With this in mind, we have developed a wide variety of work-related programs providing real-world experience in your chosen field. All work experience programs are comprised of a study component at International House Vancouver and a work component utilizing the counseling and placement assistance of Internex Exchange. Internex is the Canadian leader in internship placements having successfully placed more international students in their chosen fields than any other agency of its kind. The preparatory classes available at IH Vancouver are suitable for all levels of English and all types of placements. IH Vancouver will provide you with an experience that will last a lifetime. professional internships & careerconnect IH Vancouver internships provide supervised, practical training experience for students and professionals. Conducted on-site within a host company, candidates are able to gain specialized, practical business experience in their respective areas of interest, educational background and previous work experience. All placements require the completion of the IH Vancouver CareerConnect program and are unpaid. CareerConnect is a course specially designed for IH professional internship students to prepare candidates for their internships. The placement process is conducted while candidates are participating in the CareerConnect classes at IH. 4 5 work & study for Customer Service or Retail Sales This program is designed for students to put their knowledge gained in the IH Vancouver Program to the test in a Canadian business environment. Although placements are paid, the options available to candidates are quite different from those available to candidates in the Professional Program. The majority of positions available are in customer service or retail sales. This program may be taken as a Straight, Integrated or Sandwich structure. Integrated options may only consist of 7+21, 9+27 or 11+33. Rockies Option: Students wishing to participate in this program in the Rocky Mountains can choose from either a Straight course or a Sandwich course. Students enrolled in the Rockies option must complete their entire study portion at the IH Vancouver campus. Work placements may be conducted at Banff, Lake Louise, Jasper, Invermere or Kananaskis. The goal is to improve both job and language-related skills as well as to gain work experience. In each of the 3 programs, at least 50% of the program will consist of course work with the remaining time spent working at a Canadian resort. Work placements may be conducted at Whistler or one of the many resorts in the Rocky Mountains. Whistler Option: Students wishing to participate in the Whistler option must complete their entire study period in Whistler. All students enroled in the Whistler Integrated options must study parttime at the Whistler campus throughout their course of employment. Neither the Sandwich nor the Straight program are offered in Whistler. All Whistler placements require a minimum level of Lower- prior to beginning classes. Integrated courses WORK & concurrent with Part-time study WORK & 27 wks WORK & DATE June 15, 2009, November 30, 2009, June 14, 2010, November 29, 2010 Cambridge Certificate in Work Experience Through our partner INTERNeX, students at IH Vancouver have the opportunity to receive work experience certification from the University of Cambridge. INTERNeX is an accredited Work Experience Placement Organizer by University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) which is part of Cambridge Assessment. This program is offered in two levels: Standard and Advanced; the minimum length of placement for a Standard Level Certificate is 105 hours (3 weeks full-time) and for an Advanced Level Certificate it is 210 hours. (6 weeks full-time) This certificate can also be included in a few other programs offered by INTERNeX such as programs, programs and Work Experience programs Successful participants receive the University of Cambridge International Examinations Certificate in Work Experience. This internationally recognized certification carries a brand recognised by employers around the world. Participants undertake placements which are carefully organized based on their background, qualifications, interests, career aims and level of English. At the end of the program they can complete the work experience Assessment Booklet and enter for a certificate that will accredit their work skills and help them in their future careers.
6 7 work & travel Work and travel programs are designed for participants to gain exposure to daily Canadian life by living and working in Canada. There is no English pre-requisite for admission to the program. Upon completion of 4~24 weeks of IH Vancouver or IH Whistler s General or programs students are placed in paid positions. Students can work in the tourism / hospitality sector, or other job sectors depending on their previous work experience. All participants must have an eligible visa to be accepted to the program. ranchstay Like the Farmstay program students will study at IH Vancouver or Whistler for 4~24 weeks, then move to a ranch away from all the bright lights of the city. Participants will stay with a family who run their own farm or ranch and will include them in their personal activities as well as local events and show participants how to get around in rural daily life. Students pay a weekly fee to stay on the ranch and do not work other than simple household chores. For people looking to learn something about the community they are placed in and farming in general, this is an excellent opportunity. and Tourism Work in top hotels and resorts in world famous locations including Vancouver Island, Whistler, the Rocky Mountains and Vancouver. Construction Join the one of Canada s fastest growing and most lucrative industries working in metropolitan Vancouver or rural British Columbia. Candidates must have prior training and/or experience prior to being placed in this area. visa - Visitor visa - Working Holiday, SWAP or Young Workers Exchange Sales, Retail and Customer Services Customer service and sales positions in a people driven business environment in major city centres across Canada. Prove your skills in a shop environment in one of Canada s metropolitain centres; Vancouver or Toronto. executive experience cafe experience If you only have four weeks or less and want a crash course in the service industry then this is your option. You can get experience in the real-world of cafe culture in North America and meet a lot of people in the process. Participants study for one or two weeks and then gain real-world experience in a fun downtown Vancouver cafe environment. The main objective of this program is to improve language skills and have a great time in the process! visa - Working Holiday, SWAP or Young Worker s Exchange If you are a professional with several years of experience and are interested in learning first-hand how Canadian business works, then our Executive Program is an excellent option. This program is designed to give professionals intimate exposure to their industry in Canada as well as a touch of the social life. If you only have a very short time (1-3 weeks), then our variety of training programs are a great option. You have the chance to meet professionals from your sector in business in Canada and to discuss with them how business differs. You also get the chance to attend business networking meetings and conduct company tours.
