Marvelous Motivational Math Centers ~ A Returning Developer ~ For further information contact Jennifer Shackelford North Wauchula Elementary 1120 N Florida Avenue Wauchula, FL 33873 863-773-2183 jshackelford@hardee.k12.fl.us n PROGRAM OVERVIEW This program was designed to help reinforce weekly skill as well as review the other math skills taught throughout the year so that students have a better understanding of math. This program can be used in any grade level by just changing the materials to grade level appropriate materials. This program will help motivate students learn important math skills. Marvelous Motivational Math Centers was used to review or remediate the weekly math skills which are being taught. This program was implemented in a third grade inclusion class with eighteen students. The classroom should be set up into four groups. Group 1 is a teacher led group were the teacher will us the promethean board (Smart Board or LCD projector & computer) to teach the students or review the weekly math skill. Group 2 students do mountain math as a small group. This group works to solve problems as a group from a pre-made chart with grade level appropriate math skills. Group 3 students will use Lakeshore Math Centers to practice the math skill for the week. Group 4 will practice the skill of the week on the computer using your schools math textbook program or some other program that is provided by your school. (Example Study Island, Math Facts in a Flash, or www.ixl.com) Marvelous Motivational Math Centers program can be used as a year long math centers program or as a crunch time to study for the FCAT. This program allows students review math skills and practice skills that they are struggling with. Student growth will be measured by teacher observation of participation in classroom activities using a program rubric. n OVERALL VALUE Marvelous Motivational Math Centers allow students mobility and differentiated learning according to their skill level. It allows students repetition practice of skills so students gain a firm understanding and allows the teacher time to remediate the skill. By using colored centers, computer activities, repetition practice, and small group instruction every child will be able to pay more attention to math and therefore enrich their education. This program is teacher friendly, because the materials can be easily adapted to students individual groups needs, as well as, to your weekly skill. n LESSON PLAN TITLES Telling Time Measurement Place Value Fractions Multiplication n MATERIALS Materials for each lesson are listed with each lesson plan. Overall materials budget including pricing and vendors follows the lesson plan. n ABOUT THE DEVELOPER Jennifer Shackelford has a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. She has third grade for four years and fifth grade for four years. Currently, she is teaching third grade at North Wauchula Elementary School in Hardee County. This is her second Developer Grant award. H H H

Lesson Plan No 1: Telling Time n SUBJECTS COVERED Math n GRADES Third n OBJECTIVES Students will be able to tell time and understand elapsed time. n SUNSHINE STATE STANDARDS MA.3.G.5.3 Tell time to the nearest minute and to the nearest quarter hour, and determine the amount of time elapsed. n MATERIALS time math center practice telling time and elapsed time flipchart mountain math chart and worksheet computer and math facts in a flash (or some kind of computer program) On day one in the teacher led group introduce the skill for the week using the flipchart. On day two review the flipchart and do the questions at the end of the flipchart with the expressions if you have them. On day three introduce elapsed time using flipchart. On day four review elapsed time flipchart and have students practice. On day five have students take a quiz to see if they understand telling time. The second group needs to be set up near the mountain math chart with a worksheet for every student (if there is not desk space have clipboards for students. The third group will need to be at the computer working on Math Facts in a Flash or some other computer program. Students should be put into four different groups based on the math skill level for the week. I have ten minute groups because I have forty minutes) One group should be set up as a teacher-led group by the promethean board (or some kind of board).
