Application to Serve as a Volunteer Mentor/Tutor for 2017 2018 Virginia Beach READS Thank you for your interest in supporting Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) as a school volunteer with Virginia Beach READS! By submitting this application, you are stating that you understand there is a weekly commitment of a minimum of one hour at the assigned school to work with a struggling first grade reader for one academic year. All volunteers will report to a designated school staff member before and after tutoring sessions. Prior to the start of the program, each volunteer will receive two hours of training on how to effectively use materials and implement reading strategies. In addition, quarterly meetings will focus on student needs. We anticipate a program start date of October 2017. Before you begin this application, please note the following: School volunteers must always work under the direct supervision of school staff. A background check is required and will be paid for by Virginia Beach READS. Volunteers will complete paperwork at the training sessions. All new mentor/tutors must attend a training workshop. You will receive information on workshop dates and times later this summer.
