2012 Vance County 4-H Summer Fun Announced by Pam Jones, Extension Agent 4-H Youth Development, NC Cooperative Extension--Vance County 305 Young Street, Henderson, NC Telephone (252) 438-8188 4-H Summer Fun is a special program of NC Cooperative Extension, Vance County 4-H program. The program will run June-July with exciting, educational and fun opportunities for youth grades K-12. 1. Participation requires completion of a 4-H enrollment packet. You do not have to be a 4-H club member to participate. 2. 4-H age is considered to be the age as of January 1, 2012 (except for overnight camp). 3. Registration is on a FIRST PAID -FIRST RESERVED basis. Youth will NOT be placed in classes until completed forms are received. Registrations may not be made by phone or mail. 4. Come by the Vance County Cooperative Extension Center, 305 Young Street, Henderson to register between 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Plan to spend 20-30 minutes filling out forms. Bring your driver's license and complete insurance information including policy number, company address and telephone. 4-H secretary provides free notary service. For your convenience, forms are available online at vance.ces.ncsu.edu (click on 4-H & Youth). Download and bring completed forms to be notarized to save time. 5. Registration will be open to any Vance County youth ages 5-18 beginning May 14. DEADLINE: 2 weeks prior to each event. 6. An annual registration fee of $2 per participant is required in addition to the class fee. Payment is required at registration and can be paid with cash/check payable to "Cooperative Extension 4-H". Please bring 2 cans of food for our 4-H HUNGRY TO HELP program. 7. Refunds will not be given unless a class is cancelled. If your child cannot attend, you may call the office and see if anyone is on the waiting list with whom you could transfer enrollment and exchange money. 8. Unless otherwise stated classes will meet at the Vance County Cooperative Extension Office and youth should wear clothing that is comfortable for lots of movement and can get dirty! Summertime is 4-H FUN TIME! 2012 Schedule JUNE June 8 (Friday) Teen Volunteer Training for 4-H Summer Program Time: Depart the Vance County office at 7:30 a.m. Location: Guilford County Ages: 14-18 Limit: 6 Cost: Free, money for fast food lunch Description: Travel to Guilford County with agent for volunteer training. Teen Summer Program volunteers. June 11-13 Citizenship NC Focus (Monday- Time: Depart the Vance County office at 9:30 a.m. Location: Raleigh Wednesday) Ages: 14-18 Limit: 2 Cost: $150 Description: What are my responsibilities as a citizen and how can I help my community? FULL FOR 2012 but consider for next year. Scholarships available. June 13 Bike Rodeo (Wednesday) Time: 1 4 p.m. Location: To be determined Ages: 6 years and up Limit: 20 Cost: $3 Description: Bring your bike and have fun learning safety and trying out an obstacle course. Receive a free bike helmet for completing the course. June 14 Stars & Stripes and You (Thursday) Time: 9 a.m.-12 noon Location: Vance County Office Building Ages: 9 years and up Limit: 10 Cost: $3 Description: Is the pledge all we should know about our flag? Fun facts, flag folding, and Stars and Stripes cake. June 14 Vance County Activity Day (Thursday) TIME: 4-6 p.m. Location: Vance County Office Building Ages: 5-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-15, 16+ Limit: 0 Cost: No cost Description: Prepare a 5-12 minute illustrated talk and present it to friendly judges. Winners in may go to District Activity Day and compete for prizes. Excellent public speaking training. June 15 Fishing Rodeo I (Friday) Time: 9 a.m.-12 noon Location: Satterwhite Point Shelter 2 Ages: 8-14 years Limit: 10 Cost: $6 Description: Come to the Kerr Lake to learn basic fishing skills, fishing safety, and fish identification. Fishing rods and bait provided. We will depart from and return to the Extension office. Water and snack provided. Wear hat, sunscreen, and close-toed shoes.

June 19-21 Soil to Salad: How Does YOUR Garden Grow? (Tue-Thurs) Time: 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Location: Vance County Office Building Ages: 8-11 years Limit: 10 Cost: $10 Description: 4-H Master Gardener Summer Day Camp buzzing bees, sowing seeds, soil (not dirt), plants, farm tour. Visit the Farmer s Market, bring back locally-grown food and cook it up into something fresh and wonderful. Tour several farms to see area farmers at work raising crops and animals. June 22 Ready, Set, Launch! (Friday) Time: 9 a.m.-12 noon Location: Vance County Office Building Ages: 8 years and up Limit: 12 Cost: $10 (Cost of rocket kit) Description: Each participant will learn 4-H rocketry skills, then will build a model rocket and launch it twice. June 22 Oh, the Power of It! (Friday) Time: 1 p.m.-4 p.m. Location: Vance County Office Building Ages: 10 years and up Limit: 12 Cost: $5 Description: Make electricity work for you! Participants will learn basic principles of electricity and how to solder to complete circuits. Complete this year s NC 4-H electric project to take home. June 24-29 Overnight Group Camp Week Location: Eastern 4-H Environmental (Sun-Fri) Ages: 8-12 years Limit: 8 Cost: $390 Education Center, Columbia, NC Description: Vance County 4-H will take a group to camp. County groups get a discount, so contact 4-H agent or secretary to check whether space is available. Cost $390 includes transportation, t-shirt, camp money. June 25-28 Guitar I (Mon-Thu) Time: 11-11:45 a.m. Location: Hill s Music Shoppe Ages: 6-9 years Limit: 8 Cost: $20 Description: Beginning learners only. Guitars supplied for class; cost is for books only. June 25-28 Guitar II (Mon-Thu) Time: 1-1:45 p.m. Location: Hill s Music Shoppe Ages: 10 years and up Limit: 8 Cost: $20 Description: Beginning learners only. Guitars supplied for class; cost is for books only. July July 9-11 4-H Electric Congress (Mon-Wed) Time: overnight Location: Raleigh Ages: 12 years and up Limit: 2 Cost: Free but must qualify. Description: Meet other 4-hers from across NC to learn more about careers in the energy industry, participate in educational workshops, meet Power Company Representatives, and go on a special fun excursion on a riverboat.

July 10-12 Girls Volleyball Day Camp (Tue-Thurs) Time: 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Location: Aycock Rec Center gym Ages: 8-12 years Limit: 32 Cost: $15 Description: Come and be placed on a team to learn volleyball basics. Play skill-learning games and participate in volleyball drills. Bring a bag lunch daily; snacks will be provided. July 12, we ask parents to join us at 12:30 p.m. to see what their children have learned as they watch them play an exhibition match. Taught by college/high school volleyball volunteers. July 16-18 4-H Congress (Mon-Wed) Time: overnight Location: NCSU, Raleigh Ages: 13-18 years Limit: 5 Cost: $195 Description: Stay in a dorm at NC State University, meet other teens from across the state and participate in workshops, presentations, elections, banquet, dance, and more. Transportation provided. July 19-20 Zoo Snooze (Thu-Fri) Time: overnight Location: NC Zoo, Asheboro Ages: 7-12 years Limit: 15 Cost: $35 Description: Spend the night (and the next day) with the animals. Transportation, breakfast and zoo admission included. July 24 Saddle up for SaddleRock (Tue) Time: 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Location: Saddlerock Farms Ages: 5-8 years Limit: 20 Cost: $10 Description: Meet at the farm on Weldon Road for a morning of horseback riding, hayride, small animals, and a trick horse demonstration.
