We are hoored that you have chose to pursue your educatio at Ohloe College ad are excited to have this opportuity to share our campuses, programs, ad services with you. We hope that you will take advatage of the may programs ad services available at Ohloe. GOOD NEWS ABOUT OHLONE! At Ohloe we are proud of the accomplishmets made by our dedicated studets, faculty, staff, ad alumi. We are pleased to share several of the highlights of the past year at Ohloe, which are a mere samplig of the great thigs that are goig o at Ohloe. Studet Accomplishmets The success rate of studets erolled i basic skills Math classes for Fall 2010 was up 10% over Fall 2009 ad is at its highest rate i at least the past 10 years. O November 15, 2011 over 100 studets from Ohloe evirometal studies courses trasformed a 2,200 square foot space at the Newark campus ito a Urba Farm Research Lab to celebrate America Recycles Day. They were joied by employees of Waste Maagemet of Alameda Couty ad WMEarthCare (WMEC), who doated all the materials ad labor, ad will be beefitig from the research that Ohloe studets coduct i the lab. At the Commuity College League of Califoria coferece i Sa Jose durig fall 2011, attedees were treated to performaces by the Ohloe Jazz/Rock Combo ad the Ohloe Guitar Esemble. We have received a official thak you for the superb job they did ad a commedatio for Tim Roberts, Assistat Professor i Music, for his great work with studets. Paul Mueller s stellar photography studets recetly completed a book project, Capturig Ohloe about Ohloe College. O Jue 25, 2011 Ohloe College hosted the NABCEP (North America Board of Certified Eergy Practitioers) photovoltaic etry level examiatio. NABCEP is the gold stadard for photovoltaic ad solar thermal istallatio certificatio. Fourtee studets took the exam ad twelve passed, for a cumulative pass rate of 85.71%. The atioal pass rate is 50%. Ohloe s PTA Program graduates ow officially have posted a 100% pass rate o the Natioal Physical Therapist Assistat Exam for the past five years! Members of Ohloe s Speech ad Debate team wo prizes at the Diablo Valley College Touramet i Poetry Iterpretatio, icludig a first place i poetry, Programmed Oral Iterpretatio, ad Dramatic Iterpretatio. At the Califoria State Speech Touramet March 15-18, 2012 Ohloe studets took the fourth place sweepstakes for small schools ad Philip Eguacho eared a Silver Medal i Prose Iterpretatio. Two of our studets, Philip Eguacho ad Heather Warre, qualified for the Natioal touramet. (cotiued o ext page)

At the first touramet Eric Camacho eared a secod place i Novice Extemporaeous Speakig ad fourth place i Novice Impromptu; Phillip Eguacho eared a place i Novice Poetry Iterpretatio ad third place i Programmed Oral Iterpretatio; Heather Warre eared Commuicatio Aalysis, Top Novice Speaker; Dramatic Iterpretatio, Top Novice Speaker; ad third place i Prose Iterpretatio. Athletics 2011-2012 was oce agai aother amazig year for Ohloe Athletics. Ohloe offered 11 sports durig 2011-2012 ad six sports wet o to compete i the post seaso. Graduated sophomores Jaso Corbett, Swimmig, ad Jessica Varady, Softball, were hoored as the 2010-2011 Male ad Female Athletes of the Year durig the 27th Aual Fremot Bak ad Ohloe College Golf Touramet i September 2011. The Ohloe Wome s Soccer Team posted a record of 14-5-2 to ear the 14th seed i the Norther Califoria State Playoffs. This is the secod cosecutive year that the wome have see a postseaso berth. Ohloe Me s Soccer completed the seaso o a high ote that was accetuated by a draw over Foothill, the secod place team i the regio. The 2011 squad was a mix of players from aroud the Bay Area ad beyod. The Ohloe team cotiues to add local players from Fremot, Sa Jose, Newark, Uio City, Pleasato, Hayward, Sa Lorezo, ad eve Phoeix, Chicago, ad beyod. O the iteratioal side, players from Mexico, Costa Rica, Eglad, Germay, Afghaista, Ghaa, Nigeria, Belgium, ad other atioalities have foud Ohloe a great place to start their college playig career. Special ackowledgemets go to Joatha Cookie Satilla, sophomore, ad Greive Pacheco Quesada, both amed All Coferece first team players; ad to Joshua Weiert, sophomore, ad Domiic Hertz, freshma, secod team All Coferece. The team s fial record was 8-7-6 overall ad a coferece fiish of 7-4-3, which was a fiish oe place out of the top six that go o to the playoffs. The Volleyball Team fiished 3rd i the coferece with a 17-8 record, which represets their first wiig record i almost a decade. The team received Hoorable Metio i the fial six of seve Top 25 State Polls. Cogratulatios to all four sophomores as they will be leavig Ohloe with a associate degree. Two freshme, Lidsey Calabrese ad Jeifer Covey, were selected to the All-Coferece Team. The volleyball program has bee growig uder Coach Peaflor s leadership ad we are very excited to see this program grow. Ohloe s Me s Basketball fiished the seaso with a record of 15-12 ad a coferece record of 8-4. The 2011-2012 seaso was extremely successful with the team advacig to the Norther Califoria Regioal s as the 6th seeded team. Coach Peterso is proud to aouce that all of his graduatig sophomores have bee placed ad/or will be acceptig placemet to four-year uiversities to cotiue their academic ad athletic pursuits. The Wome s Basketball Team wo the 2011-2012 Coast Coferece Champioship for the fourth cosecutive year. They had a 12-0 record i coferece play ad a 24-6 record overall, which is oly the secod time sice 2007 that the team has wo more tha 20 games i a seaso. Coach Julia Alleder was amed, oce agai, Coast Coferece Coach of the Year. Player accomplishmets iclude Sophomore Chereese Thomas, who eared Coferece MVP, 1st Team All State, ad 2012 Norther Califoria Player of the Year. Tia Dag eared 2d Team All State ad All Coferece. Nikki Beckma eared All Coferece. Four out of the four sophomores will be trasferrig, three of them with a associate degree. Chereese ad Nikki will be attedig four-year uiversities with full-ride athletic scholarships to the D1 level. Ohloe s Swim Team competed well this year with two members of the team qualifyig ad competig i the State Champioship Touramet. Deva Seeley ad Victoria Gerome both qualified for three idividual evets. Cogratulatios to Deva as she recetly broke the Ohloe record i the 200 idividual medley. The Ohloe Softball Team oce agai qualified for 2012 Post Seaso Playoffs. The Reegades have qualified for postseaso for 24 years uder Coach Doa Ruyo. The 2012 seaso had the Reegades seeded i Norther Califoria as the 6th seed i Regioal Playoffs. Their coferece record was agai a 15-3 record ad 27-11 overall. Ohloe received first, secod, ad hoorable metio hoors by placig five players o first team, four players o secod team, ad a player o hoorable metio. Ohloe had a player selected o the All State Team ad a selectio to the All America Team as well this year. Ohloe s Baseball Team oce agai captured the 2012 Coast Coferece Champioship, which was solidified four games prior to the ed of the regular seaso. This year the Baseball Team fiished with a overall record of 26-10 ad a coferece record of 20-4. The team was seeded 3rd for the post seaso playoffs, which is the highest rakig sice their State Champioship seaso of 2010. There were 13 members of this squad that were hoored with 1st team or 2d team All-Coferece. Secod year Coach Julia Russell was amed, oce agai, Coast Coferece Coach of the Year. Faculty ad Staff Accomplishmets Ohloe College Associate Professor of Chemistry Dr. Maru Grat, Couselor Breda Arteaga-Reyoso, ad Ohloe studets Jasmie Cacio, Elizabeth Rodriguez, ad Roberto Rosas were hoored i Jue 2011 by Avazado, a Newark commuity group dedicated to advacig ad empowerig our Latio youth, their families, ad our commuity. Kate Harriso, Ohloe Commuity Educatio ad Workforce Developmet Program Coordiator, has bee selected by the Associatio of Commuity ad Cotiuig Educatio to receive the award for creatig a model program. Kate s award is for Ohloe for Kids ad Tees. Cythia Katoa, Emeritus Professor of Eglish, has published a ew book of haiku, Imagie My Surprise. (cotiued o ext page)

Durig Summer 2011 fourtee Ohloe College faculty taught overseas, at our parter schools i Chia ad Vietam. The disciplies represeted by our faculty were ESL, Music, Busiess, Computer Sciece, ad Computer Networkig. The istructio took place i Shaghai, Suzhou, ad Hagzhou, Chia, ad i Ho Chi Mih City ad Haoi, Vietam. These activities were subsidized by our just-cocluded BIE grat program ad our Eglish Laguage Istitute (ELI). College Accomplishmets I the 2012 ARCC (Accoutability Reportig for Commuity Colleges) report Ohloe College scored above both the peer group ad the statewide average for all seve studet success idicators for the secod year i a row. This year there were four of the 112 commuity colleges to achieve that level of success. I additio to Ohloe, Foothill, Gledale, ad Sierra Colleges were rated above peer ad statewide rates for all seve idicators. Ohloe is i the top three of all peers o five of the seve idicators. Fially, o the most critical Progress ad Achievemet idicator, which is based o trasfers ad completers, Ohloe is umber oe amog our peers. September s 2011 Ohloe College Foudatio Golf touramet etted a estimated $45,000 for our Athletics program the highest amout ever! Ohloe is i the third semester of implemetatio of a ew itership program for our biotechology studets. Typically we try to place our biotech studets with local compaies to gai some real-world experiece where they ca practice some of the skills they lear i our program. However, sice the idustry itership positios have recetly bee fewer, the biotechology faculty developed a iteral itership opportuity for the studets. Studets go through the iterview process with some of our biotech faculty ad sciece lab techicias as iterviewers, the each lab techicia selects a biotech studet to serve for oe semester as a iter i their lab o campus. This itershipmetorig arragemet is for credit, ad the Ohloe lab techicia gais some assistace from studet iters practicig their laboratory skills i the real-world eviromet of a microbiology or chemistry laboratory. The partership betwee Ohloe s high school outreach program i biotechology, the Learig Alliace for Biosciece (LAB), ad CSU East Bay pays for Ohloe studets to gai some teachig experiece by servig as i-class tutors ad teachig assistats. This arragemet provides assistace for high school teachers i our LAB Program. Oe great outcome is that LAB studets who, after comig to Ohloe College ad cotiuig their studies i Biotechology, become eligible to retur to their respective high schools to serve as teachig assistats ad tutors. Ohloe College Deaf Studies celebrated its 40th aiversary o April 19, 2012. For forty years, the Laguage ad Culture Ceter for Deaf Studies at Ohloe College has opeed the doors to educatioal ad occupatioal opportuities for the Deaf ad Hard of Hearig. Ispired by the leadership of George Attletweed ad other visioary educators, the Deaf Studies Divisio at Ohloe College allowed for Deaf studets i the area to cotiue their educatio at a istitutio for higher learig. Deaf Studies has expaded to iclude istructio i ASL ad a Iterpreter Preparatio Program (IPP). Sice its foudig i 1972, the Deaf Studies Divisio has grow to serve more tha 200 Deaf ad Hard of Hearig studets each year ad 420 ASL ad IPP studets. It is oe of the largest ad most comprehesive programs i the West, with award wiig faculty ad a ew state-of-the-art Laguage Lab. The divisio has a atioal ad iteratioal reputatio for excellece i educatio with their collaboratio with Japa (JASS ad the Nippo Foudatio), Swede, ad visitors from all over the world. The Ohloe College Newark Campus Urba Garde has bee desigated as a Moarch Butterfly Statio by Moarch Watch. The moarch s exquisite orage ad black markigs ad large size make it a wildlife gardeer s favorite. Moarchs appear i North America s gardes i sprig, summer, ad fall. The moarch is the oly butterfly that migrates seasoally i the same way that birds do. Our garde is very attractive to the moarchs because of the Africa milkweed we have plated. It is the moarch s favorite food ad mai choice for depositig its larvae. Our Newark Urba Garde will also be a stop o the sprig 2012 aual Garde Tour of over 65 gardes located i geographic clusters i Alameda, Mari, Napa, ad Sata Clara couties. This year s host gardes represet the may differet styles of Bay-friedly plats. They iclude urba homesteads with orchards, chickes ad bees, greywater istallatios by local experts, ad drought tolerat replacemets for water thirsty laws. The host gardeers themselves are a diverse group that icludes permaculturists, ative plat ethusiasts, do-ityourselfers, ladscape professioals, ad Ohloe. Program awards for 2010-2011 were up 80% over 2009-2010, with the umber of associate degrees awarded up 45%, ad the certificates awarded were up 220%. This icrease reflects a college wide effort by faculty, couselors, deas, Studet Services, ad other maagers to ecourage studets to complete a program before they leave Ohloe. This icrease also aligs with a systemwide effort to icrease completios. Commuity Outreach Commuity Educatio successfully added 30 courses to the state s Eligible Traiig Provider List. These courses ow qualify for Workforce Ivestmet Act fuds, allowig dislocated workers to take courses through commuity educatio o govermet grats. Commuity Educatio is also extedig its course offerigs, schedulig several Fie Arts, Healthy Livig, ad special iterest classes that are curretly i high demad at other commuity colleges. Our Tri-Cities Oe-Stop Career Ceter ad the Alameda Couty WIB has bee doig great thigs for the laid off Solydra workers. These evets iclude two orietatios i September 2011 that had a attedace of 160 people; a job fair i September 2011 that was atteded by 160 people, ad a sessio o how to access affordable health care whe Cobra is ot a optio, atteded by 30 people. The Oe-Stop Career Ceter has hosted five erollmet days ad more dates are scheduled. Curretly we have erolled 104 people i the WIA program. We are also workig with several Eastbay employers who are iterested i employig these idividuals.

Studets were also itroduced to the strog etwork of support that exists at Ohloe to assist studets as they make the trasitio from high school to college. The first commuity college i the Uited States, Joliet Juior College i Illiois, was fouded i 1901, makig 2011 the 110th aiversary of the commuity college system. Accordig to the America Associatio of Commuity Colleges, as of 2012 there were 1132 commuity colleges i the Uited States, with 986 of those istitutios beig publicly cotrolled. There were 13 millio studets attedig commuity colleges i the Uited States i Fall 2009, represetig 44% of all udergraduate studets i the Uited States ad 43% of all first-time freshme i the Uited States. I 2008-2009 commuity colleges awarded more tha 630,000 associate degrees ad early 425,000 certificates. The Califoria Commuity College system of two-year public istitutios is composed of 112 colleges statewide orgaized ito 72 districts. Durig the 2010-2011 academic year the Califoria Commuity College system erolled more tha 2.60 millio studets, more tha 85,000 studets eared a associate degree, ad more tha 47,000 studets eared a certificate. Ohloe College is part of the Ohloe Commuity College District. The Fremot campus is located o Missio Boulevard off Highway 680 o a beautiful 534- acre hillside site just south of historical Missio Sa Jose. The Newark campus is located o Cherry Street west of Highway 880 o a 31-acre site adjacet to the Sa Fracisco Bay. Officially amed Ohloe College o Jue 18, 1967, the istitutio hoors the early Ohloe Idias of the Costaoa tribe, who ihabited the Fremot ad Newark area. Log before the local Idias were amed Costaoas by the Spaish priests, they were kow by a eighborig Miwuk tribe as the Ohloes or people of the West. Distiguished by peaceful pursuits, especially i agriculture, they held profoud reverece for the earth, believig it was theirs for livig ad ot for the takig. They aided the Fracisca Fathers i buildig the Missio Sa Jose de Guadalupe i the late 18th cetury ad prospered util 1806-1833 whe a series of epidemics virtually destroyed the tribe. Classes were first held at a temporary site i the former Serra Ceter Home for Girls o Washigto Boulevard i Fremot. A year later, the Huddleso Rach property, located i the Missio foothills just south of old Missio Sa José, was selected as the permaet campus site. The 2006-2007 academic year marked the 40th aiversary of servig the Tri-cities commuity with higher educatio opportuities. Awarded LEED Platium Certificatio from the U.S. Gree Buildig Coucil, the highest achievable level of sustaiability, the campus serves as a model for other colleges to follow. Buildig 5 was dedicated to the memory of the Ohloe Trustee Abraham (Abe) Hochler o Jue 17, 1976.
