Managed by CoreGRID: A Network of Excellence in Grid and P2P Technologies Thierry PRIOL INRIA/ERCIM Thierry.Priol@inria.fr European Research Network on Foundations, Software Infrastructures and Applications for large scale distributed, GRID and Peer-to-Peer Technologies
CoreGRID and the EU Grid vision CoreGRID We are committed to making next generation grids happen by overcoming the technological and scientific obstacles ahead 2
Why CoreGRID? Visibility does not match European investments in Grid Research activities are widely dispersed and uncoordinated More than 15 national initiatives with their own research agendas Fragmentation and duplication of efforts Most current Grid projects are driven by short-term goals Strong pressure to develop a working environment from Grid promoters, end-users and institutions that provide funding Short-term research to solve day-to-day problems E-SCIENCE DAS BE-GRID SGIGRID D-GRID METACENTER ACI GRID H-GRID SWISSGRID What are the consequences? Lack of medium- and long-term research to shape the Next Generation Grids A research community that is not yet well identified and sustainable Serious possibility of repeating history (GRID next buzzword after HPCN) IRISGRID GRID.IT NORDUGRID BG-GRID HELLAS-GRID CYGRID 3
CoreGRID objectives To build a European-wide research laboratory Create the European Grid Lighthouse and be seen as such worldwide To achieve integration and sustainability To build solid foundations for GRID and Peer-to-Peer (P2P) technologies Both on a methodological basis and a technological basis Support medium- and long-term research activities Achieve and promote scientific and technological excellence within & beyond the Grid research community Gather and disseminate European research A think-tank for spin-off projects EC funded, bilateral projects,

Network priorities Excellence CoreGRID brings together a European critical mass of well-known experts in GRID and P2P research allowing competion with research & development in US and Japan An ambitious joint program of activities to deal with well identified challenges Long-term integration & structuring Set-up a sustainable European research laboratory with associated management With several Institutes With research groups assigned to Institutes
A set of well identified research challenges Knowledge & Data Management Handling information/data that are required/produced by a wide range of diverse processing power Programming Model Making the programming of Grid infrastructures as simple and transparent as possible System Architecture Designing the next generation Grid middleware Grid Information and Monitoring Services Scalable information service to implement a service view of the Grid Resource Management & Scheduling Scheduling jobs/applications/tasks/computation within a Grid environment Problem Solving Environments, tools and GRID systems Integrating various middleware, tools and applications for problem solving
Expected Achievements Enforce collaboration between European researchers Researchers have strong motivations to collaborate with other researchers, but there is a lack of tools at the European level Thanks to a mobility programme for researchers, post-docs and PhDs--an effective tool for ensuring integration Increase the impact of European Research by liaising and cooperating with industry and business One dedicated partner which is strongly oriented towards industry (CETIC) Through the Industry Advisory Board In synergy with IPs
Exploitation Encourage the adoption of results/software produced by the network A web site and a shared workspace to ensure internal dissemination and communication Publications and reports will be available like any research center A software repository to make everyone aware of what has been produced in terms of software A strong involvement from partners to exploit the results In their own countries with their relevant departments (press, industry) Coordinated approach to prepare R&D project proposals To exploit particular results with some network partners and some additional industrial partners
