In 1955 when the college was reorganized as the Taiwan Provincial University of Education, he was offered the post of president and became the first president of the university. He established the motto "Sincerity, Integrity, Diligence and Simplicity" in the hope that it would set a standard for staff and students to cultivate their minds and values, advance the self and in turn advance society until perfection is attained.

4th President Du Yuan-zai (Term of Office: 1957~1966) President Du Yuan-zai (1893-1976) from Xupu, Hunan. He graduated from the Faculty of Education, Beijing Normal University. He received a doctoral degree in law from Northwest University. President Du took up the presidency of NTNU in 1957. During his term, his three goals were to strengthen education in nationalism, bring more attention to higher academic research and cultivate professionalism in education. During his term as president he achieved three major accomplishments which were influential to the development of NTNU: promoted progress of education, establishment of night classes and development of Overseas Chinese education. 5th President Sun Kang-ceng (Term of Office: 1966~1971) President Sun Kang-ceng (1898-2002). Style name Kang Zheng, from Meixian, Guangdong, graduated from the Faculty of Education, the Great China University, Shanghai. In the beginning of President Sun's term, he proposed "respect for the teachers, respect for the teaching, stand up for education, set examples" as precepts for the staff and students. In June 1967, when the university became a national institute, President Sun took up office again. Faced with greater and more glorious duties, President Sun maintained his proposal of three goals "Educate the teachers, cultivate the students, glorify our culture" to serve as encouragement to the advancement of the school. 6th President Zhang Zhong-liang (Term of Office: 1971~1978) President Zhang Zhong-liang (1908-1986), from Lujiang, Anhui. Graduated from Central University, received a doctorate degree from the University of London, England. He was a former representative in the National Assembly and former vice-president of the Examination Yuan. President Zhang's guiding principles were advancement of virtues and academia first. During President Zhang's term of office, the university went through its most rapid stages of development and renewal. Most construction started in this period, parts of the teaching buildings were completed, new equipment and facilities were purchased. On the main campus, the current student residences on Shida Road were built.

7th President Guo Wei-pan (Term of Office: 1978.08~1984.06) President Guo Wei-pan (1937- ), graduated from Library Studies, Faculty of Education, NTNU, received a PhD in Special Education from the University of Paris. He was a former Minister of Education, former Executive Yuan, Minister without Portfolio. During President Guo's term, he completed the construction of many university buildings, including the library, several residences, the College of Art's building, and established the College of Art and expanded centers with distinctive features. He actively promoted international academic collaboration and exchange. 8th President Liang Shang-yong (Term of Office: 1984~1993) President Liang Shang-yong (1930- ), graduated from the Faculty of Education, NTNU, received a PhD degree from the University of Missouri. He was a former Control Yuan Committee Member. During the term of President Liang, many major infrastructure projects were completed. He utilized funding effectively and proactively promoted research and implemented democracy on campus. He emphasized that a person from NTNU must be able to adjust to the changing times and should pursue these four points: recognizing and understanding cultural ideals, promoting the spirit of education, becoming an expert in specialized fields, training in specialized fields. 9th President Lu Xi-mu (Term of Office: 1993.02. ~1999.01.) President Lu Xi-mu (1940-), graduated from the College of Mathematics, NTNU; received a PhD in mathematics from the University of Washington. He was a former Control Yuan Committee Member. President Lu's guiding principles were to enhance NTNU's academic atmosphere and academic standards, endeavor to uplift NTNU as a leader in education academia and teacher training and cultivate students to have professional mindsets and values so that NTNU can maintain its distinctiveness as an education university.

10th President Maw-Fa Chien (Term of Office: 1999.07~2004.07) President Maw-Fa Chien (1941- ) graduated from the Graduate School of Education, NTNU; received a PhD in Educational Psychology from the University of Northern Colorado. Former president of Taichung University of Education, former vice-president of NTNU. President Chien's guiding principle was "a concord of tradition and innovation". He also sought to maintain tradition in carrying forth the responsibilities of NTNU's teacher education and education research; to be innovative in advocating humanity, democracy, technology, internationalization, excellence and innovation. In university development, these six axioms served as a foundation to promote seven developmental areas: improve academic research, expand the scope of the university, uphold the rights of staff and students, improve the environment and facilities, actively strive for more funding, increase community service and enhance administrative management. 11th President Mr. Huang Guang-cai (Term of Office: 2004.8.1~2005.4.20) President Huang Guang-cai (1953- ), graduated from the College of Mathematics, NTNU; received a doctoral degree from MIT. President Huang's guiding principles were to utilize the university website to enhance the flow of information, emphasize academia-industry collaboration and attach equal importance to teaching and research. He believed in the establishment of cross-interdisciplinary programs and utilizing programs to rapidly fulfill the demands of society. In addition he also encouraged students to participate in extra-curricular activities and to learn to cooperate and work as a team with others so as to build up communication skills and gain leadership skills. 12th President Yi-Shun Gou (Term of Office: 2006.02~2010.02) President Yi-Shun Gou (1941- ), graduated from the College of Physics, NTNU; received a PhD in Physics from the State University of New York. He was a former lecturer at National Chiao Tung University, former Director of the Physical Society of the Republic of Taiwan and a founding executive council member of the Taiwan Photonics Society. President Gou's guiding principle was the motto of NTNU "Sincerity, Integrity, Diligence and Simplicity". He believed in the implementation of the concept "education is life" in the cultivation of NTNU alumni equipped with both knowledge and values. He also pointed out that "classical values but a modern outlook" should be a major development direction for NTNU.

Current President Mr. Chang Kuo-En (2010.02~) President Chang Kuo-En (1958~) Graduated from the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. Received a PhD in Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University. He is the former director of NTNU's computer center, Dean of the Department of Information and Computer Education, Director of the Library and Vice-president. President Chang advocates the "Metamorphosis 95 - Model University" guiding principle. Metamorphosis is brought about through nine main development areas and five major proposals to become a model university nationally. The nine main development areas are: new modes of teaching excellence, new models for education training, cutting-edge research development, increased international exchange, globalization of Overseas Chinese education and Chinese language learning, establishing a Ubiquitous Campus, implementation of self-assessment, construction of a sustainable campus, administrative reforms and organizational restructuring.
