EMAES THE EXECUTIVE MASTER S PROGRAMME IN EUROPEAN STUDIES, 60 HP

Facing Europe s challenges Energy, migration, employment, sustainable development, cultural differences and security are examples of key challenges facing Europe in the future. Important questions that arise include what happens to European cohesion and democratic values when prosperity gaps increase; does Europe continue to be globally competitive, or does it become a pioneer in sustainable development?; how do conflicts on the borders of Europe, and the dependence on oil and gas give rise to new security risks? These challenges demand skillful decision-making, as well as an open, analytical, and critical public debate. It is becoming increasingly important to invest in research and education, as well as in further collaboration between policy-makers, the public, and universities. Since the challenges facing Europe have such complexity, the need for multidisciplinary research and education is greater than ever before. EMAES is an academic programme that lives up to the demands of a changing European landscape, as it is firmly grounded in a complete multidisciplinary academic milieu, which successfully combines research, teaching, and outreach. 2

A council of prominent members of the field is tied to the programme, including Commissioner Cecilia Malmström. Why European studies? EMAES is an academic programme which, as a whole, prepares students with the knowledge needed to address the challenges of our contemporary and future society. It is taught by teachers and researchers at the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence at the University of Gothenburg. In addition to this, a council of prominent members of the field is tied to the programme, including Commissioner Cecilia Malmström. The programme is cross-disciplinary, with teachers from many different disciplines throughout the university. EMAES is designed for students who wish to remain professionally active while studying, with a reduced speed of studying. The majority of the programme is taught online, so that students do not need to relocate to Gothenburg. Students are expected to come to Gothenburg on seven occasions to participate in social events and meet their fellow classmates. Each year a small group of students will be admitted to the programme from different fields but with a common interest in improving their knowledge of European affairs, as well as their competence and ability to apply new analytical methods and practical experiences to their work. To take advantage of this the courses are designed to allow students to draw upon their particular expertise and to learn from each other. Programme Structure The Executive Master s in European Studies (60hec) is a one year degree programme which is taught part-time over two years. It comprises courses on the theories and methods of European research. One of the courses is semi-elective, allowing for thematic specialization. EMAES has an innovative approach to teaching research methods, with the majority of the methods teaching integrated into the other courses. Thus, as students learn the methods, they immediately get to apply them to relevant materials and questions. 3

Courses Research methods, 15 hec This course presents research approaches and offers practical training in research methods relevant to the field of European Studies. The first session of the course (5 hec) will focus on issues of general relevance to research in the social sciences, such as epistemology, research design, research ethics, and an overview of research methods. The remaining four sessions of the course will be integrated with the various substance courses of the programme in four 2.5 hec sessions. Cooperation and conflict in Europe 7,5 hec This course lays the theoretical foundation for a broad interdisciplinary and problem-oriented approach to European integration. The aim is to increase the theoretical understanding of legal, political, economic, and social aspects of the European integration process by looking at different disciplinary insights and understandings of current European phenomena. European market integration 7,5 hec This course addresses the challenges of integrating different national market systems into one single market without formally integrating the respective social systems. The main problems related to the processes of enlargement and integration the widening and deepening of European cooperation will be outlined and analysed. Various examples of how to best understand and deal with these challenges will be addressed. Europe in the world, 7,5 hec This course provides the opportunity to gain a multidisciplinary understanding of the European Union s role in the world and draws on a range of approaches in the social sciences and the humanities. It provides for an assessment of the international significance of European integration, the impact of global developments on Europe, and the changing role of the EU in the new world order. Master thesis, 15 hec The final semester is dedicated to writing a master s thesis. Students will formulate, plan and complete a master s thesis in a given amount of time. Writing the master s thesis will develop students ability to plan and manage large projects, and to collect and analyse social science data to answer an original research question of relevance to European Studies. Environment and energy in European integration, 7,5 hec This course addresses and problematizes the EU s environmental and energy policy. First, the EU s legal foundation, the policy process, and the commitment to economic growth and integration of markets are analysed from an environmental perspective. This foundation and commitment create tension with environmental considerations, which is captured in the concept of sustainable development and the EU s commitment to this idea. One aim is to provide a thorough understanding of the vagueness of sustainable development and in the ways in which the concept is used by/in the EU. Social Europe, 7,5 hec This course seeks to examine the evolution and the future of European welfare states. It highlights European citizenship, i.e. rights and obligations, from a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective. Students will gain insights into the diversity of European social policies and policy instruments, current socio-economic developments, as well as sociodemographic trends. The course addresses and problematizes European social policy and explores the changing nature of the European social model. 4

Why EMAES? Your job requires you to deal with the complex issues of the contemporary world. Perhaps you work with issues such as energy management, migration, security, the labor market, or one of the countless other areas affected by European integration. You already hold a bachelor s degree, for example in social sciences, humanities, economics, law, or engineering, but would like to further your skills and gain a deeper understanding of Europe and the European Union. At the same time you would like to carry on working while you study. You would value being a part of an exclusive network of highly skilled professionals with a common interest in Europe. If this description sounds like you, then EMAES might be for you. EMAES courses present research approaches and offer practical training in research methods relevant to the field of European Studies. The courses are designed pedagogically so that students own professional experiences are woven into the curriculum. The programme is structured as follows: Fall 2016 Research Methods Session 1 Cooperation and Conflict in Europe + Research Methods Session 2 Spring 2017 European Market Integration + Research Methods Session 3 Environment and Energy in European Integration Part 1 + Research Methods Session 4 OR Social Europe Part 1 + Research Methods Session 4 Fall 2017 Environment and Energy in European Integration Part 2 OR Social Europe Part 2 Europe as a Global Actor + Research Methods Session 5 Spring 2018 Master s Thesis 5

About European Studies The Centre for European Studies (CES) is a multi-disciplinary collaboration between nine different subject areas spread across eight departments and three faculties at the University of Gothenburg. In 1999, researchers from the University of Gothenburg, who were focusing on Europe, took the initiative of starting what was to become the European Studies Programme. The Centre for European Studies European integration affects economic, legal, political and social conditions, which means that European Studies is an interdisciplinary field by nature. For this reason, the Centre for European Studies (CES) was created. Today CES organizes interdisciplinary programmes at both the bachelor and master levels, including double degree tracks in collaboration with Konstanz University and Fudan University. CES is located at the Department of Political Science. The academic competence of the CES teaching staff draws upon economics, the humanities, law and the social sciences. In order to strengthen ties between the various disciplines, the Europakunskapskollegiet was created in 2014. This group consists of one teacher from each of the disciplines, and is tasked with, among other things, continuing an on-going discussion on the meaning and content of European Studies as a discipline. The group also makes up the core of the group of teachers who assess bachelor and master-level theses. REGU The Council for European Studies CES also has its own think-tank called REGU the Council for European Studies, whose prominent members include among others, EU-Commissioner Cecilia Malmström, Deputy Secretary General in charge of Economic and Global Issues, EEAS Christian Leffler, Head of Unit, International Unit, Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions, Jerker Stattin, and CEO and owner of Accuracy AB, as well as a senior executive experienced in fields such as strategy, logistics, and environmental affairs, Malin Persson. REGU strengthens CES ties to the society and the labor market, making sure that our programmes remain relevant and attractive. In fact, it was REGU that originally initiated EMAES. CES also cooperates closely with the Centre for European Research at the University of Gothenburg (CERGU). The teaching is therefore always connected to current international research within the field, and also supported by the CERGU International Advisory Board, whose prominent members include Anders Ahnlid, Permanent Representative of Sweden to the EU, Marise Cremona, Professor of European Law, European University Institute, Firenze, and Jan Beyers, Professor of Political Science, Antwerp Centre for Institutions and Multilevel Politics, University of Antwerp, among others. CES and CERGU together make up a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, which is awarded to complete academic environments with excellence in both teaching and research in the field of European Studies. 6
