I was involved in a number of significant matters throughout my training and was trusted to directly interact with clients on many occasions. These opportunities improved my technical knowledge and provided me with the necessary soft skills to become a successful solicitor. Our Hong Kong office is big enough to accommodate a wide range of deals, yet our trainee-to-partner ratio is small enough for us to ask questions and for them to provide guidance. DEVELOPMENT. I was given ample opportunities to work on complex transactions that helped me develop my technical skills. I was offered invaluable learning opportunities to develop as a transactional lawyer and participated in various corporate issues, ranging from IPOs, public takeovers, mergers and acquisitions, and joint ventures to different fundraising deals. This immersive experience was extremely valuable, as it gave me direct exposure to clients in a challenging work environment. Ultimately, it forced me to quickly adapt to my surroundings and develop my skill set as a first-year trainee. DEANNA LIU TRAINEE 2015 TRAINING. The firm provides supplemental training seminars covering issues that lawyers often encounter in everyday practice. Trainees also benefit from the steady stream of updates and guidance on recent legal developments in Hong Kong and abroad. DEVELOPMENT. SUNNY TO TRAINEE 2015 TRAINING. Sidley offers a comprehensive training program for young professionals. In addition to our regular, on-thejob obligations, we attended practical training sessions on presentation techniques and public speaking. The firm also has a genuine open-door policy, and senior lawyers are always eager to answer any questions. DEVELOPMENT. For the first six months of my training contract, I worked directly with a partner from the Energy Mergers and Acquisitions group, receiving detailed feedback on all of my projects. I also observed how an experienced partner manages and interacts with clients on a daily basis, which are skills that I will need to develop in order to become an exceptional lawyer. DEVELOPMENT 7

My secondment to the London office was a rewarding experience, as I was able to participate in a variety of transactions in another jurisdiction. The new working environment, hands-on training and collegial culture made the secondment a meaningful part of my contract. TIFFANY FUNG TIFFANY FUNG TRAINEE 2015 Seconded to London office STEPHEN KENNEDY LONDON TRAINEE 2014 Seconded to Hong Kong office I spent six months on secondment to the Investment Funds and Banking teams in Hong Kong, which added an additional dimension to my training contract. JOIN US WE ARE LOOKING FOR TALENTED STUDENTS WHO: INTERNSHIP PROGRAM We run a Winter and Summer Internship Program to attract talented students for our Trainee Program. The program is designed to provide law students in their penultimate year at university with an invaluable insight into life at Sidley in Hong Kong. As an intern, you will meet lawyers from different practice areas and will participate in activities designed to broaden your understanding of all of the firm s practices in Hong Kong.
