Friday 6 th October Chilton Primary School Newsletter 3 One Childhood, One Chance - Together we make a difference Dear Parents and Carers, Thank you to everyone who made a food donation for our harvest assemblies this week. The display looked particularly beautiful this year and food items have been collected by the Salvation Army for distribution to those in our community in need. My thanks to the children for decorating their Porchlight houses so beautifully and to families for helping fill them with pennies. These donations have already been taken by the charity. Porchlight assist vulnerable and homeless people in our local area, particularly young people and so these donations, no matter how small are so important. In assembly on Monday, we considered the reasons for our collections and linked charitable donation back to our school value of Kindness. We have a quotation from Aesop on the wall at school: No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted and I think it really summarises the message and learning for children from our harvest festival assemblies. One of our school values is also Respect. We all understand that lives are busy and tensions can rise. I would however remind our parent community that the staff at Chilton are all dedicated and hard working professionals and they deserve to be spoken to in a manner reflecting this. We teach the children to treat people how they wish to be treated. This behaviour should be modelled by the whole school community. Can I therefore please ask our parent community to refrain from using bad language on our school site and to speak to members of staff in a respectful manner. Staff are always expected to speak to parents with courtesy and respect and I would ask that this be offered in return. I must stress that the vast majority of our school community does this and my thanks and appreciation go to you for your continued support. Sometimes difficult conversations need to be held. But choosing the right time and place for these conversations is important if we are to preserve good relationships and open, clear communication between staff and parents. This is absolutely essential to enable us to provide the best that we can for your children. With my very best wishes, Mrs Kate Law - Head of School Dates for your diary: Term 1 ends Friday 20 th October Half Term Monday 23 rd October to Friday 27 th October INSET DAY Monday 30 th October Term 2 begins Tuesday 31 st October Term 2 ends Wednesday 20th December at 2pm Other Inset days: Monday 19 th Feb Monday 16 th April Friday 29 th June Year 5 swimming continues Wednesdays this term Year 6 Secondary School applications must be made by 31 st October Individual School Photographs 12 th October

A NOTE FROM MISS CHESHIRE ON OUR NEW SPELLING SCHEME: At Chilton, this term we have started using a new scheme called Read, Write, Inc Spelling to teach the children from year 2 to 6 the spelling rules covered on the National Curriculum. It will also cover the common exception words. Spelling sessions are taught daily for 15 minutes. The children will cover a different spelling rule weekly, which is introduced through an engaging video. They will then undertake various activities with their talk partner or in groups to reinforce this rule. As part of this learning your child will have a log book. Each week your child will note the spellings that they have found hard to remember in their log book. Your child will bring their log book home every Friday. We would be really grateful if you could look at their log book regularly with them and practise those spellings at home, in order to reinforce their learning at school. Many Thanks, Miss Hannah Cheshire Assistant Head NEW ART PROJECTS: At the end of last year, I invited children to create art work for entitled Shades of Blue. This is now displayed in the office entrance and also in the Key Stage One learning zone. Our new project is ONE CHILDHOOD, ONE CHANCE. We invite children to create art work at home to represent our school vision. This will then be displayed in our external display boards. Please could the art work be returned to Mrs Law straight after half term on Tuesday 31 st October. From Term 2 onwards, we will have a special visitor in assemblies launching termly art projects! YEAR 6 PARENTS KENT TEST RESULTS If your child sat the Kent Test, results will be emailed to the address you supplied on registration after 4pm on Thursday 12 th October. They will be sent by post for the next day. You will also be able to access your child s scores using the log in you created at registration. Further information regarding headteacher appeals can be discussed with Mrs Law by making an appointment. A reminder that secondary school applications must be made by 31 st October.
