Applicability of the Prospectus This IBMS Prospectus, together with the Course Outlines and the Student Charter form the Education and Exam Regulations, in Dutch: de onderwijs en examenregeling, de OER. All of these documents are digitally available via intranet, Mijn Hanze (access www.mijnhanze.nl > organisatie > International Business School), part of the Hanze Electronic Learning Environment (HELO) used by the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen. Student Charter Examination Regulations (Chapter 4) IBMS Prospectus & Course Outlines It is meant to provide a reference document regarding procedures specific to education at the International Business School (IBS) and more generally to the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen as a whole. It describes the study programme, International Business and Management Studies (IBMS), offered by IBS in English and the various rules and regulations that govern all aspects of studies at IBS. Where necessary, it also provides guidance and advice to students and staff on a variety of topics. The Internationale Betriebswirtschaft (BW) programme is an official part of the IBMS programme therefore, the Internationale Betrriebswirtschaft Prospectus (Studienfürer) is completely in line with this IBMS Prospectus. All official communication supplied by the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen and the International Business School (IBS) is done via the Hanze Electronic Learning Organisation (HELO) and intranet Mijn Hanze (access www.mijnhanze.nl). This up-to-date information is easily accessible and each student is required to have read the information published there. Please be aware that some rules and regulations apply specifically to First Year students as opposed to Main Phase students (years two, three and four). This edition of the IBMS Prospectus, 0-0, applies to all students who are registered in the academic year 0-0. Changes to the programme, as compared with former editions of the Prospectus, do not affect the former study results of students: credits acquired in previous years remain valid. Corrections to any errors and omissions found in this Prospectus, as well as updates and changes made during the academic year 0-0 will be published in the IBS Bulletin via intranet, Mijn Hanze (access www.mijnhanze.nl > organisatie > International Business School). 5

Introduction In 987, the International Business School (IBS) began as a result of the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen awareness of the importance of internationalisation. Since then, IBS has grown from a project into one of the largest schools at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen. The number of students attending yearly has increased from approximately 00 in the beginning, to over 000 today, of whom 60% are from outside the Netherlands. It was felt that the open-mindedness in the Netherlands concerning economics and cultures was not adequately reflected at that time in the education offered by the so-called Faculty of Economics and that business education in the Netherlands should develop a more global perspective. On the basis of a study carried out in 987, the Board of Executives of the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen decided to establish the International Business Studies (IBS) programme in 988. A modular structure was chosen, so that it would be easier for foreign students to join. An interesting feature of the programme was that all students had to spend an entire year abroad, which led to the creation of an initial partner network of co-operating schools from around the world. In September 996, IBS commenced the programme Betriebswirtschaft, a German-language version of the English track Finance Specialisation. This programme is described in a separate Prospectus titled Studienführer. During the academic year 999-000, IBS developed, in close co-operation with business organisations and a large group of other IBS institutions, a new professional profile called International Business and Management Studies (IBMS). This led to the implementation of a new structure of the programme: The first two years of IBMS became similar for all fields of study. In the third year of the programme, students studied outside their home country (abroad) and participated in an internship abroad. During their fourth year, students chose a specialisation. In 00, higher education in the Netherlands was reorganised into a bachelor-master structure. The purpose of this was to ensure comparable diplomas in all 9 European countries. It was the final level of competencies, not the duration of the programme that made up the criteria for international comparability. Consequently, students graduating from the International Business School receive a bachelor of Business Administration (BBA). Within the context of this multi-disciplinary BBA, students are able to choose a specialisation in either Marketing/International Management, International Finance and Accounting or Betriebswirtschaft. To supply the growing global tourism market, IBS developed a new IBMS Specialisation: International Travel and Tourism in September 00 however, for students starting IBMS in 0-0, this specialisation is no longer offered in IBS. In 005, it was decided to separate the Marketing/International Management specialisation by offering both an International Marketing and an International Management specialisation. IBS implemented a complete change in its curriculum, in September 004, emphasising competence-based learning and continuous assessment into its programme. At the same time, the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) was integrated. In addition, the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen also implemented the reorganisation of its faculties into schools. IBS is one of the 9 schools within the Hanze and the Executive Board chose IBS to be one of its schools as an engine of internationalisation within the Hanze. More major curriculum improvements were made in September 0 and can be found in detail in this Prospectus. For students who started with the Main Phase in the academic year 00-0, the setup of the specialisations in year four as described in this Prospectus are subject to change and therefore will be different for students who start in the Main Phase as of September 00 (or later). 7

. Organisation of the International Business School The International Business and Management Studies (IBMS), offered by the International Business School (IBS) is a four year, full-time undergraduate, international programme which is formally accredited by the Dutch government (NVAO). This international study programme focuses on cultural differences and are an integral part of the programme. The curriculum is structured so that learning content, tasks and projects are up to date and reflect what happens in today s international business world. This includes practical assignments for companies/ entrepreneurs when possible. Upon completion, graduates receive a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in one of the specialisations mentioned below: International Marketing International Finance & Accounting International Management International Travel & Tourism (Only available for students who started their studies before September 00) Internationale Betriebswirtschaft (for detailed information regarding this specialisation please see the separate Prospectus: Studienführer). Exam Board (EB) and Admissions Committee.. Exam Board (EB) Every school of the Hanze has an Exam Board which is responsible for exam results and the proper conduct of affairs during assessments and exams. The Exam Board comprises the following IBS Staff members: Froukje Wijma (Chairman), Ilse Dollekamp and Lucie Rugers. The Exam Board contact is: ibsexamboard@org.hanze.nl. Exam Board Meetings Exam Board meetings take place weekly. Students who wish their case to be discussed in the Exam Board meeting must write a letter and submit it (on paper) to the Exam Board, via the IBS Info Desk. Emails regarding Exam Board matters sent to individual Exam Board members, the Secretary or to other members of IBS staff will not be accepted as a formal appeal. All appeal letters must be signed and dated. Appeal letters to the Exam Board must fulfill the following requirements*: a. Must be received by the deadline as stated above; b. Explain your case/complaint clearly and understandable in English or German (BW students only) c. Explain your request and provide a specific action or solution. For example: What do you want exactly and why do you think you deserve it?** d. Refer to the rule/regulation in the IBMS Prospectus, student charter or elsewhere which you think applies in your case. Include a copy of the rule. e. Contain accurate and up-to-date copies of all relevant supporting documents, copies of emails from teachers or student counselors, your grade list etc. f. If your case depends upon extenuating circumstances (see the Student Charter available on MijnHanze for details) you must request that the student counselor sends written confirmation of this to the Exam Board confirming that these extenuating circumstances have influenced your study progress. Remember: if you are claiming extenuating circumstances you must have spoken to a student counselor at the time the circumstances arose or your claim will not be accepted. *Appeal letters which fail to meet these requirements will be returned to you for completion before being dealt with by the Exam Board. **Please be aware that the Exam Board is only authorized to deal with appeals regarding those matters stated in the Student Charter (Appendix ). If a student does not agree with an existing rule, he/she should consult the IBS Management Team and not the IBS Exam Board. 9

.. Admissions Committee Each study programme has an Admissions Committee which is composed of at least three members, including the Chairman. The Chairman and other members of the Admissions Committee are appointed by the Dean from the staff members who are charged with teaching in the study programme(s) concerned. Appointments are for a period of three years. Outgoing members of the Admissions Committee are eligible for reappointment immediately, on nomination. The Admissions Committee advises the Dean on admission of students to study programmes.. Education Committee (EC) Each study programme of the Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen has an Education Committee (EC). The IBS Education Committee, (Study Programme Committee as referred to in Article 0.c of the Higher Education and Research Act) is composed of four (Main Phase) students and four lecturers representing all of the IBMS specialisations. . Competencies and Educational Qualifications The Framework IBMS Competencies (detailed overview can be found in Appendix ) is in accordance with the HBO standard (procedure HBO council, November 00). Ethical and corporate responsibility Competency: level specification For the specification of the competencies the level descriptors are provided in the following general format: Level : The ability to execute a simple task. The student has the basic knowledge and skills to apply the competency with guidance in a limited context. In most institutions this is learned in the first year. Level : The student can apply the competency independently in a relatively clearly arranged situation. This will normally be at the end of year or the placement period. Level : The student can apply the competency independently in a complex situation with complete control of the required skills (Bachelor-level). Level 4: Flexible application of the competency in complex situations. The student can evaluate his or her competency and can support others when applying their competencies (Master-level).

Dublin descriptors and Bachelors Degree Standard versus IBMS competencies In order to guarantee the end level of the IBMS programme, a matrix comparing the Dublin descriptors and the new IBMS competences has been developed. This matrix serves three purposes to make clear:. How the IBMS competences link to the Dublin Descriptors to prove that the general criteria of a Bachelor s degree are covered.. Hour Year. Programme Structure and Planning. Structure of the Programme and Scheduling The IBMS programme is a four-year, full-time study. Each academic year consists of four study periods (two study periods per semester). In the first and second year, semesters are offered concurrently and/or interchangeably, so that students may start with either semester. The language and project modules are semester-based. Lectures are always to start on the exact time mentioned in the schedule below. IBS plans lectures of 60 minutes each, of which 50 minutes are used for classes and 0 minutes for a break. In case of a one-hour class, the 0-minute break is always at the end. In case of a two- hour class, teachers can decide where to put the two 0-minute breaks: either a 0-minute break during the lecture or a 0-minute break at the end of the second lecture hour. . The IBMS Undergraduate Programme Major and Minor Structure The contents of all modules of the IBMS Programme are described in detail in the separate Course Outlines for Year, Year, Year 4 and the Year Abroad Information which can all be found on intranet, Mijn Hanze (access www.mijnhanze.nl > organisatie > International Business School). Credits & assessment schedules can be found in a later chapter. A general overview of the course content can be found below. Major and Minor Structure Upon graduation, all students of the International Business School obtain the major: International Business and Management Studies. IBS offers the following five specialisations in the academic year 0-0: International Marketing International Finance & Accounting International Management International Travel & Tourism (Only available for students who started their studies before September 00) Internationale Betriebswirtschaft (for detailed information regarding this specialisation please see the separate Prospectus, Studienführer) Minors Next to a major, students can get a minor. Please note: the rule described below is only applicable for students who started their studies in September 005 or later. Upon fulfilment of the Study Abroad requirements, IBS students can get a Minor " Business and Culture in (country where they studied)". If the student did a thematically unified study programme, different from his/her specialisation at IBS, while abroad (i.e. at least 0 EC were done in one knowledge area for instance International Marketing) the student may apply for the Minor "International Marketing " (which then comes in place of the Minor "Business and Culture in.."). The same applies to "International Finance", "International Travel and Tourism" and "International Management". Please note that a minor cannot be the same as your specialisation at IBS!! IBS can never guarantee beforehand that it is possible to actually study a certain minor at the institution abroad. There are too many variables that we have no control over: such as changes of study plans and curricula, schedule changes etc. What is possible beforehand, of course, is to have your study plan checked for the possibility of earning a certain minor (other than Business and Culture in..). To obtain approval for this students should send the proposed study plan, Course Outlines and a note from the IBS Study Abroad Supervisor (responsible for the school you will be studying at), stating his/her opinion on the matter to the Study Abroad co-ordinator. Please be aware that once you arrive, you may find out that you have to make changes in your study plan. In that case you can do the same again: ask the Study Abroad co-ordinator and always include the opinion of the IBS Study Abroad Supervisor. Please note that the credits have to be earned while abroad. Students with a nationality that is not Dutch are allowed to do their Study Abroad semester in the Netherlands. They can either stay at IBS to earn a minor in European Business (5th semester) or take one of the minors offered by the other Hanze schools. In the DOP (Digitale Onderwijs Planner) all available minors are listed with a remark from IBS whether a minor is recommended or not. Students who take a minor at the Hanze but outside IBS should register for this minor in the DOP (Digitale Onderwijs Planner) in www.helo.hanze.nl. Students who take the IBS European Business minor should contact the Educational Support Staff member for year three. 6

. Minors offered to non-ibms students (Shopping Students) Shopping students who register for IBS modules via the DOP (Digitale Onderwijs Planner) will be registered in Progress WWW by the IBS Educational Support Staff once their SOK (studieovereenkomst) has been approved by the Academic Advisor of their own school (not IBS). In Progress WWW shopping students can find in which class they are scheduled. Shopping students have only one resit opportunity which is the first time the exam is offered following their study semester at IBS. .4 Articulation Programme IBS developed Articulation programmes with specific partner universities and colleges namely Audentes University, Tallinn in Estonia, BIB in Germany, Higher National Diploma in Business in China and Jianghan University, Wuhan in China. Students in these programmes first study in their home country up to the entry level of Year of the IBS bachelor programme. These students then come to IBS in Year where they enter the Harmonisation Semester (see Table of Credits later in chapter 6 for more details). .5 Compulsory Attendance The IBS Course Outlines which are available on intranet, Mijn Hanze (access www.mijnhanze.nl > organisatie > International Business School) contain information regarding compulsory attendance. See chapter 8. for more information about class attendance rules..6 Course Outlines The contents of all modules of the IBMS Programme are described in detail in the separate Course Outlines for Year 4 including information about the year abroad information which can all be found on intranet, Mijn Hanze (access www.mijnhanze.nl > organisatie > International Business School). Together with this Prospectus and the Student Charter, the Course Outlines are an official part of the Education and Exam Regulations, in Dutch: Onderwijs- en Examenregeling,: OER )..7 Study Plans and Class Registration Students must make a study plan except for incoming (newly enrolled) first year students. It is the responsibility of the student to appropriately complete the study plan. Both the student and the Academic Advisor are required to sign the study plan. A student is allowed to attend the modules and/or exams mentioned on the study plan once the student has the signature of the Academic Advisor. When a study plan is required, detailed instructions on how to complete a study plan will be communicated to students via e-mail. Guidelines for all students: - Year (newly enrolled) students do not need to make a study plan. - Students who have not obtained all 60 EC but at least 40 EC from the first year after one year of studies (and did not receive an NBSA) and want to enter the main phase after their first year of enrolment, need an approved study plan which must be made by the student and approved by their First Year Academic Advisor at the beginning of the semester. Without this approved study plan, IBS Management reserves the right to remove students from the classes. See below under First year resitters module registration. - Students who stay at IBS for their study abroad (Semester 5) need to contact the Educational Support (ibsadmin@org.hanze.nl) before September st. - Direct second year entry students (applicants coming from outside of IBS for the first time) will be registered in Progress WWW by the Educational Support Staff for the second year based on a study plan approved by their Academic Advisor. - Students returning from their year abroad and starting in September in year 4 need to hand in their study plan to the Educational Support (ibsadmin@org.hanze.nl) before July 5th and students returning in the February semester before January st. If a student entering year 4 has not obtained all credits from year two or three, the missing credits may be added to the credits to be obtained in year four. However, students may take up to a maximum of 5 EC per semester only. - Students that have a backlog at any time during their studies, need to contact their Academic Advisor to make a repair study plan which needs to be signed by both the student and Academic advisors submitted to the Educational Support at least weeks before the start of the period. Students will be registered for the respective modules via Progress WWW by the Educational Support Staff based on the approved study plan. Registration for modules based on the approved study plan in Progress WWW is automatically a enrolment for the exams belonging to these modules during the same period. If a student wants to take a resit, he/she need to enrol for all resits him/herself via Progress WWW. Please see Chapter 8.4 for more details about resits. Important: Students are responsible for checking their registration and enrolment via Progress WWW to make sure they are enrolled for the appropriate modules and exams. Students have to enrol themselves for resit exams at all times. Students have the right to attend a module only once per year. The Management Team has the right to cancel a module or offer the module in an alternative way if the number of students is not sufficient.

First Year Resitters Module Registration Students who have (after one year of enrolment) more than 40EC (European Credits) in the first year and did not receive a Negative Binding Study Advice (see Chapter 7) are allowed to take Main Phase modules next to the modules from the first year they still need to pass. The total number of credits that the student is allowed to take is limited to a maximum of 5 EC in the first semester of his second year of enrolment. If a student, for example, still has 5 EC open from the first year, he/she can take up to 0 EC from the main phase in the first semester of the second year of enrolment in addition to the first year credits. Next to this the following must be taken into account: - Students must fulfil the prerequisites for each second year module. - Students begin with either the third or the fourth semester and can follow only modules from that semester (two periods in total; + or +4). - Students may take up to a maximum of 5 EC per semester only including missing credits from previous semesters. Shopping students (students from other Hanze University schools taking IBS module(s)) Shopping students who register for IBS modules via the DOP (Digitale Onderwijs Planner), will be registered in Progress WWW by the Educational Support Staff once their SOK has been approved by the Academic Advisor from their own school (not IBS). In Progress WWW shopping students can find in which class they are scheduled. Students can find in which class they are scheduled in Progress WWW. The IBS Management reserves the right to change a student s registration prior to the start of classes due to class capacity related decisions. IBS Students have the final responsibility to check in Progress WWW before the start of classes whether they are registered for the correct modules as defined in their approved study plan

4. IBMS Curriculum 4. First Year The first year of study lays the foundation for further study. Each subject is designed to provide students with the broad knowledge and basic skills they will need for more specific subjects studied in the Main Phase. After a one-week compulsory introduction, the programme continues with the modules listed in the table below. Languages are taught during both semesters: students can choose one language from Dutch, German, French or Spanish. In each study semester students participate in a project. Within both the Consultancy and the Business Plan Project students cooperate in small groups to find answers to complex, practical business-related problems. These small, multicultural groups prepare students for successful communication and cooperation in international business. Professional Development Training provides academic guidance and teaches study skills. 4.. Honours Programme Hanze University of Applied Sciences, Groningen offers additional challenges to outstanding students. Students who possess potential to excel not only academically, but professionally and personally, can apply for admission to the IBS Honours programme. Applications for this programme will be assessed by the Honours admissions committee in January and June of each year. The honours programme commences in the first semester of the main phase of the IBMS/BW programme and continues for the duration of the study programme. The honours programme consists of 0 EC in addition to those earned as part of the regular bachelor's degree programme and is to be followed concurrent with the regular IBS study periods. The honours programme is divided into three different content lines: Professional Depth (0EC): deepening understanding in the area of International Business, based on the students future professional goals; Interdisciplinary (5 EC): broadening the participants awareness and ability to integrate knowledge from disciplines outside the scope of the IBS programme; Community (5 EC): focusing on the student s essential contribution to society at large, both as an individual and as part of the Honours community. Activities occur either in groups and independently. Some module require attendance while others are planned according to the student s individual schedules. Honours students will have the flexibility to create learning opportunities specifically geared to their own professional goals. Honours Curriculum Some portions of the programme are required for all Honours students and some aspects will be tailored to the individual student. Participants will work together with their IBS Honours Advisor to create a programme based on their own professional interests and personal needs. All participants must complete a total of 0EC during their main phase at IBS. 4.. Third Year - Year Abroad In today s market, the person who is well travelled and knowledgeable about global issues will have the competitive edge. Employers and graduate schools are looking for confident, mature candidates with a global mindset, proficient in a second language, with the ability to adapt to new situations. Therefore, all IBS students have to spend a full Year Abroad, one semester studying at one of the IBS partner universities and one semester doing a placement at a company abroad. The purpose of the two semesters abroad is to increase students exposure to, and experience of foreign countries. Through both studying and working in a foreign country, students will develop a deep understanding of the country, its language, culture, inhabitants, economy and ways of doing business. The rules for study and placement abroad are the same for all enrolled students, specifically: Dutch students: Must do their study semester in one of the foreign IBS partner schools and must do their placement outside the Netherlands; Foreign students: May stay in the Netherlands or go abroad for both the study and the placement semester as long as it is not in their home country. Foreign students remaining in the Netherlands for their Study Abroad may enrol in the IBS International semester or any other approved study programme. Study semester The study semester will be spent at one of the IBS partner schools where students have the possibility to study those subjects that are not offered in the IBS programme. Students who plan to start and/or complete their Study Abroad semester during the academic year 0-0 should refer to the Study Abroad Course Outlines (SAB + SAB) as well as the related Personal Development Training (see Course Outline for more specific information). The proposed study programme (course selection) has to be equivalent to 0 credits; this includes credit for Personal Development Training 5 in IBS. Courses offered by partner schools with similar content to the compulsory IBMS courses will not be approved and if indeed taken, students will not receive an exemption from taking the compulsory IBMS course. Students may discover upon arrival at the partner school that the defined study programme they had in mind is not possible. Scheduling constraints, unexpected changes to academic programmes, or course prerequisites can result in changes to be made to the student s study plan. Students are expected to select other courses, and propose the changes to their IBS supervisor within the first week of their start of class at the host institution. More details on the Study Abroad semester and the relevant procedures and regulations are available on Blackboard (access www.helo.hanze.nl > Blackboard > Courses > Year Abroad Study and Placement) Double Degree Programme IBS students who decide to take part in the Double Degree (DD) programme are able to obtain two bachelor degrees within the normal four-year programme by studying for two semesters at a partner institution abroad instead of one. The Double Degree programme is based partly on the IBS Main Phase programme and partly on the programme of the participating partner institutions. Double Degree students may be able to obtain a specialisation while studying at the partner institute. Minors cannot be granted except for the general minor in which students can earn the Minor " Business and Culture in (country where they studied)". The Double Degree Programme is generally based on the following study route. Please note that this is only indicative. Placement Students are responsible to find and secure a suitable placement position in a company outside their home country. One of the IBS second year modules is designed to help students make an adequate resume/cv and application letter, as well as to prepare a placement search strategy. Make use of this module! IBS also regularly releases placement offers, previous student reports and shared experiences of fellow students. In addition, IBS will provide assistance if a student runs into problems (as long as the problems are not of the students own making). The duration of your placement should be the equivalent of a full-time workload (i.e. 5-40 hours per week) for a period between five and six months. Students who plan to start and/or complete their placement abroad semester during the academic year 0-0 should refer to the placement abroad Course Outlines (PLM + PLM) as well as the related Personal Development Training 6 for more specific information. Procedures Year Abroad procedures for Permission to go on Study Abroad (PTGS) and Permission to go on Placement (PTGP) for students who started their Main Phase studies before September 0: please refer to the Prospectus 00-0 which is available via intranet, Mijn Hanze (access www.mijnhanze.nl > organisatie > International Business School > Regulations IBMS and BW). Year Abroad procedures for Permission to go on Study Abroad (PTGS) and Permission to go on Placement (PTGP) for students who started their Main Phase studies in the academic year 0-0. Students are allowed to go abroad only when permission is given, i.e. when students meet the criteria as specified below. Obtaining PTGS/PTGP allows a student to start the Year Abroad (Study Abroad or Placement Abroad). Not obtaining PTGS/PTGP can create a serious study delay, as it means that until the PTGS/PTGP criteria are met, a student will not be allowed to go abroad. PTGS is given when a student Has formally completed the first year; Received 4 European credits (EC) in the second year including the (new) Language 5 or 6 (LAN 5 or 6) module: IBVHLAN; For Study Abroad, there are fixed deadlines before which a student must have received his PTGS. For students planning their Study Abroad in February, the PTGS must be obtained before the st October proceeding the start of the Study Abroad in February. For students planning their Study Abroad in September, the PTGS must be obtained before the st of March proceeding the start of the Study Abroad in September. PTGP is given when a student Has formally completed the first year; Received 40 European credits (EC) in the second year including three out of the four new Language modules (IBVH - LAN5, LAN6, LAN7 and LAN8). For placement, PTGP can be given to students at anytime, when a student who fulfils these criteria applies for it. A student can start looking for a placement before receiving his/her PTGP. PTGP will be required when the student starts their placement. All students planning to start their Year Abroad are required to keep themselves informed by reading the information available on Blackboard (access www.helo.hanze.nl > Blackboard > Courses > Year Abroad Study and Placement). Students in the Articulation programme do not need to obtain Permission to Go Abroad as they are all at the third year level when entering IBS. Year Abroad procedures for Study Abroad Allocation System Due to the fact that the number of study places at the most popular partner institutions is limited, IBS needs a selection system that allows each student a reasonable chance to obtain a study place of their preference.
