!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! April, 2014 / s.s., l.h. Dear Members of the Biocenter!! In a few days from now we will celebrate Easter. We wish you (with this springtime picture that Siegi recently made in Maroc) HAPPY EASTER Yours LUDGER HENGST and ANDREAS VILLUNGER As you know, this Spring ANDREAS VILLUNGER and myself took over the positions as Vice-Director and Director of the Biocenter, respectively. At this point, we would like to thank once more LUKAS A. HUBER and CHRISTINE BANDTLOW for their immense work in getting this building and institution to become reality and to work and to forge the department architecturally and especially scientifically! I hope that you all enjoy this new work environment - which is one of the most beautiful university buildings in Austria. I wish you all success and joy for the coming next years. Please, assist me in constantly improving its performance by giving me input, criticism as well as new ideas. We also want to thank SIEGI very much for his constant support and his willingness to continue to plan, write, design and edit this newsletter. This issue covers the time from September 2013 until today. Enjoy reading it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#$#%&'%&'#(

Division of Biological Chemistry_Klaus Scheffzek TERESIA DUNZENDORFER from this Division, group KLAUS SCHEFFZEK, was one of the winners of the Childrens Tumor Foundation 2013 NF Conference Poster Session held in Monterey, CA, USA, June 8-11, 2013. Her poster was entitled: Molecular link between the RASopathic disorders NF1 and Legius Syndrome - defining the details MARKUS KELLER, also from this Division, group ERNST R. WERNER, received the Best Thesis Award 2013 from the Society of Austrian Chemists. In his thesis, MARKUS described new molecular findings in the severe Sjögren Larsson Syndrome (SLS) in which lipid alcohols derived from an inborn error-mutated enzyme intoxicate neuronal and other cells. Huber SIEGFRIED SCHWARZ from this Division was one of the 7 professors of this Medical University who contributed to the establishment of the first OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) held here in June 2013. He has introduced already some 15 years ago the practical course of VENIPUNCTION which was converted from an elective course to a mandatory course required for 4th semester medical students to aquire the Famulaturreife. Division of Cell Biology_Lukas Huber DAVID TEIS and LUKAS A. HUBER of this Division were invited speakers in an ALUMNI-I-MED Round Table discussion evening where they described the research situation on our University in general and on our CCB campus in particular. LUKAS praised among other factors our Biocenter Seminar as an important aspect of what he called campus culture. DAVID, described his experience with going abroad to work for some years as a postdoctoral fellow in a laboratory which does scientific work related, yet novel to the home laboratory. He also elaborated on funding agencies and related institutions. Tiroler Hochschultag 2013 MARIANNA BIADENE from the Division of Biological Chemistry_Klaus Scheffzek was one of the teachers at this important yearly event that brings together all academic institutions of Tyrol by being visited by thousands of school pupils eager to learn more about university studies, about science, about research, about future job possibilities. MARIANNA, assisted in part by SIEGFRIED SCHWARZ from the Division of Experimental Pathophysiology, introduced the youngsters into the exciting world of molecules, while PETER LOIDL from the Division of Molecular Biology explained the visitors the widerange possibilities of the diverse studies at our Medical University: Human Medicine, Dental Medicine, Molecular Medicine, Ph.D. study and Clinical Ph.D. study. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Education of the Educators On November 15, 2013 more than 40 teachers in Biology and Chemistry gathered at the CCB in order to receive first-hand informations on What is new? in these fields. It was a cooperative project between MUI and the Paedagogische Hochschule Tirol, initiated by Peter Loidl from the former and Dr. Helmuth Wachtler from the latter institution. ARNO HELMBERG gave a talk about The immune system of human beings, PETER LOIDL and HUBERTUS HAAS provided new insights into Immunization procedures, and LUKAS HUBER talked about Personalized cancer therapies.
