Mechanical and Structural Engineering and Materials - Master's Degree Programme Credits: 120 credits Level: Master's degree (2 years) Offered by: Faculty of and Technology, Department of Mechanical and Structural Engineering and Materials Grade name: Master i teknologi / sivilingeniør Full-time/Part-time: Full-time Language of instruction: Norwegian Introduction A master's degree in mechanical and structural engineering and materials science gives you competence much in demand. The program qualifies for jobs in a variety of industries, both offshore and land based, public and private. Admission requirements are a bachelor's degree in engineering with a solid foundation in structural engineering, materials technology and/or fluids power subjects. PROGRAM CONTENT, STRUCTURE AND PROGRESSION Consisting of a total 120 ECTS, the master program is made up of 20 ECTS basic methods courses (G) which consolidate and continue the mathematical and scientific foundation from the bachelor program. In the first semester there are 10 ECTS of "harmonizing" courses (H). Which courses that will be considered harmonizing depend on the students' background and will be decided on an individual basis at the beginning of the semester. Typically, students with a foundation in civil engineering must take courses in materials technology and thermodynamics while students with another specialization must choose steel and concrete constructions. This gives the students a knowledge base for an open choice of specialization later in the program. The remaining 90 ECTS are made up of 25 ECTS of compulsory basic (core) courses (K), 35 ECTS of elective concentration courses (S) and a final master thesis of ECTS (M). The elective concentration courses must be approved by the department, but the students will have considerable freedom in choosing their own combinations depending on field of interest and knowledge. The master thesis may be taken either at the faculty or in cooperation with industry. The department has good contacts with offshore companies in the region. In order to be assigned a topic for a master paper, satisfactory progression must be demonstrated as cited in Regulations for Master's thesis. The program provides opportunities for concentration / specialization within the following areas: CIVIL ENGINEERING - gives competence in the design and calculation of residential and industrial buildings, sports arenas, bridges, quays and other constructions. ENERGY TECHNOLOGY - gives competence within transformation, distribution and use of energy as well as a survey of energy systems and renewable sources of energy. It is a special page 1
M-KONMAT - Mechanical and Structural Engineering and Materials - Master's Deg... focus on conversion and distribution of natural gas. MECHANICAL ENGINEERING - gives competence in design and analysis of mechanical components, systems and equipment. OFFSHORE STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING focuses on analysis of offshore structures, based on environmental and other loads, load bearing systems, and strength of materials. Analysis of structural behaviour within theory of elasticity and plasticity, including the use of finite element method, is emphasized. Fatigue, fracture and general structural integrity are important subjects. The course work consists of lectures, project assignments, obligatory and voluntary exercises and laboratory work. The course descriptions provide further information on Class work and instruction Set texts Evaluation Exams UiS wishes to offer all its programs as planned, but courses still have to be subject to availability of resources and a minimum student enrollment. Also the content and scope of the courses will necessarily have to change over time because of professional development, use of new technology and general social change. Learning outcome Candidates with a master s degree in Mechanical and Structural engineering will have knowledge within design and calculation of constructions and technical systems. CIVIL ENGINEERING The candidates will have knowledge within design and calculation of houses and industrial buildings, sport arenas, bridges, quay and other constructions. ENERGY TECHNOLOGY The candidates will have knowledge within conversion, distribution and use of energy MECHANICAL ENGINEERING The candidates will have knowledge in constructions materials, and within dimension and analysis of mechanical components, systems and equipments OFFSHORE STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING The candidates will have fundamental knowledge within functional demands, environmental loads and characteristics of materials on offshore structures. page 2
Admission Requirements A bachelor's degree in engineering within a relevant subject area (civil engineering, mechanical, materials, marine, process or equivalent with a solid foundation in structural engineering, materials technology and/or fluids power subjects) with ECTS of mathematics and statistics (normally mathematics 1, 2 and 3, and probability calculation with statistics). Admission information If there are fewer applicants than can be accommodated, those applicants that do not fulfill the requirements for admission can be given conditional admission when they lack up to 10 ECTS. Missing ECTS must be taken within one year of the beginning of the program. Application must be sent to the UiS on a local application form. If a student wants to be admitted on a basis of individual competence, s/he must contact the admission office. After admission to the program the students may apply to the faculty for permission to take it as part-time study. The competence acquired by the students in the different specializations is as relevant for land based activities as for offshore. Land based activities may be in building and construction, metallurgic industry, process industry, the energy sector and a variety of mechanical industries. Also the public sector has a demand for this kind of competence. The program qualifies for jobs in standing industries like building, roads, materials, machines, production processes and energy, and the students will also be competitive in an international job market. A completed master's degree may give admission to the PhD program in offshore technology at the UiS. Course assessment Form and/or discussion according to faculty guidelines. Study Abroad Modules in internationalization within the four semester master program can most conveniently be offered in connection with the more general subjects in the second semester (spring), but this depends on the agreements that have been made.
