Security Desk Attendant Position Description Framingham State University I. General The Security Desk Attendant (SDA) is a member of the Residence Life staff who works at one of the seven 24-hour residence hall security desks. The SDA enhances safety and security, provides quality customer service, enforces policies, secures and maintains accurate records, refers residents and guests to appropriate staff, screens and monitors all individuals entering the residence hall main entry. The SDA is directly supervised by the Area Director (AD) and co-supervised by the Administrative Resident Assistant (ARA). II. Qualifications SDAs Candidates must: 1. Be a current fulltime matriculated student at Framingham State University. SDAs must have a record indicating good citizenship within the University community and may not be on disciplinary probation status. 2. Serve as a positive role model while maintaining good social, academic (maintain at least a 2.0 GPA), and financial standing at the University. 3. Be available to serve in the position throughout the current academic year. 4. Possess strong communication and interpersonal skills. 5. Be committed to outstanding work attendance. III. Employment and Time Commitments SDAs are hourly student staff members. In addition to regularly scheduled shifts SDAs are expected to: Attend and actively participate in training sessions, staff development programs, and staff meetings as assigned. Work late night and weekend shifts and expect some late night calls to cover open shifts. Demonstrate willingness to take open hours and cover emergency shifts. Work a minimum weekly average of six (6) permanent hours of security desk within the residence hall. IV. Duties and Responsibilities Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Safety and Security Monitor and verify that ALL individuals entering the residence hall are authorized and can provide valid identification. Demonstrate thorough knowledge of, and ability to communicate, interpret and enforce information/policies contained in the SDA Manual, the Guide to Residence Living, and the University Guidelines and Policies sections of the Ram Student Handbook. Be familiar with information contained in The University Catalog, other sections of the Ram Student Handbook, and in other provided publications and postings. Be attentive to hall facilities and atmosphere reporting concerns of vandalism, inappropriate conduct, and/or policy violation to the RA on Duty and/or AD on Duty. Provide continuous coverage of the security desk while on duty. The security desk may not be left unattended. Customer Service Greet and assist ALL individuals entering the residence hall in an attentive, courteous and responsive manner. Act professionally and respectfully in all interactions with other residents, guests, and visitors. Report to scheduled shift wearing staff shirt, and present a clean, neat, and professional appearance. Respond to telephone calls in a cheerful, polite manner and in a spirit of helpfulness. Resource and Referral Agent Effectively communicate and report student issues and concerns to appropriate professional staff members in a timely manner. Keeps the AD informed of potential problem situations and emergencies in a timely manner. Treats information with extreme sensitivity, while understanding that information must be shared with the properly designated administrator(s). While the SDA can assure a student that information will be treated with great sensitivity, no SDA can guarantee confidentiality to students. Administrative Respond to room telephone calls and voicemails in a timely manner. Ability to write and submit incident reports immediately after an incident in accordance with departmental policy. Shares responsibilities as a member of the team. Supports the policies and protocols of the college and department in word, action, and spirit. Assumes emergency desk coverage, assistance with hall incidents as necessary or directed. Contacts and consults with the RA or AD on Duty with problems beyond the scope of the SDA s training and responsibility. Role Modeling Acts as a positive academic and social role model. Acts as a positive representative of the University and Residence Life staff at all times. This includes attending classes regularly, utilizing academic support services when experiencing academic concerns, modeling good emotional management and self care and by supervising and abiding by University and residence hall policies and protocols in action, and spirit. Supports and abides by all rules and policies of the University. Demonstrates ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with residents and staff. Other Other related duties as may be deemed appropriate and assigned by the Associate Dean of Students /Director of Residence Life and/or designee. V. Compensation The position is paid hourly at the rate $11.00 for shifts worked from 8:00 a.m. to Midnight. Shifts worked Midnight to 8:00 a.m. and weekends are paid at the rate of $12.00.
