THE UTRGV IDENTITY The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) is the first major public university of the 21st century in Texas. We have built the university carefully, developed its brand, and have begun the real work of UTRGV. That work depends heavily on communication and collaboration, which is another way of saying that our work depends on trust. Questions? As we communicate and interact with our audiences in these first years and decades, we will build the trust that will allow us to work more effectively together. That is what we mean by brand equity. The university s visual identity is the mark for that trust. Everyone at UTRGV becomes responsible for building more trust in the university. As stewards of the visual identity for UTRGV, we build trust and brand equity as we use the graphic identity system consistently, repeatedly, and with confidence. The purpose of this guide is to help you do just that. This guide provides invaluable resources and essential guidelines to ensure all of our marketing and communications materials reflect the professionalism and commitment of UTRGV. Use this manual as a reference and a resource. Understand the reasoning behind the identity guidelines and ask for help or clarification as questions arise. We will build the UTRGV brand, together. LOGO The official wordmark for UTRGV is the Rockin R. There are three versions of the wordmark. The Rockin R logos may be downloaded here. By downloading the UTRGV logos, the user agrees to comply with the rules of use set forth in this guide. The UTRGV wordmarks and logos are for university office use only and may not be shared with any outside organizations or reproduced on any non-utrgv materials without express permission from University Marketing & Communications. Preferred Version The primary and preferred visual mark for the university is the Rockin R logo that shows the full, spelled-out name of the university in two lines. Both lines align visually along the left side. The top line, The University of Texas, is smaller than the second line, Rio Grande Valley. Use it on all official publications and as the first identifier of the university. The preferred version is in two colors, with the top line in UTRGV orange and the second line in UTRGV gray. All versions of the university logo must include the trademark symbol. Initials The secondary preferred version of the Rockin R presents just the initials in a single block, with a color break between UT and RGV. Use this in situations where the university s identity is well-established, for example, as the closing mark on a publication whose cover bears the full mark. It might also be chosen for campus banners, internal communications, or any use where the full name has already been established. LOGO continued Special Case Version: Horizontal This logo version of the Rockin R may be used in very horizontal applications, such as a banner or an imprint on a pen. Note that The University of Texas has been condensed to the initials, so care should be taken to use this version only in settings where UT will be read as The University of Texas. File name: Rockin R Horz-4C.eps Special Case Version: Stacked This alternative, more vertical Rockin R logo may be used where available space is not wide enough for the preferred version to be legible, or the imprint space is more square than rectangular (e.g., the door panel on a subcompact car). UTRGV COLOR PALETTE The university s identifying colors are orange and gray, as specified below (also called UTRGV Orange and UTRGV Gray ). Note that UTRGV Gray may be either the PMS spot color, Cool Gray 10, or 74% black, in process printing or a black-ink-only setting. The navy and green that are specified below may be used sparingly and only for minor accents. Orange and gray should be the dominant brand colors. COLLEGE LOGOS Overview: Three Patterns Each of the 11 major academic entities within UTRGV (the seven colleges, the School of Medicine, Graduate College, Honors College, and University College) has its own mark, in three different arrangements, or patterns. The first two patterns incorporate the two preferred versions of the university logo, the full-name version and the initials version. In addition, a third pattern for each college uses the initials version of the university logo and gives the college name prominence. In all three patterns, the type aligns left and a dotted line separates the university logo from the carefully typeset college name. Full Pattern The dotted line and college type align with the left edge of the university type Initials Pattern The college typeface is Caecillia Bold Italic Each college name is different in length but the point size and size relationship is to always remain the same The college typeface is Caecillia Bold Italic The dotted line always stops here on the full version of logo Although any of these logos may be proportionately scaled to fit, the relative type sizes and the overall spatial relationship within each pattern must not be altered. COLLEGE LOGOS continued Special Case: School of Medicine The School of Medicine logo has an additional element a caduceus and two additional patterns, one that uses the horizontal special case version of the university logo and one that uses the initials version. In some cases, the School of Medicine logo may be used without the School of Medicine s name, just the caduceus. The caduceus in all patterns is in UTRGV gray. Not shown in this guide, but files available: An all-white version (reverse) of each of these patterns, to be used when the two-color version would not be legible on background color. LOGO The College Logos Each of the 11 colleges has its own but matching mark. Each college logo has three options: the full name, the Initials version and a version where the college name is emphasized............. 9

UNIVERSITY SEAL When You May Use the Seal The official UTRGV seal is pending approval from the UT System Board of Regents. It will be tradmarked by the UT System and may be used only with express permission of the UT System or the Office of the President of UTRGV. The seal is only for use on official documents such as diplomas, certificates and transcripts, and at official meetings and functions such as commencement or as approved by the UTRGV president. The seal cannot be used as a graphic element in items or materials such as brochures, advertisements, invitations and apparel without written authorization from the UTRGV Office of the President. Color This is the standard version of the seal, to be used in any application or medium that supports color reproduction. TM Black (No Color) This is an alternate version of the seal, designed for applications or media that are not colorcapable, such as embossing, debossing, foil-stamping, and so on. TM 11

VAQUERO GRAPHIC Horse and Rider In addition to the UTRGV Rockin R wordmark and signature, the university is represented by the Vaquero. The Vaquero is the official nickname of UTRGV. These versions of the Vaquero are authorized for use university-wide and are not limited to athletics use only. Please note: Student organizations are not authorized to use these marks. The Vaquero should not take the place as a primary emblem for any office or department. If an office would like to use the Vaquero logo, please contact the Marketing and Communications Office. These are trademarked logos and no office may sell any items using these marks without official authorization from the UT System Trademark and Licencing Office. ATHLETICS GRAPHICS The athletics logos were developed for use by UTRGV s Athletics Department. The Star V and the UTRGV are the prefered logos for UTRGV athletics. Versions of the UTRGV logo are available with each sport incorporated into the logo. These marks are not available for use by other university departments and may not be incorporated into non-athletics designs. Please note that only the Vaquero horse and rider, independent of the athletics wordmarks, are authorized for university-wide use, see page XX. The complete athletics style guide is available at.
