ABSTRACT ARIE GUNAWAN PRASETYA. 2013. THE USE OF MULTIMEDIA TO TEACH VOCABULARY TO THE FOURTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SD NEGERI 02 BEJEN KARANGANYAR. English Diploma Program, Faculty of Letters and Fine Arts, Sebelas Maret University Surakarta. This final project is written based on the job training which has been done by the writer in SD Negeri 02 Bejen Karanganyar. This final project discusses about all activities of English teaching and learning process in SD Negeri 02 Bejen Karanganyar. The objective of the final project report is to describe the use of multimedia to teach vocabulary to the fourth grade students of elementary school of SDN 02 Bejen Karanganyar to learn English language. The subject of this final project was the fourth grade students. The final project describes the lesson plan and some techniques of teaching such as: the use of Indonesian, repetition, English song and pictures. The class activities consist of four steps based on the lesson plan that was made before, i,e. building knowledge of field, modeling, joint construction and individual construction. Based on the job training, it can be concluded that there are several steps to be done or prepared in the teaching and learning process of teaching English to the fourth grade students at SD Negeri 02 Bejen Karanganyar. The vocabulary material must be prepared by the writer based on the syllabus to make a lesson plan. The large pictures can be presented in front of the class by using LCD projector. It makes the students easier to pay attention of the material because the pictures are big and colored, besides that, by using multimedia, English video songs can be provided by the writer as learning aid. The pictures provided in the class must be colored pictures and the songs must be cheerful songs in order to make the students interested in the material. To improve the quality of English teaching and learning in SD Negeri 02 Bejen Karanganyar, it is suggested that the headmaster provides good facilities to support students in the English teaching and learning process and the headmaster must have a good cooperation with all teachers with all, especially the English teacher. ix

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Backround In this era, multimedia is not something taboo for everyone in this world. People in every length of time in existence know about many kinds of multimedia and the function of them. In education aspect, multimedia becomes aid that helps teacher in elementary school. It will make easier teacher to teach English especially to teach vocabulary, so that it will make English will develop effectively. Teacher who teaches the students studying English must understand and know how to operate the multimedia aid that develops in line with the era development. The point that makes multimedia becomes effective in teaching and learning is the audio-visual of its. Audio-visual in teaching and learning makes the class more interesting than ordinary class that does not use any aid, so that the students will pay attention with the material that is given by the teacher. It is because the concentration of the students is aimed at the aids that are used. Teacher will be able to give English materials about vocabulary by pictures, songs, and videos. Audio-visual from the aids will be able to show a colored video and to perform sound that will make the students interested when they hear it. Aids that are used in teaching are Laptop/ PC (Personal Computer), LCD projector and speaker. 1

In short, the teacher must prepare the multimedia aids well in order to make the students who learn English can understand the vocabulary material which is conveyed by the teacher. Many pictures, songs and videos can be obtained by download from the internet or bookstore that provides material like these. This strategy will make the students interested in the material and they will focus on it. 4 CHAPTER II LITERATURE REVIEW 1. Teaching A. The Review of Teaching and Learning In, Hornby explains, lessons to student in a school, college, university, etc. (Hornby, 2005:1574). His definition about teaching is supported by Douglas H. Brown in his book Teaching by Principle: an Interactive Approach to Language Pedagogy (Brown, 2000:7). Teaching does not only give some information or materials to the students, but also makes the students comfortable when they try to understand the material in the classroom. The role of the teacher is guiding, facilitating, learning, enabling the students the same with their family. Jack C. Richards (1992:16), in his book entitled The Language Teaching Matrix products that offer teachers predetermined models of follow. Teaching depends upon the application of appropriate theory, the development of careful instructional designs and strategies, and the study of what actually happen statements, it can be concluded teaching is not only giving the material to the students, but also supporting them in 4

several ways or strategies to make them understand the materials that teacher gave. Teaching can be one of the key-activities in the teaching and learning process. A teacher needs to know a lot about the institution so far as the institution is involved with its teaching. Besides, the teacher must know about the time, length of time, frequency, physical conditions, syllabus, examinations, and restrictions. a. Time, length of time, frequency. A teacher must know the time, how long, and how often classes take place. It is very important because it will affect all plans. b. Physical conditions. A teacher needs to know what physical condition existing in the place that they are going to teach. When planning something, a teacher must consider the condition of the chairs and the white board, the brightness of the lighting, the size of the room, the aids that will be used, etc.

c. Syllabus. A teacher should be familiar with the syllabus for level that is being taught. d. Examinations. It is also extremely important to know what type of exam that the students will have to take since major responsibilities of the teacher are to try and ensure that the students are successful in the examinations. e. Restrictions A teacher should be aware of any restrictions imposed by the institution upon their teaching. Apart from the obvious restrictions of physical size a shape of the classroom, there might also be other limitations such as class size, availability of aids and physical conditions (Harmer, 1991:261) In addition, there are some issues a the teacher should know. 1. A teacher should make his/her lesson interesting. 2. A teacher should love his/her job. 3. A teacher should have his/her own personality. 4. A teacher should have lots of knowledge. 5. A good teacher is an entertainer in a positive sense, not a negative sense. (Harmer, 1998:1-2)

2. Learning In the book of Hornby explains Learning is gaining knowledge or skill by studying, from rnby, 2005:874) Teaching cannot be defined apart from learning. According to Brown, there are some definitions about learning. 1. 2. Learning is retention of information or skill. 3. Retention implies storage systems, memory, cognitive organization. 4. Learning involves active, conscious focus on and acting upon events outside or inside the organism. 5. Learning is relatively permanent but subject to forgetting. 6. Learning involves some form of practice, perhaps reinforced practice. 7. Learning is a chance in behavior. (Brown, 2000:7) Learning is acquiring or getting knowledge of a subject or a skill by study, experience, or instruction. Learning is acquisition or getting, learning is retention of information or skill, and learning involves some form or practice, perhaps reinforce practice.

From the statements above, it can be concluded that in learning there would be a process of getting or acquiring knowledge or skill. As a result, there would be memorizing of information or skill and behavior that change within the learner. B. Young Learners According to Scott and Yterberg, young learners mean children from the first year of formal schooling, between five and ten or eleven years of age. (Scott and Yterberg, 1990:1) There is a big difference between what children of five can do and what children of ten can do. We need to know about the characteristics of the average children which are relevant for language teaching. Scott and Yterberg divide children into two main groups; five to seven years old and eight to ten years old. 1. The characteristics of children of five to seven years old. a. Their own understanding comes through hands, eyes and ears. b. They have very short attention and concentration span. c. They sometimes are often happy in playing. d. They do not always understand what adults are talking about.

e. They love to play and learn best when they are enjoying themselves. Five to seven years old are all at level one. The children world at this level is different from that of adult. Children do not always understand what adults talk about and adults do not always understand what children talk about. 2. The characteristics of children of eight to ten years old. a. They ask questions all the time. b. They are able to make some decision about their own learning. c. Th doing. d. They have a developed sense of fairness about what happens in the e. They are able to work with others and learn from others. (Scott and Yterberg, 1990:3) In fact, the young learners are different from secondary or adult learners. They are enthusiastic learners and they need physical movement and activities to stimulate their thinking. After knowing the characteristics of the young learners, we can know how to teach young learners. A t rely on the spoken language

only. A teacher will need to have several aids that will help him/her to teach them. Besides, a teacher also needs to make variety in the classroom. For example; variety of activity, variety of pace, variety of organization and variety of voice. A teacher should use familiar situations and familiar activities, for example repeating stories, rhymes, etc. C. Multimedia In the book of Pengembangan Media Pembelajaran, Ngadino explains Media adalah segala sesuatu yang dapat digunakan untuk menyalurkan pesan dari pengirim ke penerima pesan sehingga dapat merangsang pikiran, perasaan, perhatian, dan minat siswa sedemikian rupa sehingga proses belajar terjadi (Ngadino, 2009:11). In the education field, multimedia can be the effective way to teach students in school or university. It will affect the concentration and the motivation of the students to learn English vocabulary material. There are general characteristics that are included in its every limitation. a. The education media has physical definition that is known as hardware.

b. The education media has non-physical definition that is known as software. c. The education media stressing is focused on audio and visual. d. The education media has aid definition in learning process inside the class or outside the class. e. The education media can be used to communicate and interact between teacher and students in teaching and learning process. f. The education media can be used in big class (radio, television), big group and small group (film, slide, video, OHP) or individual (module, computer, radio-tape/cassette, video recorder). g. Behavior, attitude, organization, strategy and management that is connected with a knowledge practice. (Ngadino, 2009:15) In the book of Televisi Sebagai Media Pendidikan, Darwanto explains, the use of audio-visual is presented to improve the effectiveness and the efficient of teaching and learning process, so that children can develop their mind. The result of some researches shows that the teaching and learning process by using audio-visual can improve the effectiveness of teaching and learning process by 20- Darwanto, 2009:101)

From the statements above, it can be concluded that the use of multimedia especially audio-visual can help students improve their concentration and interest in the learning process. Students will understand the material that is given by the teacher more effectively and they will have better understanding in vocabulary in English.
